Hell: The Most Horrible Place

Hell: The Most Horrible Place

Khutbah by Shaykh Mohammed Faqih

Opening of Khutbah

All praise is due to Allah. We praise Him, we seek His help, and we seek His forgiveness. We seek refuge with Allah from the evil of our souls and from the evil of our deeds. Whomsoever Allah guides, none can misguide him, and whomsoever He allows to go astray, none can guide him.

I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship except Allah alone, with no partner or associate, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.

"O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims."

"O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul and created from it its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women. And fear Allah, through whom you ask one another, and the wombs. Indeed Allah is ever, over you, an Observer."

"O you who have believed, fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice. He will [then] amend for you your deeds and forgive you your sins. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly attained a great attainment."

Introduction: The Story of Adam and Paradise

Dear brothers and sisters, in Islam, Allah created Adam and placed him in Paradise for a short period of time.

Then Adam was tempted. He was prohibited from one tree, one single tree in Paradise. He was told not to eat from it, while he could enjoy anything else, an endless number of trees. But that one tree, stay away from it.

And Adam was tempted. And Adam sinned, and he ate from that tree. And the result of that sin was that he was removed from Paradise and placed on this planet.

And then here we are. And he was told that when guidance comes to him and his followers and his children and his descendants, whoever follows that guidance will go back home, Paradise.

You were told about some of the blessings of Paradise last week. Brothers and sisters, for the believer, that is home. And that's what one of us and every single one of us actually has to be aiming to and wishing for, to go home, Paradise.

The Hadith About Hurrying to Paradise

The Prophet, peace be upon him, says: Whoever fears the fall of the night will hurry up to go home. And whoever hurries up will reach home before the fall of the night.

And in this metaphor, the Prophet ﷺ was alluding to Paradise. If you want to reach Paradise before it's too late, then you have to hurry up. And you have to fear, as the Prophet ﷺ mentioned in this hadith.

And then he said:

أَلَا إِنَّ سِلْعَةَ اللَّهِ غَالِيَةٌ، أَلَا إِنَّ سِلْعَةَ اللَّهِ الْجَنَّةُ

Sahih at-Tirmidhi

Indeed, the commodity of Allah is precious. Indeed, the commodity of Allah is Paradise. And it's very precious. And you have to pay the price.

The Balance: Paradise and Hellfire

Brothers and sisters, Allah says in the Qur'an that the successful ones are those who are removed from Hellfire and placed in Paradise. So before we get to Paradise, we have to be removed from Hellfire.

And in order to bring the balance between what you have heard last week, I ought to mention to you that there is something called Hell, Hellfire. And to talk about it is so terrifying. I couldn't even go through it. But brothers and sisters, let me just relate to you a hadith that might give you an idea of how horrible and how terrifying Hellfire is.

The Hadith of One Moment in Hellfire

The Prophet says in an authentic hadith collected by Imam Muslim:

That a man from the people of Hellfire, who happened to be in this life, who lived in this life the most luxurious lifestyle ever, the most glamorous lifestyle, who had access to everything, that person will be brought on the

Day of Judgment. And he will be dipped in Hellfire for a moment.

Sahih Muslim

And then he will be pulled out. And Allah, the Almighty Himself will ask him: Have you seen any blessings? Have you seen? Do you remember anything good ever happening to you?

And he will say, nay. And he will swear by the glory of Allah that he had never seen any good in his life. That one moment in Hellfire will wipe out all the good memories and all the fun that he had in this life. One moment. You can imagine.

The People of Hellfire Will Beg

The people of Hellfire will beg Allah. And they will beg the dwellers of Paradise for some water, for some mercy, for some break to catch their breath. And they won't be given that.

Why? Those who did not care about things that Allah made prohibited in this life, it will be said to them:

إِنَّ اللَّهَ حَرَّمَهُمَا عَلَى الْكَافِرِينَ

The water and all these blessings that we have in this life that we're not even being charged for it, Allah will declare them to be prohibited on the dwellers of Hellfire.

Why am I saying this? Because we need to balance. We need to bring the balance. We need to balance this hope and sometimes this false sense of security that we may have with some fear, because fear is good brothers and sisters.

The Station of Fear (Al-Khawf)

Fear, or what was known as الخوف (Al-Khawf), is one of the greatest stations on the road to Paradise. And the scholars of the past talked about it. There is a positive type of fear that every believer has to have in his heart, and her heart. And that's what we are talking about brothers and sisters.

Allah says in the Qur'an, chapter 3, verse 175:

فَلَا تَخَافُوهُمْ وَخَافُونِ إِن كُنتُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ

So fear them not, but fear Me if you are believers.

Brothers, please move forward filling all the gaps and do not block the entrance. And Allah the Almighty says in Surah Al-Baqarah, chapter 2, verse 40:

وَإِيَّايَ فَارْهَبُونِ

And fear none but Me.

So Allah is asking us to fear Him. And we ought to fear Allah.

Those Who Fear Allah Race in Good Deeds

Verily, Allah compliments a special group of people and He praises them. Verily those who live in awe, for fear of their Lord, it is these who race for the good deeds and they are foremost in them.

So this is the point. A fear that will trigger this desire of wanting to do good, so you are protected from that which you fear.

The Higher Station: Khashiyah

There is a different type of fear that the scholars mentioned. And this is even a higher level and a higher station and it's called خشية (Khashiyah). And it's more specific than khawf.

For khashiyah is a quality that is particular of the people of knowledge. It comes with knowledge and that's why Allah in chapter 35, verse 28, said:

إِنَّمَا يَخْشَى اللَّهَ مِنْ عِبَادِهِ الْعُلَمَاءُ

It is only those who have knowledge among His slaves that fear Allah, that have khashiyah of Allah.

And that's why the Prophet, peace be upon him, because khashiyah is associated with knowledge. The Prophet ﷺ said: Indeed, I have the most piety of Allah and I have the greatest khashiyah from Him.

And before he made that statement, he said:

إِنِّي لَأَعْلَمُكُم بِاللَّهِ

Sahih al-Bukhari

I'm the most knowledgeable of Allah than any one of you.

So if you get to know Allah and understand His attributes, that will trigger some fear in your hearts. خوف may be movement and a reaction in the heart, where khashiyah actually causes action and it brings some tranquility. And every one of us needs it.

The scholars of the past warned their followers and their students, and they said: If a heart lacks fear, it will be ruined.

Brothers and sisters, we ask Allah to make us among those who fear Him.

First Khutbah Closing

I say this and I ask Allah to make us among those who listen and follow the best of what they listen to. I say this

and I ask Allah to make us among those who fear Him.

Second Khutbah: Fear Leads to Running to Allah

Virtue is the light of the heart. With it one could tell good from bad. Virtue from vice.

Everyone who fears, and here is the catch, everyone who fears something or someone will have to run away from it. Except Allah. For if you fear Allah, the only choice and the only option that you have is to run to Him.

And that's why Allah, the Almighty said in the Qur'an:

فَفِرُّوا إِلَى اللَّهِ

Flee to Allah.

For no one can flee away from Allah or escape. So the only option, the only resort, the only choice that you have is to go back to Allah and to run to Him.

Balancing Fear and Hope

Brothers and sisters, the fear that we're talking about here is the fear that should cause you to work with diligence. And know that fear has to be balanced with some hope. Fear has to be balanced with some hope. This is very important.

The scholars talked about how one should have, like Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) is reported to have said, that the commendable khawf or fear of Allah is that which restrains you from the prohibition of Allah. But at the same time, رجاء (raja) or hope complements it.

And one has to balance it. One has to balance the two. You don't want to have too much fear because you're going to fall into a state of despair. But also having too much hope will give you a false sense of security.

And this is what you ought to fear the most. At least if you fear Allah more in this life, you might have a chance to be secure and you might have a chance to be safe in the hereafter.

But what happens to those people who have too much sense, this false sense of security, and they have wishful thinking, they will come on the Day of Judgment and actually they are setting themselves up to the greatest disappointment of their life. And this is what used to terrify the scholars of the past.

The Balance of Fear, Hope, and Love

So, should we have more fear or should we have more hope? Abu Sulayman said: The heart ought to have more khawf. When raja dominates, it ruins it.

While others, they said: The best state is to have some amount of khawf and raja in a balanced way, and have more love. For love is the boat, and raja or hope is the leader, and khawf or fear is the driver. And Allah is the one that will help us reach our goals and reach our destinations.

Treating Every Opportunity as Your Last

Brothers and sisters, this life is full of opportunities. And opportunities sometimes are not repeated. So here is the message that I want you to go home with:

Anytime you are presented with any opportunity, think of it as your last and the only opportunity that you have. Or think of it as the one opportunity, the one deed that will get you to paradise, and protect you from the wrath of Allah.

One of my teachers once said to me: Listen, treat every opportunity as if it is the one. Because you never know which of your deeds are accepted.

So every opportunity, no matter how little it may be. And he gave me the example of a man who removed a branch of a tree that was on the road to protect people, an act of courtesy. And Allah, because of that one little deed, and because he was so sincere, and because it was so subtle, and he did it purely for the sake of Allah, not to show off, nothing, none of that.

It was accepted, and that's what got him to earn the mercy of Allah. And Allah forgave his sins because of that little deed. So he said, treat every little opportunity, no matter how little it may be, as if it is the chance that you have to make it to paradise.

And people who fear Allah, and fear the punishment of the grave, and fear the punishment of the hereafter, and fear hellfire, that's how they treat every opportunity.

Call to Action: Protecting Our Youth

Brothers and sisters, I've talked in the past about guarding ourselves, and protecting ourselves and our children from hellfire. And that doesn't happen with us making wishes. We have to work hard at it.

We have youth program every weekend, and every Friday night we have a youth program here in the masjid, and we are not seeing any more growth. And subhanallah, yesterday it came to my knowledge, some horrible stories of how kids are suffering, people whose parents think that, oh, they're doing well. They are suffering.

And we'll talk about this next week. This will be the topic of next week.

Seize the Opportunity

We have to repeat it and we have to talk about it. And this time, as opposed to what I did last time, I'm going to let you know, and I'm going to share those stories with you, because you have to know. And I have to bring it to the floor.

We have to do something about it. Otherwise, those children that we are counting on to pray for us, after we die, they are not going to be praying for us. They may be cursing us.

So we have to work hard. Until then, brothers and sisters, we have the Friday night program. We have an amazing youth coordinator here with us. We have an awesome group of people who are working with the youth. Bring your children and come yourself and benefit.

Tonight we have an amazing speaker, who is affiliated with the local mass chapter. Brother Muhammad Nasir was giving a speech about leadership of Islam. Come to it, attend it. This is for the adults. And then for the youth, we have a program. Come and join us.

In addition to that, brothers and sisters, we have an opportunity, and maybe a last call, for you to free this message from youth. And I'll talk to you about that after the salah.

Seize the opportunity. Seize the moment. You never know, this could be it. And the best of deeds and actions is that which is done when the person feels that softness in the heart. Do it for the sake of Allah.

I ask Allah to accept your deeds. And to bless your children and your families and protect you.

Sending Blessings Upon the Prophet

Indeed, Allah confers blessing upon the Prophet, and His angels [ask Him to do so]. O you who have believed, ask [Allah to confer] blessing upon him and ask [Allah to grant him] peace.

That will bring some peace and that will bring some tranquility to your hearts. So we ask Allah to bless His Messenger Muhammad

O Allah, send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You sent prayers upon Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim. Verily, You are Praiseworthy and Glorious. O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You sent blessings upon Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim. Verily, You are Praiseworthy and Glorious.

Closing Remarks: Open House Announcement

And I encourage you, this is not really meant for Muslims, but it's meant for non-Muslims. We have an open house next Sunday. Not this Sunday, but the following Sunday, the 19th of August.

And everybody needs it. But there are some people, I know that each and every single one of us has friends, colleagues, co-workers that might have some interest in knowing about Islam, might have some questions. Hand them this postcard.

You never know. You never know. So we have it, not this Sunday, the following Sunday, from 12, from noon until 5 o'clock. We have an open house with plenty of information and plenty of people to provide guidance and to answer questions.

Do not forget the title of this open house is: What is the purpose of life?

I say this and I ask Allah to reward you for any attempt that you make to provide or to facilitate guidance to people.

Final Reflection: The Ways to Inherit Fear of Allah

And know that there are ways and means by which the fear of Allah is inherited:

First: The glory of Allah and glorification of Him, and the knowledge of the self-deniality of the self, and its vanity.

Second: The fear of shortcomings in obedience, and shortcomings in disobedience.

Third: The visit of the sick, or the visit of the sick and the injured, as well as the visit of the grave. These things bring fear to man, and make him think.

Fourth: To remember that Allah is severe in punishment, and that when He took the wrongdoer, He did not leave him. And to think about the fate of the wrongdoers, and their fate, and their state.

Fifth: To remember death and all that is in it. That is why it is said, remember this one who is for himself.

Sixth: The observation of Allah and His watch. To know that Allah is looking at you, and that Allah is watching you, in every small and big thing.

Seventh: To remember the end, and that you are afraid that you will end up with a bad ending.

Eighth: To reflect upon the verses of the Qur'an, and all the warnings in them. Like those verses that were recited to you before the prayer, or before the sermon. Great and severe verses. Some of these verses, O brothers, we hear them, and we ask for them because of the sound, or something like that. And we do not know that from these verses, what struck the most severe men, when they reflected upon them.

Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by the mosque, and his father was reciting in the prayer, and when he was struck by a nail, that day was a difficult day for the disbelievers, it was not easy, so he fell down on his back, and people visited him, and his family, for a whole month.

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and he is the owner of the praised station, and he is the owner of the great intercession, and he is the one who was forgiven, what came before him from his father, and what came later. And he said: If you knew what I know, you would have laughed a little, and you would have cried a lot.

So reflect upon the verses of the Qur'an, O brothers, so that you can wake us up from our heedlessness, and so that this fear is born within us.

Ninth: To keep the obligations, and to get more of the supplies, and to keep the remembrance. If a person keeps the obedience, and keeps the remembrance, fear is born within him, because he fears that the fruits of his deeds will go to waste.

Tenth: O brothers, and we should be careful about this, is the gathering of the righteous, and listening to their advices, and remembering the stories of the people of faith, and the people of fear, from the predecessors of this nation.

All of these things, one of them is to make the hearts warm, and the other is to give birth to fear in a person.

And as we said, the fear, whoever fears in this world, will be safe on the Day of Resurrection.

And whoever does not fear Allah in this world, then there will come a day in which Allah will not be able to forgive the wrongdoers, on the Day of Resurrection. And they will have no blame, and they will have no sin.

O servants of Allah, indeed Allah orders justice and good conduct and giving to relatives and forbids immorality and bad conduct and oppression. He admonishes you that perhaps you will be reminded.

So remember Allah the Great and He will remember you, and thank Him for His blessings and He will increase you. And the remembrance of Allah is greater, and Allah knows what you do.

And establish the prayer.

End of Khutbah
