Introduction

My dear brothers and sisters in Islam, it gives me great pleasure today to stand before you and address you about the importance of the sunnah in our lives. Now, initially I was thinking that you know, the best thing to do is to compile the traditional ayat and ahadith about the importance of the seerah, the importance of the sunnah of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم. But to be honest, I believe that for the most part we know these ayat and ahadith. And so I wanted to actually get to something which is a little bit more practical, a little bit more tangible in our daily lives.

And that is that one of the greatest challenges that we are facing in our times is the onslaught that we currently face against our scripture, against our shariah, against our Quran and sunnah vis-a-vis Western culture, you know, the intellect, common sense, human rights. In other words, there seems to be a contradiction. There seems to be a dichotomy between on the one hand, quote-unquote human values or freedom or progression.

And on the other hand, the shariah and the sunnah of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم. And there really and truly is a clash of, I don't wanna call it civilizations, but definitely a clash of morals, a clash of cultures, a clash of what's right and wrong. And so instead of just giving you vague and abstract ayat and ahadith about the importance of the sunnah, we all know that. I wanted to go into a little bit of a tangent about what is the meaning and why has Allah given us an intellect.

The Central Question: Purpose of Intellect in Religion

What is the purpose of intellect in our religion? Because one of the main things that occurs, you read a hadith or you read a verse of the Quran, you read the sunnah, and you say, you know, that doesn't make

sense to me. How can this be my religion? And there seems to be a clash, there seems to be a rejection. So we have one of two options.

The first of these options, we think we have one of two options. The first of these options is we say, this is the sunnah and it's gotta be correct, and my mind must be totally incorrect, and let me just leave it at that. Let me ask no questions.

And we become like the Christians who when they're said, when they ask questions, their priest tell them, don't ask, just believe. Okay, and the other extreme is, if there seems to be a contradiction, we say, I know Allah has given me an intellect. It cannot go against the sunnah.

And so I have to give precedence to what I think is true, what really and truly my common sense tells me. This is the other extreme, okay. Now, these are theoretical and abstract realities.

You can apply them in your daily lives to a million and one scenarios and situations. Anytime there appears to be a clash, anytime there appears to be a confusion, a dichotomy, it's either the sunnah or my common sense, then this topic applies to you. And the purpose of this topic, insha'Allah ta'ala, is to provide us the intellectual and theological background to help us understand, why has Allah sent down the shari'ah, and why has He given us an aql.

In Arabic, the word for intellect is aql. Okay, and I'm gonna be using this word a lot. So why has Allah given us an intellect and sent down a shari'ah? So that they clash one another or what?

Framework for Discussion

Now, I'm gonna talk about a number of issues. First and foremost, why are we talking about this topic? Secondly, what does the Quran tell us about intellect and reason, common sense? Thirdly, what are the dangers of going to extremes in this issue? And then I'll conclude with a comprehensive conclusion, and insha'Allah try to tie in some aspects of leadership with that.

Why This Topic is Important

So firstly, why are we talking about this topic? I think I've already alluded to the fact that in my humble opinion, the primary battle that we as Muslims are facing now is an identity crisis. What does it mean to be a Muslim? And that identity crisis centers around a clash of, as I put it, morals, a clash of values, a clash of intellects.

It's either the shari'ah or human rights and common sense and progressiveness. That's the way we look at it. And I think that this is really and truly the crisis of modern times, especially for the western ummah more so than any other ummah.

Also we're entering a scientific era. In fact, we're not just entering it, we're kind of reaching the apex of it. And there's an ever increasing emphasis on the role of science, on the role of technology, on the role of

the intellect.

And traditional values are being challenged, re-examines. People are asking for a fresh look at Islam. The key buzzword in all Muslim circles without exception is ijtihad.

That's the key buzzword, ijtihad. Everybody's calling for ijtihad. We wanna re-evaluate things that were never asked to be re-evaluated before.

And so it is of paramount importance that we as leaders of the future of the ummah try to reach a harmony, try to reach an understanding. What is the role of the sunnah and what is the role of my intelligence, my aql that Allah has given me?

Allah's Emphasis on Intellect in the Quran

Now, Allah has mentioned the word aql in the Quran more than 60 times, aql and its derivatives. There are many derivatives and synonyms of aql. Of them is fiqh. Fiqh, many people think fiqh means legal theory. In fact, fiqh means understanding.

And this is really a key term in our religion. Why has Allah called legal sciences fiqh? Because this is the key to understanding. Likewise, fakkara, yufakkiru, dhakkara.

All of this aql, all of this means to think, to contemplate. We've all heard, and I guarantee you at least a dozen times we've heard, the Quran challenges us to think. The Quran wants us to ponder, to reflect.

We've heard this dozens or hundreds of times. However, I dare state in rather a blunt way, I don't think that the people who say this have actually gone through the Quran and looked at the context of these verses. Looked at when does Allah ask us to think and who is He addressing when He asks us to think and ponder.

And alhamdulillah, I have gone through the Quran with this goal in mind. And I've categorized the verses. Generally, I'm sure that others can do other categories, but I've categorized the verses into a number of different categories.

Apparent Contradiction: Think vs. Believe

When does Allah ask us to think and ponder? Because you see there are other verses that ask us to not think but submit. In fact, the very verse that the brother just recited:

ذُلِكَ الْكِتَابُ لَا رَيْبَ فِيهِ هُدًى لِّلْمُتَّقِينَ الَّذِينَ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِالْغَيْبِ

Dhalika al-kitabu la rayba feehi hudan lil-muttaqeena alladheena yu'minoona bil-ghayb "This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah - Who believe in the unseen."

The fundamental characteristic of the believer. In the second verse in the Quran, he believes in the unseen. Belief. And so in certain verses, blind faith is praised, belief in the unseen. And in other verses,

Allah is challenging us to think and ponder and reflect.

Is there a contradiction or not? This is what we have to answer right now.

Four Categories of Divine Commands to Think

Now, the first category of verses in which Allah asks a certain group of people to think, is related to the fact He wants us to ponder over the fact that there is one creator and only one creator. So He's challenging mankind to think about a very specific issue.

Category 1: Establishing Tawheed (Monotheism)

He's challenging atheists and agnostics. He's challenging those who worship a plurality of gods to think, how many gods are there? Challenge your minds, use the brains that Allah has given you, and come to the conclusion that la ilaha illallah, there is only one God, and only He is worthy of worship. Of these verses, surah al-Rum verse 8, Allah says:

أَوَلَمْ يَتَفَكَّرُوا فِي أَنفُسِهِمْ مَا خَلَقَ اللَّهُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا إِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ وَأَجَلٍ مُّسَمًّى

Awa lam yatafakkaroo fee anfusihim ma khalaqallahu as-samawaati wal-arda wa ma baynahuma illa bil-haqqi wa ajalin musamman "Don't they think amongst themselves? Allah did not create all that is around us, except for truth. And all of it will come to an end on the day of judgment."

Don't they think that Allah created us? That He will resurrect us again? So the challenge here, and in many other verses, we're not gonna obviously list all 80 verses in this talk.

But many other verses challenging a select group of people, those who reject tawheed, to come to the conclusion through their intellect, that Allah is One, and only He is worthy of worship. Likewise, in Surah Al-Anbiya verse 67, the Prophet Ibrahim عليه السلام challenges his people. Challenges his people. His people were idol worshippers. And the Prophet Ibrahim challenges them:

أُفٍّ لَّكُمْ وَلِمَا تَعْبُدُونَ مِن دُونِ اللَّهِ ۖ أَفَلَا تَعْقِلُونَ

Uffin lakum wa lima ta'budoona min doonillahi afala ta'qiloon "Woe to you! You are fools for worshipping these idols. Don't you think?"

Don't you think you are prostrating to something made of rocks and stone? Something you have carved out with your own hands? You go to the house of an idol worshipper, you find one corner of that house is a sacred location, where there is an idol, where every morning, every evening, every afternoon, they bow them down to, and they present offerings to, and they give candles to.

Ibrahim عليه السلام is telling his people, Are you fools? Don't you think and ponder that you are going to be subservient to an object that cannot think or speak or act? And so the challenge here is to use our minds to come to the conclusion that Allah is our Creator, and He's created us for a purpose. This is the first series of verses, and under this come many verses.

Category 2: Recognizing Prophethood

The second reason, and the second premise, the second set of verses, in which we find Allah challenging mankind to think, is that He is asking mankind to come to the conclusion, the logical, the intellectual conclusion, that this man, the Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم is a Prophet of God.

It is not blind faith for the one who does not believe. There must be a logical, intellectual challenge. Let me see, let me think, is this man a Prophet of God or not? And you think, you who does not believe or non-Muslim, you think and you ponder, you reflect and you contemplate, is this man a Prophet of God or not? And under this concept come many verses in the Quran, again we'll only quote one or two, of them Surah Al-A'raf verse 184:

أَوَلَمْ يَتَفَكَّرُوا مَا بِصَاحِبِهِم مِّن جِنَّةٍ

Awa lam yatafakkaroo ma bi-sahibihim min jinnah "Don't they think? Their companion i.e. the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم is not a mad man."

Why do you think he's doing what he's doing? Why do you think he has sacrificed everything, put everything on the line for what? Either he's crazy or he has a valid message. And so they're asked to think and to contemplate.

To come to the logical and intellectual conclusion that this man is indeed a Prophet of God. And in fact in one of the most powerful verses in the Quran concerning thinking, Allah says in Surah As-Sabah verse 46:

قُلْ إِنَّمَا أَعِظُكُم بِوَاحِدَةٍ ۖ أَن تَقُومُوا لِلَّهِ مَثْنَىٰ وَفُرَادَىٰ ثُمَّ تَتَفَكَّرُوا ۚ مَا بِصَاحِبِكُم مِّن جِنَّةٍ ۚ

Qul innama a'idhukum bi-wahidatin an taqoomoo lillahi mathna wa furada thumma tatafakkaroo ma bi-sahibikum min jinnah "Tell them, O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم I'm only asking you to do one thing. That you stand up for the sake of God. You stand up for the sake of Allah. And then you think. What are you expected to think about? Once again, the same phrase as in the previous verse. This companion of yours is not a fool or a madman. He is a real Prophet of God."

And by the way, whenever there's a command to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم to spread the message, this command now applies to us. It applies to us now. We are the ones, the heirs and the inheritors of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم. We have to stand up and take on that message. So therefore, when we stand up in front of those who do not believe in our religion, we should say exactly what Allah is telling us to say.

So the challenge is there to those who reject the message of Islam. Those who reject the sunnah, Allah tells them clearly, stand up for the sake of God. Stand up for the sake of Allah and then think.

But think about what? What is the purpose? What do you think about? You think about this man and his message. You think about his seerah and his biography. You think about his life and his trials and tribulations.

You think about his miracles. And you come to the logical, the intellectual conclusion that this man is indeed a Prophet of God. And Ibn Hazm, one of the famous scholars, in fact, probably the most famous scholar of Spain, of Muslim Andalus.

Ibn Hazm has a beautiful statement. I loved it when I read this statement. He said, if the Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم had but one miracle, that of his life, his seerah, it would be sufficient for mankind to know he's a Prophet of God.

No other miracle was needed except for his own lifestyle. His seerah is one of the greatest miracles that Allah has given us. So this is what Allah is telling us in this verse.

Stand up and think about this man's message, this man's life, his biography, and you will come to the logical, and intellectual, and rational conclusion that this man is indeed a Prophet of God. And other verses as well, I direct you to Surah Yunus, verse 16. And other verses, again as I said, there are dozens of verses under each one of these categories.

Category 3: Muslims Studying Creation

The third category of verses that command a certain group of people to think, this command to think occurs for Muslims. What does Allah tell us to think about? He says, as in one example, Surah Ali'Imran, verse 191. Allah describes the believers, that they pray, and they fast, and they believe, and they do this and that, of the characteristics:

الَّذِينَ يَذْكُرُونَ اللَّهَ قِيَامًا وَقُعُودًا وَعَلَىٰ جُنُوبِهِمْ وَيَتَفَكَّرُونَ فِي خَلْقِ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ رَبَّنَا مَا خَلَقْتَ هَٰذَا بَاطِلًا سُبْحَانَكَ فَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

"They are those who think, who remember Allah, who do dhikr, when they are standing and sitting, and lying down. 24x7 they remember Allah. And they think. They think about the creation of the heavens and earth. Science, nature, the disciplines that we study in university. They think and you ponder, you research and you contemplate. Our Lord, you have not done all of this in vain. Therefore save me from the fire of hell, cause me to enter jannah."

This is a part of our iman, which unfortunately many of us do not really understand and think about. It is a part of our iman to study what we call the secular sciences, biology, chemistry, physics, astronomy. It is a part of our iman, Allah tells us.

They think about the creation of the heavens and earth. But what happens when you think about this? What is the purpose of this thinking? Allah, you have not done all of this in vain. The beauty, the perfection of biology, of chemistry, of organic chemistry, of the human immunology, every single facet of secular knowledge that we study.

Wallahi our iman should soar to the skies. The perfection of Allah's creation is astounding to the mind. Any single topic that we study, the harmony of everything around us, the interlocking of every single bit, minuscule particle of nature around us.

This perfection of Allah's creation, it increases our iman. Our iman soars up and so we submit to Allah. We increase our khushu and taqwa and we pray to Allah, Oh Allah, you have not done all of this in vain.

Therefore save me from the fire of hell, cause me to enter jannah. Intellect increases our iman. Aql tells us that there is a perfect all-powerful God and only He is worthy of worship.

This is the purpose of intellect. For the Muslim, one of their purposes, is his iman goes up. How many of us when we study our sciences, are conscious of this one facet.

That when we read these books, now the people who have written these books, they've tried to take God out of everything. And so they say nature has decreed, or they put it in the neutral, you will find this or it has been found in this way. As for us, we just substitute, make it into the first or the third person.

Allah has decreed, Allah has willed, Allah has created. Every such phrase we come across, we should just mentally substitute. And that will automatically increase our iman, automatically make us humble in front of Allah.

And so our aql will be used to increase our belief in Allah. This is a fundamental purpose of our intellect. And that is why Allah has given it to us.

That is why Allah has given us a aql, to increase our belief and iman and taqwa in Allah. And again there are many verses under this category as well.

Category 4: Understanding the Quran and Sunnah

The fourth category, and the last of the categories. And again as I said, this is my humble interpretation and categorization. And I'm sure that another person who goes through the entire Quran and compiles all of these verses will be able to find a different way of devising them. And this is what Allah has led me to.

If it is correct, then it is from Allah. If it is incorrect, then it is from myself and from shaytan. The last category of those whom Allah asks to think and challenge and ponder, is so that we as Muslims can understand Allah's religion.

Understand and not challenge. Understand the Quran and sunnah. Understand the life of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم. As Allah says in Surah Yusuf verse 2:

إِنَّا أَنزَلْنَاهُ قُرْآنًا عَرَبِيًّا لَّعَلَّكُمْ تَعْقِلُونَ

"We have revealed this Quran in Arabic to you. Why? So that you can think and ponder."

Likewise Allah says in many verses:

وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا الْقُرْآنَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ

"We have made the Quran easy to ponder and contemplate. But who is there that is thinking about it? Who is there that is taking admonition and guidance from it?"

Many verses once again, where Allah asks the believers what? What does He ask us? To read the Quran and understand it.

Unfortunately Muslims, this is very sad. We are pretty much the only civilization on earth that teaches its kids how to read a script without understanding a single word of what we're reading. Have you ever heard of a Frenchman teaching his kid how to read French without understanding? A German, Spanish, Italian, any language.

Even when the Roman Catholics teach Latin to those who are studying their scriptures, they teach the understanding of Latin as well. Not just how to read it properly. We are the only major civilization on the planet that has devised a system of how to teach our children to read the Quran without understanding a single letter of what they read.

And Allah has told us, we have made the Quran in simple Arabic so that you can think and ponder over this. So the reason of aql is to think and ponder over the Quran. Now, these are the four primary categories that I have come across.

The Meaning of Aql (Intellect)

What exactly does aql mean? What exactly does the root aql mean? Which is the primary word for intellect in the Quran. Aql comes from the root aqala. And aqala is the same word that is used for the harness of a horse, iqal.

It is used for the reins that you use to guide a camel or a horse. And aqala actually means, the verb aqala means to hold back and stop. To hold back and stop.

Now, what is the relationship of intellect with the rein of a camel or a horse? This is the essence of what an intellect does. It holds you back from that which will cause you harm and guides you to your destination and journey. Just like the harness, just like what holds back the horse.

Aql prevents a person from destruction in this world and the hereafter. Look at the beauty of the Arabic language. Wallahi, there is no language that is as eloquent as the Arabic language.

And one of the best ways we can appreciate and realize that is to go to the roots of the words in the Arabic language. The same word for intellect, actually it has nothing to do with the dimaag and the intellect. It has to do with holding back and restraining.

And so the aql prevents one from falling into disaster, falling into shame, falling into problems in this world and the hereafter. And that is why Allah has described those who reject the sunnah. And when I say the sunnah, I mean the prophetic way overall.

Those who reject the message of the sunnah, he has described them as being without aql. In some verses he describes them as fools. He describes sinners as fools.

Because the two in Islam have the same connotation and concept. Only a fool would disobey Allah. That's the point here.

And only an intelligent person obeys Allah. Only a fool would disobey Allah and reject the message of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم. Allah says in surah al-Ankabut verse 63:

قُلِ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ بَلْ أَكْثَرُهُمْ لَا يَعْقِلُونَ

"Say all praises due to Allah. Most of those who reject the message, they don't think, they're fools."

They're foolish people for not pondering and thinking about the message of Islam. In surah al-Mulk verse 10, Allah tells us that the people of the fire of hell are gonna say:

وَقَالُوا لَوْ كُنَّا نَسْمَعُ أَوْ نَعْقِلُ مَا كُنَّا فِي أَصْحَابِ السَّعِيرِ

"They would say if we only heard and thought, we would not be of the denizens of the fire of hell."

Subhanallah, being wise saves you from the fire of hell. Using your aql leads you to accepting the sunnah of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم.

Potential Contradictions Between Aql and Sunnah

Now, before we conclude and open up the floor for questions, what are some of the dangers of giving precedence to what we perceive to be aql over the sunnah of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم?

Well, first and foremost, can such an instance occur? Can there be a direct and explicit contradiction between aql on the one hand, or call it nature, call it science, call it technology. Can there be a contradiction between science and common sense on the one hand, and our shari'ah and the sunnah of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم on the other? We as Muslims, as orthodox Muslims, there are other groups out there who believe otherwise.

But as orthodox Muslims, we believe firmly that it is not possible for there to be a direct clash, a direct conflict between common sense and science, and what? The sunnah and the shari'ah of Islam. There can be no contradiction between a scientific reality, between common sense and logic, and Islam, there cannot be. Why? Simple.

Both come from Allah. And to claim a contradiction implies that Allaha'udhu billah did something wrong. He gave us an aql, He sent down a shari'ah, we say there's a clash, who's the one who made a mistake? A'udhu billah, the claim therefore is that the mistake comes from the one who either sent the shari'ah or created the aql.

And so we as Muslims believe that such a case can never occur. Never can a scientific fact contradict a verse of the Quran. Darwin's theory for example can never be proven, it will always remain a theory.

It is a theory, it has its evidences, it will never be a fact, never. Because the Quran tells us something else. I'm not even gonna say, if they prove it, they will never be able to prove it.

Never. Give us a solid proof. They have proven the earth is round, this is a scientific proof, nobody can deny it.

They have proven that the earth orbits the sun, this is a scientific proof, nobody can deny it. We don't find verses that go against it. In the past, some people might have interpreted some verses to mean the earth is flat or this or that, this is an interpretation.

You look at the Quran and you find there is no contradiction between anything that has scientifically been proven, or logically or rationally proven, and the Quran. And this will never occur. Never.

This is a fundamental belief that we should have, as Muslims.

When We Perceive Contradictions

However, suppose we do find in our own daily lives this contradiction. We do find something that we think, well, that doesn't make sense, how can that be true? In this case, we have to understand that our aql, our intellect, does not have a precise limit or criterion of what is right and wrong.

Our intellect is a faculty that Allah has given us, just like hearing and seeing and smelling and taste, other faculties. And a faculty is not divine. It can be mistaken.

If I put a pen in water, you all know you're gonna see the pen crooked, you're seeing it. You're seeing it crooked, you know that it's not crooked. You see a mirage in the desert, you see that water, you know it's not true.

You hear somebody and you think it's somebody, you turn around, you find it's another person. You thought something, you heard something, but it turns out to be incorrect. Now you see when it comes to hearing and seeing and taste, we have other parameters, we have other people to correct us.

Who's gonna correct us if my intellect makes a mistake? If I say, my intellect tells me this is logically true, and you say, no, hold on a sec, my intellect tells me this is logically true. Well, where's the judge, who's

Document

the criterion? When it comes to vision, when it comes to other things, there are plenty of ways we can find out. When it comes to intellect, it doesn't have a precise rule.

So instead of saying that, well, my aql tells me that this verse or this hadith cannot be true, we should rather say, hold on a sec, what gives your aql the right to give that claim in the first place? Our aql doesn't have a precise limit, nor does it have a judge or a criterion. One of the best ways to show this, really and truly, is to look at the philosophers. The philosophers claim that, aql alone leads us to the truth.

We only need our intellect. And yet, from the beginning of time, until our times, no two philosophers have ever agreed about the basic premises of life, of why we are here, of the body and soul of religion. No two philosophers.

And they all claim to come from the aql. It is sufficient to show that the aql alone can never lead us to the ultimate truth to see those who claim that it can.

The contradictions that they have between each other, amongst each other, is sufficient to show that this can never occur.

A Practical Example: The Hadith of the Sun's Prostration

Likewise, on the supposition that such a contradiction could occur, we should actually accuse our intellect before accusing the Quran and Sunnah. Perhaps we didn't understand what the verse or the hadith is telling us.

Let me give you a realistic example. One of the famous things that is being denied in our times, the famous hadith in Bukhari and Muslim, where the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) says that every time the sun sets, what happens? What happens every time the sun sets, according to the hadith?

It goes to the throne of Allah. And it prostrates in front of the throne of Allah. And it asks permission to come from the next day, to rise from the east. And every day it will be given that permission until the day of judgment. When Allah will say, go back to where you came from. And so it shall rise from the west. (Sahih Bukhari 3199, Sahih Muslim 159)

This hadith is in Bukhari and Muslim, it is with the most blatantly correct chain of Islam that we can possibly have. To deny this hadith means you're denying our salah and siyam and zakah and everything because they come with the same chains as this hadith does. Now, very common now is like, oh come on, this hadith cannot be true.

We know for a fact that the sun does not orbit the earth. But rather the earth orbits the sun. And we know that night and day is just the earth coming and turning around in its axis.

And so we think that the sun is rising and coming down in this and that. And so it's not possible that the sun goes anywhere and prostrates and comes back and then asks permission to rise from the other way.

And so this hadith cannot be authentic.

Modern science has proven that this hadith is fabricated and false. Now, instead of jumping to this conclusion, a conclusion which has very evil repercussions, of them by the way as I said, is the salah and siyam and zakah. The same people who told you that we have to pray five times a day, told you this hadith.

Look up the chain, see what else is narrated. If you say this hadith is not authentic, why are you praying five times a day? The Quran doesn't tell you to pray five times a day. And in fact the reality is our Quran comes down through the change of narrators.

How do we know the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said:

ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْكِتَٰبُ لَا رَيْبَ ۛ فِيهِ

Dhalika al-kitabu la rayba feeh (Quran 2:2)

Were we there, did we hear him? We have a book in front of us, the tashkeel can vary. We have no Quran that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) himself wrote. We have to be very careful, the repercussions, the ramifications of opening up this door really and truly are the destruction of our religion of Islam.

Nothing is left, okay. Getting back to the point, how do we understand this hadith? Instead of just throwing it out the window, such ease. Now the hadith is in Bukhari and Muslim.

Rather, impugn your own understanding. Allah says in the Quran, there's a verse in the Quran, there is not a single creation except that it praises Allah. Says that tasbih, subhanAllah, but you don't understand how they do that.

وَلَٰكِن لَّا تَفْقَهُونَ تَسْبِيحَهُمْ

wa lakin la tafqahoona tasbeehahum "But you don't understand how they do that." (Quran 17:44)

Allah says in the Quran, that all of the animals and the sun and the moon, and the stars and even the shade prostrates to Allah. Sajdah, but you don't understand how. Their sajdah is different than your sajdah.

Have you ever seen a horse do sajdah? I haven't. Do we deny the verse in the Quran? No. Allah clearly tells us it's a different way.

The way we do sajdah, we fall down on our face, we fall down and prostrate. That's not the way animals do sajdah. If we don't even understand how animals do sajdah, how are we gonna understand how the sun and moon do sajdah? Impugn your own understanding, and say, yes, I believe what the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) told me, and I also understand that the sajdah of the sun is a special unique type of sajdah, has nothing to do with how we do sajdah.

I believe Allah gives the permission, Allah allows the earth to rotate around the sun and what not. One day something will happen that will change that course of nature. Impugn your own understanding instead of being so easy to reject the hadith of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم)

The Dangerous Implications

As I said, the evil implications for just beginning to reject hadith and sunnah, just because it doesn't make sense to us, it really and truly first and foremost you're rejecting your religion.

Once you start with this hadith for example, then you'll reject qadr because qadr is the most confusing. How can Allah know what's happening in control and we have, you know, with this and that, then qadr is denied. And then you start doubting the prayer and the fast.

What is left of Islam? We have to understand the basis of our religion is the Quran and sunnah. To start doubting it, you're gonna start, you know, taking one pillar, two pillars until there are no pillars remaining. It also implies that Allah has revealed to us in the Quran and the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) has said statements that contradict reason and logic and common sense.

And so you're saying Allah has done something audhu billah imperfectly. Either the Quran is not right or the aql He has given me is not right, one of the two. That's not gonna be, that's not true.

Allah has made us intelligent, rational, logical human beings. But He's also told us, your intelligence has a limit and don't go beyond that limit. You will be able to understand certain things.

Don't go beyond those things. And make taslim, make Islam. What is the meaning of Islam by the way? Submission.

The very meaning of Islam is submission. Make istislam or submission to those matters which are beyond the role of the aql.

Conclusion: The Balanced Role of Intellect in Islam

So basically to conclude, what is the role of rationality and reason and logic and common sense in Islam? And by the way, I've talked about reason and logic in this talk. The reality is we can talk about the same thing about cultural values, the clash of civilizations and morals, the concept of humanism. The same things apply because the clash is the same. The clash is the same.

We can give more examples and more ayat that are specific, but the reality is the same. We are so sure that this is a fundamental human value. We're not even willing to question.

Maybe my understanding is wrong. And maybe the Quran and sunnah has what is the right way to do it. The same applies to what we call rationality.

To summarize the role of logic and reason in Islam, Allah has given us an intelligence, which is one of the best blessings He has given us, a wisdom. But it has its function and role. It has its limits.

Just like all of our faculties, we cannot see in the dark. We cannot hear when there's no air around us. If there's loud, we can't hear it.

Just like all of our other faculties, it has its role. It's not infinite. It has a purpose.

It has a limited functionality. Not unlimited in its scope. The problem with the aql is that you can't see its limitedness.

Unlike for example sight. You turn the lights off, we all know we can't see. If you're wearing something on your ears, we all know you can't hear.

How do we know this about our aql? That's the whole problem that occurs. We don't know this. We have to just understand it.

It's not as easy to prove. Aql is not infallible. Rather, we can forget.

We make mistakes. How many of us, we were so sure at a certain point in time that this must be the right way to go forward. And we did it, and we turned out, man, that was the biggest mistake I ever made.

How many of us? You're so sure this is what I have to do. Your aql tells you. And you find out, you made a total fool out of yourself.

Your aql was wrong. We know this in our daily lives. Well then if your aql is wrong in your daily lives, and what major to choose, what university to go to, who to be friends with, how can it not be wrong when there appears to be a contradiction with the Quran and the sunnah.

The Function of Aql

The aql is an organ by which a person becomes legally responsible. If a person doesn't have aql, Allah says you're forgiven for whatever you do. A mad man, a fool, Allah says you're forgiven.

And the aql corroborates the Quran and sunnah and never contradicts it. The aql, intelligence and rationality supports our religion and never contradicts it. What we need of aql is to know that Islam is true.

To know that the Quran is the book of Allah. To know that this man Muhammad ibn Abdullah al-Qurashi al-Hashimi (صلى الله عليه وسلم) is the last messenger. Those who don't have those basic premises, well then use your aql.

Don't be blind followers. Use your rationality as I quoted you those categories, to come to the conclusion that Allah is your Lord, Islam is your religion, and Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) is your Prophet and

Messenger. Come to this conclusion rationally and logically.

Once you have come to this conclusion:

ٱلَّذِينَ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِٱلْغَيْبِ

Alladheena yu'minoona bil-ghayb "Those who believe in the unseen." (Quran 2:3)

Now you don't take every single ayah, every single hadith and say, let me see do I understand this or not. Why do I have to pray five times a day? Why is zakat 2.5 and not 2.75 or 2.9 or 10.7? Why do I have to go for hajj once in a lifetime, seven times counterclockwise around the Ka'bah with the right shoulder exposed? Why? No. There is no why once you have come to the conclusion Allah has told me to do this.

The Middle Path

So you see Islam, Muslims are not blind followers, nor are they totally using the aql, they're in the middle. Ummatan wasatan in every single field brothers and sisters. When Allah says we are the middle category, that's in every single field.

You go to the Christian, you go to the Hindu, you go to the other religions, don't think, don't think, just believe. Blind faith. In Islam, a person who doesn't believe, you say think, be rational, be logical.

But think about what? Think about the validity of the religion of Islam, of the message of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم). Once you come to this conclusion, it makes no sense now to think about every single itty-bitty minutiae detail. Once you come to the conclusion the Quran is the book of Allah and the sunnah is the way of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) now you submit, now you have Islam.

So Allah has created us with an intellect and He's revealed the scripture and each one is used to help one another, to compliment one another and not to abrogate or cancel one another.

If you think there is a clash, if you think there is a contradiction, make sure that your understanding of the Quran and sunnah is valid. Once it is, then impugn your intellect and don't impugn the Quran and sunnah. Make sure the understanding is valid because remember for example the hadith I quoted of prostrating, the people misunderstood it.

How can the sun prostrate? How can it go somewhere else and do sajda? They didn't understand. Sajda varies from person to person, from thing to thing, to object to object. And so their misunderstanding led them to say it's a scientific fact that the earth goes around the sun.

This hadith has nothing to do with that. This hadith has nothing to do with that. It only says that the sun is asking permission from Allah to do what it's doing.

How it does so, how it prostrates, our minds can never understand.

Final Example from Ali ibn Abi Talib

And let me conclude by quoting a very famous statement of Ali ibn Abi Talib (رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ). Ali ibn Abi Talib (رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ) said if the religion had been based upon pure intellect and rationality, then it would have made more sense to wipe the bottom of the socks when you're doing masah.

It would have made more sense to wipe the bottom of the socks rather than the top. You know what I'm talking about, when you're doing the masah over the socks, what do you do? You take your shoe out and you wipe the top of the sock on both side. Ali ibn Abi Talib said, if our religion was based purely upon rationality, it would have made more sense to wipe the bottom rather than the top.

But I saw the Prophet (صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ) wipe over the top of the socks. Meaning that once you understand Islam is a religion, you submit to the laws of Allah. And that really and truly is the essence of Islam. Let us use our aql to come closer to the message of Islam.

And let us not use the aql to take the place of the message of Islam. May Allah really and truly grant us the iman, the istislam, the Islam to understand this very fundamental point.

Closing
