AYA Crossroads - Who Do You Follow? - Imam Yaseen Shaikh
Opening
"In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful."
"May the peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you."
"Indeed, all praise is due to Allah. We praise Him, seek His help, and ask for His forgiveness."
"And we seek refuge in Allah from the evils of ourselves and from the wickedness of our deeds."
"And I bear witness that there is no deity other than Allah, alone without any partners."
"And I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger, may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him."
We begin by praising Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. And we ask Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala to shower His infinite mercies and blessings upon us.
I'm very glad to be here today, alhamdulillah. And I appreciate the invitation to come out here. It was a brutal drive from Baltimore, especially 495. It was a very brutal drive, alhamdulillah. But bi-fadlillah we came here. One of the blessings about coming to Adam Center is I can pray salah with qasr, alhamdulillah.
Because it's over 48 miles. So as soon as I leave my city district, it's over 48 miles. It's a nice blessing to be able to come and shorten my prayers, alhamdulillah.
The Importance of Choosing the Right Role Model
Today we're going to speak about a very important topic. A topic that will direct us and guide us in what we want in life. Many times we grow up with many individuals around us who try to mentor us, to teach us, to guide us.
And each one of them has our best interest at heart. We grow up around our parents, siblings, parents who love us unconditionally. Siblings that love us and hate us at the same time.
But love us more than they hate us. Uncles, aunts, cousins. And then when we venture out of our homes and we go to the school environment, we see teachers.
We come to the masjid, we see our imams and our scholars. We see ulema, youth directors, guides, mentors. And then as we are growing up, we go through different phases in our lives.
We go through a curious phase, an inquisitive phase. And we're always seeking some direction in life. When we're going through these various phases, it's important for us to understand who we take as our mentor and our role model as the effects of our decision will definitely come in front of us.
Whatever decisions we make, we will always feel the consequences of that decision. When we're young, at times, we don't think that far ahead. At times, we don't look into the future.
There are so many times that I've had youth come to me and say, I am such and such, and I am approximately 15, 16, 18, 20. And I think that I want to do this in life. And this is the direction I want to take, and this is the decision I'm going to make.
My parents don't understand me, but I think this is the right thing. And many times we base our decisions on the observation that we make of society around us, of things we may view and watch on the television, of trends that we become accustomed to via social media. And many times we make grave mistakes in choosing a direction in life.
The Danger of Wrong Role Models
Many times we idolize certain individuals and personalities who don't offer much to society. Certain times we view certain people in such high regard that have nothing to offer us, whether it's intellectually, spiritually, or morally. And we make some grave mistakes in doing so.
But let me be very clear here. If we have made mistakes in the past, if we have made the wrong decision, we always have the chance and the opportunity to reverse it. Because no matter what we do in our past, our future is unblemished.
Our future is untainted. Our future is still clear. So if we've made wrong choices in the past, if we have chosen wrong role models, if we made wrong decisions, we always have a chance to reverse it because Alhamdulillah, Bifadlillah, we have something in our deen called redemption.
We have the opportunity to turn to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. And we have an opportunity to realize. The bigger question is, when are we going to realize? And the greater question is, what decisions shall I make?
As I look here in the room, Alhamdulillah, I find that most of you are young. And it's a blessing to be young. Because when you're young, you're allowed to make a few mistakes. But when you become old and ragged, like myself, then you can't make those same mistakes.
If you make the right decisions at a young age, Inshallah, it will bode well for your future. And the decisions you make now need to be strong and firm decisions upon which you can erect your future. Because if you have foundations that are weak, then your future cannot rely on such weak foundations.
But if you strengthen those foundations, and you nurture them and you water them, then you will erect a very strong building. And that determines your future, Inshallah.
The Limits of Human Faculty and the Need for Revelation
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala created all of us. That's our belief. This beautiful dunya, this world, this magnificent creation of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and this vast system that we live in is a blessing of Allah. And whilst Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala blessed us with many things, He also blessed us with a mind, an intellect.
And every blessing that Allah has given us, every faculty that we have, has a certain parameter and boundary. It doesn't go beyond that. There's a scope.
So Allah gave us eyes. The eyes have a scope. There's boundaries. Our hearing, there's a scope for it. Even our intellect and our minds have a scope. Certain things we can learn about the universe that we live in by mere observation.
Certain things through reflection and pondering. But then there are certain questions that we can't answer. And the answers to those questions lie in the revelation of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.
There comes a point when our faculties stop. There comes a point when we need to submit to something higher. There comes a point when we need to realize that we are weak and feeble.
There comes a point when we realize that we are restricted. And we have to submit to the awe of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. We can find out many things and discover many things through observation.
But the question of why we exist. What's the purpose? What's our direction? What's our goal? What are we aiming for? What are we doing here? That lies in the revelation of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. The revelation of Allah is the Quran.
Allah's System: Kitab with Rijal
And Allah ta'ala revealed the Quran. But Allah did not stop there. With the Quran and with previous scriptures that Allah revealed with truth, He sent with them role models.
He sent with them teachers. He sent with them guides. When Allah revealed the Torah, He sent with it Musa (عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ - alayhis salam). When He revealed the Zaboor, He sent with it Dawood (عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ - alayhis salam). When He sent and revealed the Injeel, the gospel, He sent with it Isa (عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ - alayhis salam)
And when He revealed the Quran, The universal message, The unchanged message, The message that is for all times and all places, The message that is unrestricted, The message that is the speech of Allah, The quality of Allah, The attributes of Allah, Uncreated.
Allah ta'ala sent with it the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wasallam). So Allah has a system when He sends the kitab, He sends the Rajul, the Rijal with it. Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala did not reveal the Quran without a teacher, a guide. And it was the function and the station of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wasallam) To convey that book to the people.
But Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasalam was not merely a mailman, A postman, a delivery man, Who came to deliver that message. But he was a teacher and a guide, As Allah ta'ala has highlighted in Surah Ali Imran, In Surah Al-Jumu'ah, When he says that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasalam, His function was to recite the book to the people, the Quran, And also to teach its meanings to the people, And to teach them Hikmah.
Hikmah, Imam Shafi'i says, is Sunnah.
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says:
"And We did not send any messenger except to be obeyed by permission of Allah."
We revealed the Quran as a reminder. Why a reminder? Because we already have the natural disposition, The Fitrah, in which we recognize our creator Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. And when the light of the Quran connects with the light that is instilled in every human, Which is the inclination to Tawheed and the oneness of Allah, It guides the person to ultimate light.
Allah said, we revealed the Quran as a reminder, So you can explain it to the people, O Prophet alayhi salatu wasalam.
Criteria for Choosing a Role Model
The question is, When we choose role models, Upon which basis and what criteria do we choose a role model? When we're looking for a direction in life, Upon which basis and what qualities do we select a role model? What does that person have to offer us? What can that person give us? How did they live their life? What did people say about them? How was he seen amongst his community and society? How was he viewed by his contemporaries?
Those are the qualities we need to seek, When we look for a role model. And when we ask these questions, There was nobody better than the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasalam, To choose as a role model.
People that we idolize in our day and age. Some people have great gifts that they can give to humanity. And there have been many people in the past, That have contributed much to society.
Many people came with ideas and theories and thoughts, Which they gave to society, Which were good, which were fine, which were acceptable, But they were restricted to their time, to their place. But what the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasalam brought, Is khair, is good for his time, for all times, Right until the day of judgment. So his message was universal.
The benefits of them were universal. And they were for every human being to benefit from. The system that he taught, The manner in which he taught it, Targeting the intellect of man, The spirit of man, The morals of man, Were the same messages that all the Prophets brought before him.
Allah's Completion of the Deen
A universal message that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala loved. So much so, that in Surah Al-Ma'idah, When Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala speaks about this, In a beautiful way Allah explains, That the model the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasalam brought, The system that he brought, The message he delivered, Is the complete model. Allah says:
"This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion."
Allah is pleased with Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasalam. Allah is pleased with his method, With his delivery, With the way he lived his life. Allah raised his character. Allah raised his character and Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala said, He is the benchmark.
He is the criteria. He is the standard that you have to follow.
Reflecting on the Prophet as a Role Model
When we think about the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasalam, What's the first thing that comes to our mind? What's the first thing that comes to our mind when we think about the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasalam? Sometimes when you're sitting and you're thinking about the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasalam, Or maybe when you're saying salat wasalam upon Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasalam on Thursday evenings, Or in your daily adhkar and your awrad.
What do you think of when you hear about the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasalam? Anybody? Anybody in the crowd? That he was mercy for the world, mashallah. Anything else? Anything? Nobody thinks about the Prophet? Nobody? Right. Okay.
Some serious issues here. I think everybody is too shy to speak. Right.
So, I'm sure all of us think about the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasalam. And when we do, we think about different aspects. Sometimes we think about his personality.
Sometimes we think about his image. Sometimes we think about how beautiful he was as a person. We think about his generosity, his compassion, his love, his mercy.
We think about his unselfishness. We think about the trials and tribulations that he faced. We think about the events and the occurrences in his life.
We think about the difficulties he went through in spreading the message of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. But at times, we don't think about the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasalam on a human level. Sometimes we miss this very important point.
The Prophet's Human Roles
We think about the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasalam, And obviously, he was the best of Allah's creation. And obviously, he was the leader of the ummah. And obviously, he would be at the forefront on the day of judgment.
And obviously, he's the leader of the whole of creation. Which he said in the hadith:
Reference: Sunan at-Tirmidhi (Hadith 3615)
I am the leader of the children of Adam, and I have no pride. There is no boasting or no arrogance.
Yes, he was the best. Yes, his character was perfected. Yes, he was the role model.
Yes, he was the standard. But seldom do we think about the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wasalam) on a human level. How was he, (عليه السلام - alayhi salatu wasalam), as a father? How was he, (عليه السلام - alayhi salatu wasalam), as a community leader? How was he, the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wasalam), as a friend to Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (رضي الله تعالى عنه - radiallahu ta'ala anhu) and the rest of the sahaba? How was he, the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wasalam), as a spouse? How was he, the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wasalam), as a community member?
How was the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wasalam) towards people of other faiths? How did the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wasalam) live in a hostile city like Makkah Mukarramah? How did he deal with people in a peaceful city like Madinah Munawwarah? What was the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wasalam's) behavior like towards people who ridiculed him, who hated him, who persecuted him, who harmed him, who boycotted him, who drove him out of his city?
When we think about these aspects of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wasalam), we come to realize that there was no role model greater than the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wasalam).
There is no model more perfect than his model. There is no model more beautiful than his model. There is no one that deserves to be followed more than the Prophet (عليه السلام - alayhi salatu wasalam).
Nobody who deserves to be loved more than the Prophet (عليه السلام - alayhi salatu wasalam). For his willingness to sacrifice everything he had for the Ummah. For the compassion he showed towards the Ummah.
For the beautiful characteristics and the features the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wasalam) had. For the love that he demonstrated towards the Ummah.
When we think about role models and when we think about personalities, contemporaries in our time. When we think about statesmen and prime ministers and presidents. When we think about sports stars. And then we compare them to what the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wasalam) brought.
What he delivered. What he gave to humanity. What he did for us.
There is no match. There is no comparison. There is no one that could stand on an equal pedestal to the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wasalam).
What he brought was great. It was magnificent. And that's why when Allah (تعالى - ta'ala) speaks about him in suratul ahzab.
He says:
Indeed for you in the messenger of Allah is a beautiful example. A beautiful role model. Uswa hasana doesn't just mean beautiful.
But it also means a complete role model. He was a complete role model. And that's why the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wasalam) said, Because Allah (تعالى - ta'ala) perfected the sunnah.
Allah perfected the behavior of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wasalam).
The Context of Surah Al-Ahzab
What's interesting is that this verse that I recited to you from suratul ahzab. Is in a beautiful surah, suratul ahzab.
Has anybody here studied the tafsir of suratul ahzab? The explanation of suratul ahzab. Okay, suratul ahzab is, if I remember correctly, surah number 33. And it's in the 21st juz.
Starts after suratul sajdah. This surah was revealed in the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wasalam's) Madinah life. Means, after his hijrah.
And it was revealed approximately after the battle of ahzab. The battle of ahzab was the battle of the confederates. And if you read the seerah, you will know that this was a major expedition.
When all the tribes of arabia came to attack the muslims in madinah munawwara. This surah was revealed after that occasion, that incident. Allah (تعالى - ta'ala) begins the surah by saying:
Oh nabi, do not give in, do not give in to the disbelievers and the hypocrites.
Allah says to him, follow that which has been revealed to your lord. Then Allah says, and it's a very interesting verse:
Allah did not create in a man two hearts.
Nobody has two hearts. Has there been any human being with two hearts? Allah says, There has been no man that Allah created with two hearts in his body. Only one heart.
Whilst there are many explanations for this. One explanation is that if your heart has the love for Allah and his rasool (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wasallam), it will not have any room for loving anybody else. If you have
love for other things, things that are not beneficial to you, then you don't have enough room to love Allah and his rasool (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wasallam).
It's very interesting, after this Allah (تعالى - ta'ala) says:
The prophet is more closer to you than yourselves. Allah says, the prophet is closer to you than yourselves. Then Allah (سبحانه وتعالى - subhanahu wa ta'ala) mentions the incident of Ahzab.
The Battle of Ahzab and the Test of the Muslims
And as you are aware, Ahzab was when groups came to attack Madina Munawwara. And rasool (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wasallam) had a strategy upon the advice of who? Who was Salman Farsi (رضي الله عنه - radiallahu anhu), the Persian Sahabi. And his advice was what? That you must dig trenches outside of Madina Munawwara, on the outskirts.
But the Muslims went through some severe tests. Allah says:
At that point, the Muslims were tested greatly and they were shook. Allah says, we shook them.
They were shook. They were afraid. They were going through some tough times.
There was fear that the enemy can enter from other angles. Because the Jewish community, Banu Qurayza, had sided with the confederates. They had broken their treaty and they joined the conspiracy to attack Muslims.
So there was genuine fear. Now imagine at this time, what a person wants to do, what they could do. And look at the difference between the Sahaba and the difference between Bani Israel.
You know Bani Israel, of course, the children of Israel. When they were rescued from Fir'aun, when they ran away, when they fled from that place. Suddenly, they found themselves in the front of the Red Sea.
In front of the Red Sea. And behind them was the army of Fir'aun. What did they say at that point? They started criticizing Musa (عليه السلام - alayhi as-salam). Oh, you want to kill us, you brought us here to kill us.
But the Sahaba (رضي الله عنهم - radiyallahu anhum) were positive. Despite the fear, despite all the circumstances, they were positive. After mentioning all of this, Allah says:
Indeed in the messenger of Allah, there is a beautiful role model for you.
A beautiful example for you. When there is turmoil in your life, When there are events and circumstances that you have no control over, When you're going through difficult and tough times, When you're looking for a direction, When you're looking for a role model, When you're looking for a mentor, When you're looking for a coach and a guide and a teacher, Don't look beyond the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wasalam). That's what Allah (سبحانه وتعالى - subhanahu wa ta'ala) is saying.
One thing we have to remember is, The nazm of the Quran, the arrangement of the verses, Has great wisdom in it.
Has great wisdom in it. This wasn't put together by chance. This wasn't the work of a human.
This is divine. These are the words of Allah (سبحانه وتعالى - subhanahu wa ta'ala). And despite the Quran being revealed gradually over a period of 23 years, The arrangement was also divine.
There are so many lessons to be learnt. The more we learn, the more we realize we don't know anything. The more we jump into the ocean of knowledge, The more we realize that there's so much more to do.
We can't even scratch the surface as they say. So at this point, the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wasalam) was the role model for people. Allah said to the Sahaba, If you want to pass this test, Don't look beyond the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wasalam).
And what we can learn from this is that when we're going through our own battles, When we're looking for a direction, When we're looking for a guide, When we're looking for a mentor and a coach and a teacher, Somebody from whom we can learn, Somebody who went through many sacrifices, The most complete model to follow in such times is the model of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wasalam).
His model was not just beautiful, But it was a complete model because the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wasalam) had many parts of his life from which we can learn.
Examples of the Prophet's Character
The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wasalam) demonstrated such love and mercy as we see after the battle or the liberation of Makkah. And we know the seerah, the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wasalam) was driven out of Makkah, his hometown. If you're driven out of your hometown, a place that you love deeply, And then you return to that place and you face the people that hated you, That persecuted, tortured, harmed you, ridiculed you, spoke evil of you, faced you in many wars.
How would you behave with such a person? What would your behavior be like when the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wasalam) liberated Makkah? When he marched upon Makkah victoriously with 10,000 plus Sahaba (رضي الله عنهم - radiyallahu anhum) He called the people that hated him, that ridiculed him, and he asked them, What's your opinion regarding me? They said, You're an honorable brother, son of an honorable person. The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wasalam) said:
Reference: Quran 12:92
No reproach on you today. May Allah forgive you. He's the most merciful. That was the behavior of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wasalam).
You're free, you're free, go and do what you want, go. And these same people came back with:
A role model in the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wasalam). When a Bedouin came to him, and you have to remember the time was a time of great pride and honor.
People used to have a lot of pride. The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wasalam) is with his Sahaba, his companions. And a Bedouin comes, and he grabs the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wasalam) by his collar.
For no reason whatsoever. And he says, O Muhammad, give me some money, I want some cash, give me some money. Some of the Sahaba were sitting there, and they became enraged.
And they wanted to harm him for treating the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wasalam) in such a manner. Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wasalam) said, leave him alone, give him what he needs, give him what he needs.
Once a Jewish man who was owed money by the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wasalam) came to the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wasalam). And he said, where's my money? And he abused the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wasalam). Umar (رضي الله عنه - radiyallahu anhu) was enraged, and he wasn't ready to accept such, he wasn't ready to tolerate this behavior.
But the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wasalam) told Umar, leave him, give him his money and give him some extra. For he had to be patient. So the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wasalam) demonstrated beautiful behavior.
Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wasalam) was compassionate. Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wasalam) was loving. His model was the perfect model.
The Consequences of Following or Neglecting the Prophet's Model
If we take the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wasalam) as our model, we will definitely be successful in this world. If we neglect this model and we choose different paths, then those paths can be devastating. Because whoever we choose to follow, whoever we choose to be like, whoever we make our role model, will impact our life and our decisions.
The Path of Continuous Learning
InshaAllah I'm going to end here. And we pray that Allah (سبحانه وتعالى - subhanahu wa ta'ala) gives us the ability to learn how to live our lives, gives us the ability to make the right and correct decisions, and that Allah (سبحانه وتعالى - subhanahu wa ta'ala) instills in our hearts the love for the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wasalam) and the ability to adopt the Sunnah of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wasalam). To look at the Sunnah whenever we are in difficulty, to adopt Sunnah and to increase our love for the Sunnah by learning about him. This comes through great learning.
We have to make effort to learn. We have to continue our path of learning. What's happened today is we depend on listening to a few lectures here and there and we don't choose consistent systems or paths to increase our knowledge.
We need to be consistent in our learning. The more we learn, the more we will develop love for the Prophet (صَلَّىٰ ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). How can we follow him if we don't know him? How can we love him if we don't know him?

One book that I would definitely advise you guys to read inshaAllah, look it up, is a book, it's from the book of Imam Tirmidhi (رَحِمَهُ اللهُ - rahimahullah) called the Shama'il. Shama'il which describes the Prophet (صَلَّىٰ ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). His features, the way he behaved, what he ate, what he looked like, what his hair was like, what his clothes were like, how he treated people, how he sat, how he walked, how he talked.

It's a beautiful book. Ash-Shifa'u Bita'arrufih Ruqooqil Mustafa - Healing through recognition of the rights of the Chosen One. Healing, healing ourselves through recognizing the rights of the Chosen One, the Prophet (صَلَّىٰ ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
