Opening Dua

"O Lord, expand for me my breast [with assurance] and ease for me my task and untie the knot from my tongue that they may understand my speech."

"O Allah, make us firm at the time of death with the testimony that there is no god but Allah."

"O Allah, make us among those who believe, do righteous deeds, and advise one another to truth and advise one another to patience."

"Lord of the worlds."

Historical Context of Surah Al-Ankabut

This remarkable surah was revealed during one of the most challenging periods in early Islamic history. It came at the end of the Meccan period for the Prophet ﷺ, when the animosity towards the Muslims had intensified to such a degree that there were schemes and plots not only to torture and hurt Muslims but also to kill the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The situation had become so dire that the only outlet left was going to be hijrah - migration from Mecca to Medina.

Allah's Strategic Preparation for Hijrah

In this surah, Allah جل و عز gives hints towards hijrah without stating it directly, as it was a covert operation. If He had said it directly, the kuffar would have known that the Muslims were planning to leave and would have killed them before they got a chance to escape.

Allah's approach was strategically subtle:

  • He describes Nuh عليه السلام leaving his people via the ark.
  • He mentions Lut عليه السلام saying:

"I am making hijrah to my Lord, He will guide me"

  • By the end of the surah, Allah instructs not to argue with the people of the book except in a better way - and the people of the book were not in Mecca but in Medina

This was Allah's way of mentally preparing the Muslims for migration without exposing the plan to their enemies.

The Universal Nature of These Teachings

Imam Al-Qurtubi beautifully noted that even though these verses came down in response to specific sahaba being tortured and beaten, their principles extend to the entire ummah of Muhammad ﷺ until the Day of Judgment. The gift of (لَا إِلهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ) is not a cheap gift - it comes with a price that believers must be willing to pay.

Understanding Trials as a Test of Faith

Difficulties that Allah gives to Muslims, whether in personal life or as nations, are Allah's way of seeing who wants to hold on to their iman in the hardest of times. This is the essence of belief in the unseen (الَّذِينَ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِالْغَيْبِ - Quran 2:3) Sometimes Allah's mercy, justice, and plan are all in the unseen world.

As Allah says:

"Allah will not inform you of what's happening behind the scenes."

The Pattern of Divine Testing

The surah begins uniquely with Alif Lam Meem, unlike most surahs with disconnected letters that immediately mention Allah's revelation. This exception, along with Surah Ar-Rum, may indicate that understanding how to react during trials is one of the main practical lessons of the Quran.

The Opening Challenge

"Do people think they will be left alone just because they said 'We believe' and they will not be tested?"

The word yuftanoon (يُفْتَنُونَ) comes from the Arabic root فَتَنَ, originally used when gold is purified through intense heat to remove impurities. This suggests that believers are like gold to Allah - valuable and worth purifying through trials.

Historical Precedent

"And We certainly tested those before them, and Allah will surely make evident those who are truthful, and He will surely make evident the liars."

Modern Application: Maintaining Islamic Identity

Many Muslims today feel pressure to compromise their visible Islamic identity due to societal challenges. Some consider removing beards, taking off hijab, or blending in to avoid persecution. However, Allah's response is clear: Did you think you wouldn't be tested?

The most beloved person to ever live was Rasulullah ﷺ, yet people absolutely hated him. The hatred towards Muslims came even before the instructions that make us visibly Muslim were revealed. What was truly offensive to the Mecans was that Muslims:

  • Didn't budge from their faith
  • Spoke out against injustice
  • Stood up for the oppressed

The Quran criticized social evils:

(Quran 83:1-3) - about business fraud.

Divine Justice for Oppressors

"Do those who commit sins think they can outrun Us? How terrible is their judgment!"

This verse consoles all victims - whether of personal persecution or societal injustice. No one escapes Allah's justice unless they make sincere repentance.

Placing Hope in the Right Place

The key lesson for believers during trials is understanding where to place expectations. We cannot change people - only Allah can change hearts.

"Whoever hopes for the meeting with Allah - indeed, the term decreed by Allah is coming. And He is the Hearing, the Knowing."

Our primary hopes must lie with Allah. Whether in personal relationships or societal challenges, Allah is the only one who will never disappoint.

The Call to Active Struggle

"And whoever strives only strives for [the benefit of] himself. Indeed, Allah is free from need of the worlds."

During persecution, Muslims must not retreat defensively but struggle more actively for their faith. This struggle is not for Allah's benefit - He is independent of all creation - but for our own protection and salvation.

Warning Against Retreat

The danger of taking steps back from Islam is clearly stated:

"If you turn away, He will replace you with another people; then they will not be the likes of you."

Allah doesn't need any particular nation. When people turn away from His guidance, He replaces them with others who will carry the message forward.

The True Purpose of Submission

When we bow down before Allah in fear and humility, it means we don't bow before anyone else. We don't fear anyone else, submit to anyone else, or accept bullying from anyone else. The only fear we have is that of Allah - this is the point of our prayers and worship.

Conclusion and Prayer

This is the time to hold strong, show confidence in Islam, and fear nobody but Allah. When critics say Islam is the problem, we know that Islam is the only solution. Allah has charged us with the responsibility of being true ambassadors of this faith.

May Allah make us of those who turn back to Him in times of trial, understanding that this is the price we must pay to hold on to our iman. May Allah make us sincere in our efforts to bring light to Islam and the word of Allah in this society.

Closing Supplications

"O Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You blessed Abraham and the family of Abraham. Indeed, You are Praiseworthy and Glorious."

(Quran 16:90) "Indeed, Allah orders justice and good conduct and giving to relatives and forbids immorality and bad conduct and oppression. He admonishes you that perhaps you will be reminded. And remember Allah; He will remember you. And be grateful to Him for His favors; He will increase you [therein]. And the remembrance of Allah is greater. And Allah knows that which you do."

"Establish prayer. Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allah is greater. And Allah knows that which you do."

(4:103 Quran) "Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers a decree of specified times."
