Friday Prayer Khutbah - The Essence of Taqwa

Opening Praise and Testimony

إِنَّ الْحَمْدَ لِلَّهِ نَحْمَدُهُ وَنَسْتَعِينُهُ وَنَسْتَغْفِرُهُ وَنَسْتَهْدِيهِ وَنَتُوبُ إِلَيْهِ وَنَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنْ شُرُورِ أَنْفُسِنَا وَمِنْ سَيِّئَاتِ أَعْمَالِنَا . مَنْ يَهْدِهِ اللَّهُ فَلَا مُضِلَّ لَهُ، وَمَنْ يُضْلِلْ فَلَا هَادِيَ لَهُ. وَأَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ. وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ

"O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims."

"O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul and created from it its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women. And fear Allah, through whom you ask one another, and the wombs. Indeed Allah is ever, over you, an Observer."

"O you who have believed, fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice. He will correct for you your deeds and forgive you your sins. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly attained a great attainment."

Introduction: The Best Guidance

أَمَّا بَعْدُ، فَإِنَّ أَصْدَقَ الْحَدِيثِ كِتَابُ اللَّهِ وَخَيْرَ الْهَدْيِ هَدْيُ مُحَمَّدٍ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ. وَشَرَّ الْأُمُورِ مُحْدَثَاتُهَا وَكُلَّ مُحْدَثَةٍ بِدْعَةٌ وَكُلَّ بِدْعَةٍ ضَلَالَةٌ وَكُلَّ ضَلَالَةٍ فِي النَّارِ

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَنزَلَ عَلَى عَبْدِهِ الْكِتَابَ وَلَمْ يَجْعَل لَّهُ عِوَجًا. الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ حَمْدًا كَثِيرًا

The Purpose of Ramadan: Attaining Taqwa

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ قَبْلَ قَلِيلٍ لَقَدْ صُمْنَا شَهْرَ رَمَضَانَ. لَكِنْ مَنْ خَرَجَ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ وَقَدِ اسْتَفَادَ تَقْوَى اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ؟

"O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous."

The Centrality of Taqwa in Islamic Life

"Alif, Lam, Meem. This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah."

فَمِفْتَاحُ هِدَايَةِ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى وَهِدَايَةِ الْقُرْآنِ تَقْوَى اللَّهِ: ذَلِكَ الْكِتَابُ لَا رَيْبَ فِيهِ هُدًى لِّلْمُتَّقِينَ

"Allah only accepts from the righteous."

فَسِرُّ قَبُولِ الْعَمَلِ تَقْوَى اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ: إِنَّمَا يَتَقَبَّلُ اللَّهُ مِنَ الْمُتَّقِينَ

Allah's Testament to All Nations

"And We have instructed those who were given the Scripture before you and [also] you to fear Allah."

"O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous."

The Detailed Meaning of Taqwa

فَمَا هُوَ تَقْوَى أَيُّهَا الْإِخْوَةُ الْكِرَامُ اللَّهُ سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى قَدْ فَصَّلَ هَذَا ، إِجَابَةَ هَذَا السُّؤَالِ قَرِيبٌ مِنْ هَذِهِ الْآيَاتِ فِي رَمَضَانَ

فَقَالَ سُبْحَانَهُ هَذِهِ الْآيَاتِ: يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ الصِّيَامُ

: وَقَبْلَ ذَلِكَ، فَصَفْحَةٌ قَبْلَ ذَلِكَ ، لَقَدْ قَالَ سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى فِي بَيَانِ تَقْوَى اللَّهِ وَتَفْصِيلِ تَقْوَى اللَّهِ

"Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but [true] righteousness is [in] one who believes in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets and gives wealth, in spite of love for it, to relatives."

(22:177 Quran) الْقُرْبَى وَالْيَتَامَى وَالْمَسَاكِينَ وَابْنَ السَّبِيلِ وَالسَّائِلِينَ وَفِي الرِّقَابِ

هَذَا هُوَ تَقْوَى وَآتَى الْمَالَ عَلَى حُبِّهِ. ذَوِي الْقُرْبَى وَالْيَتَامَى وَالْمَسَاكِينَ وَابْنَ السَّبِيلِ وَالسَّائِلِينَ وَفِي الرِّقَابِ. هَذَا هُوَ الْبِرُّ، هُوَ الْبِرُّ، وَهَذَا هُوَ التَّقْوَى

The Command to Spend from What We Love

"Never will you attain the good [reward] until you spend [in the way of Allah] from that which you love."

لَن تَنَالُوا الْبِرَّ حَتَّىٰ تُنفِقُوا مِمَّا تُحِبُّونَ

فَالنَّصَارَى يُنْفِقُونَ مِمَّا يُحِبُّونَ يُنْفِقُونَ أَمْوَالَهُمْ عَلَى أَمْثَالِ هَذِهِ الْحَمَلَاتِ التَّبْشِيرِيَّةِ الَّتِي تَرَكَتْ آثَارَهَا فِي بُلْدَانِنَا الْإِسْلَامِيَّةِ وَالْعَرَبِيَّةِ النَّصَارَى يُنْفِقُونَ أَمْوَالَهُمْ لَيْلًا وَنَهَارًا. وَالْيَهُودُ يُنْفِقُونَ أَمْوَالَهُمْ لِإِسْرَائِيلَ

أَمَّا الْمُسْلِمُونَ، هَلْ نُنْفِقُ عَلَى مَا يُفِيدُنَا وَيُفِيدُ أَجْيَالِنَا الْمُسْتَقْبِلِيَّةَ؟ هَلْ نُنْفِقُ عَلَى أَمْثَالِ هَذَا الْمَشْرُوعِ الْعَظِيمِ، هَذَا الْمَرْكَزِ الْعَظِيمِ جَنْبِ هَذَا الْمَسْجِدِ؟ أُسِّسَ لِإِنْقَاذِ الشَّبَابِ فِي هَذَا الْبَلَدِ. مَاذَا أَنْفَقْنَا عَلَى هَذَا الْمَشْرُوعِ وَأَمْثَالِهَا مِنَ الْمَشَارِيعِ الْإِسْلَامِيَّةِ هُنَا فِي هَذَا الْبَلَدِ وَخَارِجِ هَذَا الْبَلَدِ؟ أَنْتُمْ تَعْرِفُونَ الْإِجَابَةَ

The True Nature of Righteousness

Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala said: You will not attain righteousness until you spend from what you love. And in this verse, it is not righteousness to turn your faces towards the East and the West. But righteousness is one who believes in Allah and the Last Day and the angels and the Book and the Prophets.

وَآتَى الْمَالَ عَلَى حُبِّهِ، عَلَى حُبِّهِ. نُحِبُّ الْمَالَ، نُحِبُّ الْمَالَ

"Beautified for people is the love of that which they desire - of women and sons, hoarded quantities of gold and silver, branded horses, and cattle and tilled land. That is the enjoyment of worldly life, but Allah has with Him the best return."

وَاللَّهُ عِندَهُ حُسْنُ الْمَآبِ

فَهَذَا الْمَالُ هُوَ مَحْبُوبٌ، هُوَ مَحْبُوبٌ إِلَيْنَا . مَعَ ذَلِكَ، الْأَبْرَارُ يُنْفِقُونَهَا عَلَى حُبِّهِ: ذَوِي الْقُرْبَى وَالْيَتَامَى وَالْمَسَاكِينَ وَابْنَ السَّبِيلِ وَالسَّائِلِينَ وَفِي الرِّقَابِ

The Complete Characteristics of the Righteous

"And those who establish prayer and give zakah and those who fulfill their promise when they promise."

"Among the believers are men true to what they promised Allah. Among them is he who has fulfilled his vow [to Allah], and among them is he who is waiting, and they have not changed [their promise] at all."

"And those who fulfill their promise when they promise, and the patient in poverty and hardship and at the time of [military] engagement. Those are the ones who have been true."

Self-Examination and Honesty

مَنْ مِنَّا، أَيُّهَا الْإِخْوَةُ، صَدَقَ مَا عَاهَدَ اللَّهَ عَلَيْهِ؟ مَنْ مِنَّا وَجَدَ نَفْسَهُ مَوْصُوفًا بِهَذِهِ الْأَوْصَافِ الْجَمِيلَةِ؟ مَنْ مِنَّا أَدْرَكَ هَذِهِ الْمَقَامَاتِ الْمَحْمُودَةَ؟ مَنْ مِنَّا

ظَفِرَ الِامْتِحَانَ؟

"Alif, Lam, Meem. Do the people think that they will be left to say, "We believe" and they will not be tried? But We have certainly tried those before them, and Allah will surely make evident those who are truthful."

هَذَا هُوَ الِامْتِحَانُ. فَلَيَعْلَمَنَّ اللَّهُ الَّذِينَ صَدَقُوا وَلَيَعْلَمَنَّ الْكَاذِبِينَ

The Truthful Ones Are the People of Taqwa

"Those are the ones who have been true, and it is those who are the righteous."

وَكَأَنَّهُ قَالَ سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى: وَأُولَئِكَ هُمُ الَّذِينَ اسْتَفَادُوا مِنْ رَمَضَانَ

"O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous."

أُولَئِكَ الَّذِينَ صَدَقُوا وَأُولَئِكَ هُمُ الْمُتَّقُونَ

Closing Supplication - First Khutbah

فَنَسْأَلُ اللَّهَ سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى لَنَا وَلَكُمْ جَمِيعًا الصِّدْقَ وَنَسْأَلُ اللهَ سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى التَّقْوَى الْبِرَّ وَالتَّقْوَى وَنَسْأَلُ اللَّهَ سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى أَنْ يَجْعَلَنَا مِنَ الَّذِينَ يُنْفِقُونَ أَمْوَالَهُمْ بِاللَّيْلِ وَالنَّهَارِ. وَنَسْأَلُ اللَّهَ سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى أَنْ يُوَفِّقَنَا جَمِيعًا إِلَى مَا يُحِبُّهُ وَيَرْضَاهُ إِنَّهُ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ وَإِنَّهُ لِلْحَمْدِ جَدِيرٌ

وَصَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَى سَيِّدِنَا مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِهِ وَصَحْبِهِ وَسَلَّمَ تَسْلِيمًا كَثِيرًا

أَقُولُ قَوْلِي هَذَا وَأَسْتَغْفِرُ اللهَ لِي وَلَكُمْ وَلِسَائِرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ. يَا قَوْمِ اسْتَغْفِرُوا اللَّهَ

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ وَالصَّلَاةُ وَالسَّلَامُ عَلَى سَيِّدِ الْمُرْسَلِينَ وَعَلَى آلِهِ وَصَحْبِهِ وَسَلَّمَ تَسْلِيمًا كَثِيرًا
