The Prophet's Smile

The Prophet's Smile

Speaker: Shaykh Yaser Birjas

Opening

Peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you.

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Khutbat al-Hajah (Opening Khutbah)

All praise is for Allah. We praise Him, seek His help, ask for His guidance, seek His forgiveness, and repent to Him. We seek refuge in Allah from the evil of our souls and the evil of our actions. Whomsoever Allah guides, none can misguide him, and whomsoever He misguides, none can guide him. And I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, alone, with no partner. And I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.

"O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims."

The Prophet's Love for His Ummah

The gathering of his companions, and he asked a question, fa qalas salallahu alayhi wa sallam:

لَيْتَنِي أُلْقَى إِخْوَانِي

(Sahih Muslim 249)

"I wish, I would love to live until I could meet my brothers." Qalu ya rasoolallah, awalasna ikhwanak? So they told him, ya rasoolallah, don't you consider us your brothers? Fa qalas salallahu alayhi wa sallam:

(Sahih Muslim 249)

"You are my companions. My brothers are those who will come after my time. They will believe in me, they will believe in my message, even though they haven't seen me."

Rasoolallah salallahu alayhi wa sallam wished to live your time. He loved salawatullahi wa salamu alayh to meet all of you, to be amongst you. You know why? Because he knows salawatullahi wa salamu alayh, how much you would need him in such a difficult time like this.

Allah's Description of the Prophet

Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is describing the messenger of Allah, salallahu alayhi wa sallam. Allah azza wa jalla sent him, rasool, as a messenger of Allah:

عَزِيزٌ عَلَيْهِ مَا عَنِتُمْ حَرِيصٌ عَلَيْكُم بِالْمُؤْمِنِينَ رَءُوفٌ رَّحِيمٌ

"Whatever afflicted you, afflicts him salallahu alayhi wa sallam with grief and sorrow. Any hardship that befell you, it brings sorrow and grief to Rasoolallah salallahu alayhi wa sallam - He is so keen for your welfare."

He looks for the benefit of his community, of his ummah. بِالْمُؤْمِنِينَ رَءُوفٌ رَّحِيمٌ - For the believers, he was very compassionate, merciful, salawatullahi wa salamu alayh.

For this reason, he knew salawatullahi wa salamu alayh, in a time that is difficult as ours, we needed his guidance. We needed his presence, salawatullahi wa salamu alayh. Unfortunately, we don't have that.

But what we have, that we always live by, through this difficult time, are the beautiful memories of the life of Muhammad salallahu alayhi wa sallam. And the hope and the desire that one day we will meet him salallahu alayhi wa sallam in the akhirah.

A Personal Story

Just a few days ago, I was chanting words of poetry in my house. My 9 year old son, he comes and he asks me, Baba, what does that mean? So I explained to him, I said, I'm talking about my beloved Rasoolallah salallahu alayhi wa sallam. And I was speaking to him briefly. Then he said, you know Baba, I feel sad.

I said, why is that, my son? He goes, I wish that we lived during the time of Rasoolallah salallahu alayhi wa sallam. I wish I could see him. And wallahi, that brought tears to my eyes.

His innocence and his honest response to something that he is not influenced by all these false role models and examples in this life. Kids, they know more about all these so-called celebrities in this society than what they know about Rasoolallah salallahu alayhi wa sallam.

The Challenge of Our Time

What makes us sad towards these days is when we see people, unfortunately, praise and protect and harbour those who attack the honour of Muhammad salallahu alayhi wa sallam in the name of so many values.

And they do not respect the values of the Muslims and the believers. 1.5 billion people, fifth of humanity, disregarded in honour of protecting someone's so-called values. What even hurts more when you have this attitude from politicians awarding those who have once attacked the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam through their pens or their tongues, disrespect completely to the honour of Rasoolallah salallahu alayhi wa sallam being honoured by people.

So, it is so sad when we see that. But what is more sad is when you ask the Muslims themselves. How much they know about Rasoolallah salallahu alayhi wa sallam?

The Ignorance About the Prophet

You know, the non-Muslims when they do what they do and when they say what they say, they are doing it out of sheer ignorance. They have no idea about Muhammad salallahu alayhi wa sallam and the only thing they know about him is what they have been fed in the news and that negative propaganda about Muhammad salallahu alayhi wa sallam.

For centuries, not just for me recently, I was reading a book about a historian and a traveller from Europe who went to the Muslim world back in the 1600s and the early 1700s. And he was mentioning the same stereotypes about Muslims and about the non-Muslims and their beliefs in Muhammad salallahu alayhi wa sallam.

So, it's no strange that these ideas are still actually going around among the non-Muslims. That's what they read. And that's what they have been reading.

They don't know who Muhammad salallahu alayhi wa sallam was. And I guarantee you if they know who Muhammad salallahu alayhi wa sallam was, the real Muhammad salallahu alayhi wa sallam, wallah, they will show that respect that is due to Rasoolallah salallahu alayhi wa sallam.

But our problem is when you ask the Muslims, how much do you know about Rasoolallah salallahu alayhi wa sallam? Little that they know.

And if they know anything about him, they know what they know in the seerah. Meaning just the historical events. They know about Ghazwat Badr, about Fath Makkah.

They know about the birth of the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam and few events and history of the life of Rasoolallah salallahu alayhi wa sallam. But ask them what do they know about his akhlaaq? They give you slogans. They say:

(Sahih Muslim 746)

The answer of Aisha radiallahu ta'ala his manners was but the Qur'an itself. Which is true and indeed. But can you explain this to me? Do you know how he behaved salallahu alayhi wa sallam? And based on your knowledge, are you following his example? Do you show the world who Muhammad salallahu alayhi wa sallam was?

Our ignorance will really contribute to the crisis that people see and have around. We see actually around here when it comes to attacking the honour of Muhammad salallahu alayhi wa sallam.

The Human Side of the Prophet

And in this short khutbah inshallah ta'ala, I would like to expose myself and you to the real Muhammad salallahu alayhi wa sallam, the man. The human side of Rasoolallah salallahu alayhi wa sallam.

In Suratul Kahf, Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says to the Prophet Muhammad salallahu alayhi wa sallam:

قُلْ إِنَّمَا أَنَا بَشَرٌ مِّثْلُكُمْ

"That's the very last ayah of Suratul Kahf. Which you probably read every single week if you maintain recitation of Suratul Kahf. You say, Qul, innama ana bashar. O Muhammad, say to them, I am but a human being. Qul, innama ana bashar."

But then some people might suspect and say, yeah he was a human being, I agree. But he was different. He was a superior human being.

Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala continues right away. مِتْكُمْ - just like you. That means you have no excuse not to follow my example.

You cannot say you are a superior human being. You cannot say you are an angel kind of human being. You cannot say that.

Because Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says - just like you.

It's Realism, Not Idealism

Today when we read about the Prophet's salallahu alayhi wa sallam level of devotion and ibadah, many people, they look at it and they say, wow, that was really amazing. And they call this idealism.

No, wallahi, it's not idealism. It's realism. Because when you say idealism, you convince yourself, that's above my level. I can't achieve that. I can't do this because there was Rasulallah salallahu alayhi wa sallam.

Wallahi, it is not idealism. It's realism. Because the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam did that. And the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam was able to do it and he's a human being just like you.

Therefore you can.

The Story of the Three Companions

When three young people came to the houses of Rasulallah salallahu alayhi wa sallam and they were asking about the level of his ibadah and his worship. And when they were told, they were able to do that.

They said, Rasulallah salallahu alayhi wa sallam, He was a great messenger of Allah and Allah has forgiven all his sins. As for us, One of them, he said, for me, I'm going to devote my time for fasting. I will not break a day.

The other, he said, I will spend my night in qiyam ulil, I will not go to bed, I will not rest at night. And the third, he said, I will completely disconnect myself from the pleasure of this dunya. Which means I will abandon the pleasure of this dunya, I will practice celibacy.

And when Rasulallah salallahu alayhi wa sallam heard that, He gave a whole khutbah on this issue. What's wrong with people saying so and so? And then he mentioned what they said to the public. Then he gave them the instructions, salallahu alayhi wa sallam.

The Prophet's Balanced Approach

He said:

(Sahih al-Bukhari 5063)

I'm the most faithful to Allah, subhanallah, ma'a al-zia. I'm the one who pleases Allah the most and has the most righteousness towards the deen. However, I fast and I break my fast.

I pray the night prayer and I get some sleep. And I marry women, just like anybody else. Then he said, Who does not follow my example is not from my true followers.

Many of us do that. But our sunnah that we follow, unfortunately, is that we break our fast and we never fast. We sleep, we never wake up for qiyam ul-layl.

And when we get the pleasure of this dunya, we look to have 100% pleasure in this dunya. And we don't look into the other aspect of the devotional part of the life of Muhammad salallahu alayhi wa sallam.

The Prophet's Beautiful Smile

Ibadallah, Rasulullah salallahu alayhi wa sallam, just the moment of seeing his face will be enough evidence for many to know that he's telling the truth.

How many people they embrace Islam at the sight of the beautiful face of Muhammad salallahu alayhi wa sallam? His face was described many, many times in many ahadith:

فَكَأَنَّمَا وَجْهُهُ وَرَقَةٌ مُصْحَفِ

(Sahih al-Bukhari 3552)

(Sahih Muslim 2344)

The Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam's face will be shining with this beautiful smile sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. Many of the sahaba saying:

مَا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَّا تَبَسَّمَ فِي وَجْهِي

(Sahih Muslim 2475)

I have never seen Rasulullah salallahu alayhi wa sallam but smile in my face. Rasulullah salallahu alayhi wa sallam had this beautiful smile.

The Prophet's smile is an amazing smile. When people look at it, they will just rejoice. گادُوا أَنْ يُفْتَنُوا - Some of the sahaba when they were making salah and they saw the Prophet smiling in their face, they almost left the salah to go and meet him salallahu alayhi wa sallam.

Why is that? Because they can see sincerity, honesty. They see the trustworthiness in his face salallahu alayhi wa sallam.

The Story of Abdullah ibn Salam

Abdullah ibn Salam, he was a rabbi in Medina. And when he heard about the presence of this man, so called Prophet, he wanted to see. Who is this man they call Prophet? I want to see if this is the one we have been studying about all these years and generations.

(Sunan al-Tirmidhi 2485)
