Details of the Seerah - Kamal el-Mekki

Opening

أَمَّا بَعْدُ - wa salatun wa salamun 'ala rasulihil amin wa 'ala alihi wa sahbihi ajma'in. amma ba'd)

So the lecture is exactly inshaAllah what the title says, the details of the seerah.

Introduction: Two Ways to Approach the Seerah

And what we want to say is that there are two ways to look at the seerah. There is the story and you can appreciate it just for being a story. So you laugh when something is funny, you cry when something is sad, you feel anxiety when there is a troubled situation.

And this is just on a story telling level how we can appreciate the seerah. And there is nothing wrong with that. But what we are trying to say is that the seerah is so great that you can actually look at it at a deeper level.

And every time you look at it at a deeper level you appreciate it more. You appreciate the genius of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallAllahu 'alayhi wa sallam) more. You appreciate his planning.

You appreciate his manners. You appreciate everything that he went through. And all it takes is looking at it in detail.

And what we are trying to do today inshaAllah and of course everyone has read or taken a class or course on the seerah of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallAllahu 'alayhi wa sallam). We want to take the stories that we all know. Not new stories that nobody heard. I don't know where you can get new stories.

Everything is known right. So we want to take the stories that we all know and focus on one aspect and inshaAllah hopefully all of us will see how the stories changes tremendously just because now we focus on the details. So that means you can read it on the surface level if we can say just a story.

Or if you look at it in more detail you start to appreciate it a lot more. And the seerah of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallAllahu 'alayhi wa sallam) is not like the biography of any other human being on earth. Any other human being on the planet you read their biography once okay it was interesting.

You read it again twice written by someone else okay. Three times you're like okay enough khalas I heard I remember this part okay I heard it. But the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallAllahu 'alayhi wa sallam) his seerah is not like that.

You can keep looking at it again and again and again. And coming up with new analysis and new analysis and more analysis. And a story you heard your whole life suddenly you realize you know something I

never realized this part of the story just by now focusing on one aspect of the incident it has a totally different meaning or a new meaning to me.

And that's what we're going to try to accomplish inshaAllah. I want to start by the simplest or most famous of the stories and showing how when you look at it in more detail it changes. Maybe not drastically but still significantly.

Example 1: The First Revelation in the Cave of Hira

This is a story of when Jibreel (عليه السلام - alayhis salam) came to the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallAllahu 'alayhi wa sallam) when he was in the cave of Hira. And as we all know the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallAllahu 'alayhi wa sallam) and in that period of his life he started to like to be alone at tahannuth when he would start to be alone and meditating just contemplating alone in the cave. Khadijah (رضي الله عنها - radiAllahu anha) being the very supportive wife that she was she would allow him and she would not complain.

Spend time with us and come here and the children and she knew that he needed to do something so she allowed him that. And she also would send him food with the servants but from her wisdom she would tell the servants leave the food at the mouth of the door. Don't go inside and give him the food.

Why? Because he left town looking for peace and quiet. So when you come in now I brought you rice, I brought you chinchaloo, I brought you. You start to saying I got you this, I got you that, I got you.

Okay then now there is no and then you tell me in the news, oh guess what and so and so divorced his wife and so and so's donkey gave birth. Okay I left town because I don't want this destruction. Now you're bringing me the destruction to the cave.

So she would tell them leave the food at the mouth of the cave and go away. Many scholars believe that the night when Jibreel (عليه السلام - alayhis salam) came and approached the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallAllahu 'alayhi wa sallam) that this was on the 27th of Ramadan. Many scholars believe it was possibly on the 27th of Ramadan.

Either way let's consider that for 27 days the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallAllahu 'alayhi wa sallam) is sitting alone in this cave and if you've ever visited you know remote areas like that and or caves or desert kind of geography land you'll see how quiet it is. So you can imagine now for 27 days it's absolutely quiet. He hears no noise and the cities back then also didn't have cars and engines and machines.

So the city wasn't loud either. So it's very very quiet and for 27 days the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallAllahu 'alayhi wa sallam) is sitting in this absolute quiet and he never heard anyone coming up to the cave because if someone is walking up you would hear footsteps. You would hear little rocks falling but he never heard any noise.

He never heard anyone coming and 27 days of not speaking to any human being suddenly he hears a man from inside the cave in the darkness saying, (اقرأ - Iqra). Read or recite whichever way you want to read it. Read or recite.

Now how would you react? A lot of times if you want to see, if you want to see that the story is amazing just think how would you react? Men how would we react? You're sitting in quiet for 27 days suddenly you hear a man inside and you never heard him coming up the mountain. You never heard him coming up the cave. What would you do? First thing you get aggressive when you get scared.

Who are you? How long have you been here? Why were you spying on me? How did you get up here? Why didn't I hear you? How long were you spying on me? All you have 100 questions to ask this person true or false. You have so many questions to ask him. But the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallAllahu 'alayhi wa sallam) what was so amazing about him is that his akhlaq, his manners were so high and so superb that his first reaction is good manners.

The rest of humanity sometimes you're in a bad situation your first reaction might be bad manners or even a frown and then you remember to calm yourself down. But the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallAllahu 'alayhi wa sallam) his manners were so excellent so superb that his first reaction was good manners not bad manners. First reaction good manners.

So a man tells him (اقرأ - Iqra) recite or read and his question is (ما أقرأ - ma aqra) what should I recite? Can you imagine that answer? We all know this now right? But when you think about it it's really incredible that after all this and he's startled and scared and he says what should I recite? And then of course Jibreel (عليه السلام - alayhis salam) squeezes him really tight and then he lets him go and he says recite. Then again he says what should I recite?

Then the third time and then he tells him then he leaves. And until he left the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallAllahu 'alayhi wa sallam) never ever said by the way who are you? How did you get here? Who sent you? Nothing.

It's really amazing isn't it? Really really amazing. So just this detail of saying look the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallAllahu 'alayhi wa sallam) never asked him any questions. That detail just changes the story so much now.

You see the excellent manners of this man (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallAllahu 'alayhi wa sallam). Now even this story that we said we said if you skip don't skip any of the details and when you not we don't skip the details you start to realize some some lessons and benefits. But let me ask you this you know that Jibreel (عليه السلام - alayhis salam) he when he squeezed the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallAllahu 'alayhi wa sallam) hard and the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallAllahu 'alayhi wa sallam) was a strong man and big and good structure he squeezed him really hard the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallAllahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said (حتى بلغ مني الجهد - hatta balagha minnil juhd) as if I almost saw death. Like here's the question why did Jibreel (عليه السلام - alayhis salam) squeeze the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallAllahu 'alayhi wa sallam) so hard

(Reference: Sahih Bukhari 3)

You know something? One time I heard this speaker he was saying you know how Islam started? He said Islam started with a hug.

When Jibreel (عليه السلام - alayhis salam) hugged the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallAllahu 'alayhi wa sallam) it wasn't a hug it was a very hard squeeze. Okay take a guess why do you think he squeezed him so hard? Now we're thinking now we try

to contemplate together on possible wisdoms. What is the possible wisdom behind Jibreel (عليه السلام - alayhis salam) squeezing him very hard versus just giving him a small one like this? Why so hard? What do you think? It's got to be wisdom just for no reason I'm not sure who's in charge.

How about this? What if I'm saying this is a possible wisdom yeah? Nothing for sure this is why. But if you stay in a cave for 27 days you know you take a nap, you wake up, you sleep again, you sit up, you contemplate, you meditate, you start to get drowsy, you have dreams right? You have one dream, you have another dream, you have nightmares, you have right? And so if something like this happens to you and then you just hear a voice and it says read and it's black you can't see anything. Then again it says recite, then again it says recite and then he leaves.

You look turn on the candle there's nothing nobody in there. After tomorrow morning what might you think happened? Dream, I was dreaming. It's been dark, I didn't see anything and I've always been sitting here for a long for a month.

Sometimes I dream, sometimes I wake up, sometimes I'm half asleep, I see things. So maybe I'm not sure if that happened to me or not but when you're squeezed so hard will you think say in the morning was that a dream? No I was sure it wasn't a dream. It's just like how we say in English now when someone says pinch me yeah? In English they always say pinch me to make sure I'm not dreaming right? Am I dreaming? Pinch me.

So now when you're squeezed so hard there's no room for doubt was it a dream or not. That's one of the possible wisdoms but the point is that you focus on the details and the details change the story or the details add another meaning to the story. And the other thing we said put yourself in that in the position, put yourself in the story and then you start to see is this normal or not.

Example 2: The Incident of Ifk and Aisha's Sleep

I'll give you an example of putting yourself in that position. We all have heard the story of the ifk, the incident of the ifk, the accusation against Aisha (رضي الله عنها - radiAllahu anha) yeah? And we've read the hadith of the ifk when Aisha (رضي الله عنها - radiAllahu anha) herself is telling this story. So you probably remember the part when she noticed the necklace was missing from her.

She says I touched my chest and found that a necklace made from zafar beads was missing. So she says I went back looking for it and my search delayed me and the army came and they left in the meantime. The men thought they were in she was in the hawdaj which is the box they put on top of the camel.

(Reference: Sahih Bukhari 4141)

They thought she was inside and she was a small girl and they're big strong men they put it they thought she was inside and they left. So she came back and from her wisdom she waited where they would probably look for her yeah? Sometimes maybe you're traveling around town with a group maybe tourists

something like that and you lose one person. They should wait at the last place where you were all together but no he starts looking for you around town.

So you're looking for him he's looking for you it's never going to work. So she's waiting she stays there. Then she says sleep overtook her and she slept.

Find anything strange? Yeah put yourself in the story now and you'll see that it's very strange that she slept true or false. Imagine you're in the desert sisters imagine you're in the desert and you don't have a gun or a sword or anything you don't have a tent or any place to stay just open desert and it's pitch black and what do we have in the desert? We have scorpions we have snakes we have hyenas you know hyenas yeah? We have jackals we have all kinds of horrible horrible wicked beasts and you're in this desert with no protection no shelter nothing. Would you fall asleep? Forget the sisters brothers would you fall asleep? No who's gonna be like oh this is I'll just wait here.

No way all day like this all night you hear something Bismillah what was that? Yeah? Be very worried but Aisha (رضي الله عنها - radiAllahu anha) slept so what does that mean? The scholars say anytime someone sleeps in a difficult situation it's proof of assistance from Allah (عز وجل - azza wa jal) and that's why Allah mentions the sleep that overtook the believers before the battle of Badr you're over you're you're outnumbered three to one and you didn't you didn't bring strong weapons or anything like that and they had full weapons and and armor and everything huge army three times as many as you are and then Muslims still falling asleep.

إِذْ يُغَشِّيكُمُ ٱلنُّعَاسَ أَمَنَةًۭ مِّنْهُ

"[when He overwhelmed you with drowsiness [giving] security from Him]"

This is a situation where you don't sleep when people worry they don't sleep so whenever you see sleep in a difficult situation it's evidence that there was assistance from Allah (سبحانه وتعالى - subhanahu wa ta'ala). So now this just in these examples stories that we know but take another look and little detailed look and you start to see that the story changes a whole lot.

Example 3: The Wisdom of Choosing Al-Arqam's House

So let's take another incident or something that we know very well most of us know that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallAllahu 'alayhi wa sallam) he taught in the house of Al-Arqam ibn Abi Al-Arqam right when the dawah was in secret in the Meccan era the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallAllahu 'alayhi wa sallam) taught in the house of Al-Arqam ibn Abi Al- Arqam everyone know this piece of information correct okay what are some of the wisdoms why did he choose the house of Al-Arqam ibn Abi Al-Arqam why not the house of Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنه - radiAllahu anhu) his best friend a nobleman an older man why not in the house of Abu Bakr who wants to share one of the wisdoms why it was in the house of Al-Arqam ibn Abi Al-Arqam anyone fantastic excellent very good anything else I'll repeat it excellent very good anything else go ahead okay these are fantastic sheikh saying some some very good points now first of all Al-Arqam ibn Abi Al-Arqam he was a 16 year old young man who would expect that this great religion and all these you know an older man and all the secret meeting will be in the house of a young man and for the Quraish you know they looked at you

The House of Al-Arqam

know the higher ranking people the nor the the nobleman the older people you would never expect that the lesson the Muslim classes in secret will be in the house of a young man who is 16 years old that's the first thing very unlikely the second thing is that Al-Arqam ibn Abi Al-Arqam he was a Muslim in secret no one knew it was not public that he was a Muslim so nobody had any idea that he was Muslim so even less expected that it would be in the house of a non Muslim nobody knew that Al-Arqam ibn Abi Al-Arqam was a Muslim that's another fantastic point a third point as a sheikh mentioned is that he was he would his house was situated near As-Safa and Al-Marwah where there's a lot of traffic a lot of foot traffic there so if a Muslim comes into a house or leaves a house and there's many people coming and going do you think people will notice it no imagine the house of Al-Arqam ibn Abi Al-Arqam was in the middle of an open prairie an open field it's very big open field from all sides and just one house in the middle and now you're trying to have classes in secret there so you see a Muslim coming he goes in the house two minutes later another Muslim is coming from the other direction he goes in the house three minutes later another Muslim leaves you think after a few minutes people understand what's happening of course but now it's in an area where there's a lot of foot traffic so no one's gonna notice anything so that's what's so intelligent about choosing this it wasn't just a Bismillah in the house of Al-Arqam no it's planning involved the other great point is that Al-Arqam ibn Abi Al-Arqam was from the tribe of Banu Makhzum and the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) is from Banu Hashim and what is known about Banu Makhzum and Banu Hashim they were enemies of enemies but they were in severe competition with each other true they had known competition between the two to the point where if you remember the quote from from Abu Jahl when he said we we were I mean we were competing with Banu Hashim until we got neck became neck and neck like two racehorses and they fed we fed they they they gave drink we gave drink and then until we came neck and neck suddenly they said from amongst us is a Prophet so how can we ever match that this is Abu Jahl explaining why he's not gonna follow the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) because we're competing with these two people and we're almost together suddenly they said we have a Prophet from amongst us how we're gonna beat that it's impossible so there was known if I can use the term animosity or some kind of challenge between Banu Makhzum and Banu Hashim who would expect that the Prophet from Banu Hashim would be teaching in the middle of the homes of Banu Makhzum anybody no one would expect that and that's the brilliance of choosing the house of Al-Arqam Ibn Abi Al-Arqam and now you realize how this story will look different to you the next time you're hearing this seerah or in a Jum'ah khutbah someone's the Imam would say and the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) was teaching in the house of Al-Arqam Ibn Abi Al-Arqam most people say yes yes we know that but you will say I don't know why four wisdom is behind very very intelligent reasons why yeah

Example 4: The Prophet's Night Journey and the Buraq

A lot of things like for example the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) when he went to Baitul Maqdis so he rode on this animal known as the Buraq and the Buraq came with Jibreel (عليه السلام) from the heavens right and when the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) came to ride the animal it moved a little bit so Jibreel (عليه السلام) spoke to it he said why are you doing that he tells that no one has ever ridden you better than him and the animal showed that was nervous because of that and the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) rode it all the way to Baitul Maqdis when he got to Baitul Maqdis the hadith mentions that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) then tied the Buraq in the post in the post of before entering the Masjid now why so what do you think and the hadith mentioned specifically that he tied the Buraq to the post and then he went inside the Masjid so why would he tie this animal it's not like a worldly animal that's gonna go around to eat something and smell around the Buraq so let me see how this earth is huh let me see what they have to eat it speaks language and it understands language it understands who is riding it it understands the importance of this journey so you know it's not gonna go anywhere and still the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) tied it so who wants to take a guess there's no wrong answer here we're trying to figure out why what are possible wisdoms who wants to take a guess here I know Malaysians are very well-mannered people but don't go ahead put your hand up what do you think why would he tie it what would be the reason there's some easy guesses if you say those you can say those as well to make it seem like a normal animal possibly to maybe to teach us something what could we learn if he ties the animal some people said maybe he's trying to teach us tawakkul that you have to actually you have to do the action and if you say inshallah I'll do the action and then I'll put my tawakkul on some people said that it's possible you know we're not saying for sure but we're saying it's a possibility but what's interesting about the narration when it says the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) tied the Buraq it says he tied the Buraq to the post where all the prophets tied their riding animals now do you see a possible wisdom he tied it where all the prophets tied their riding animals all the prophets of Allah they visited this blessed place and all of them came on normal worldly animals they came on normal camels or horses or mules or what-have-you and these were animals that had to be tied because they could go somewhere else even though the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) came with an animal that understood and would not go anywhere the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) still tied it to the post and that could be an indication it could be saying because the hadith says where all the prophets tied their animals so it's like saying these are my brothers and I'm a prophet like them and I do what they do even though they tied worldly animals and I'm tying an animal from the heavens I was I'm riding an animal from the heavens I will still do what they did because this is the way of the prophets and these are my brothers and this is and part of the journey is that he visited a masjid that according to the scholars all the prophets visited as well so he's doing something that all the prophets did

(Sahih Muslim 162)

The point is that you don't overlook any of the details sometimes in in normal life or in someone else's biography you might go into details and there's no wisdom behind the details and someone did something this way and then we sit years later why do you think he did it this way and then we realize that it was the only choice he just just by accident he did it that way oh really I thought there's some wisdom involved with the Prophet there are no accidents there's always some wisdom so that's why it's good training to always to teach ourselves to look at it in detail and try to figure out okay why did the Prophet do it this way and why did that happen why did he say this here and he didn't say it there and once you do that you start to appreciate as we said the seerah on a deeper level beyond just the storytelling aspect.

Example 5: The Wisdom Behind Prophets Being Shepherds

Okay so the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) let's try to get some interaction now Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) he was a shepherd before becoming a prophet and he said in a hadith (ما من نبي إلا وقد رعى الغنم) there has not been a prophet except that he was a shepherd at some point (رعى الغنم) he shepherded you know if he was a shepherd of goats or sheep or something like that what is the the wisdom behind that why did Allah choose this profession for all his prophets why not something else but that means it has to be a wisdom if there is no value to being a shepherd then one would be a shepherd the other would be a carpenter the other would be something else a merchant you know but Allah chose this profession for the prophets (ما من نبي إلا وقد رعى الغنم) so what now you think to yourself now what are some of the benefits you can think of of being a shepherd how does that prepare you for becoming a prophet what do you think for sure patience yeah teaches you patience you sit all day and you watch these goats or sheep they eat on this side then they all go on this side and eat again and they move over here and eat they don't do anything else and if you're watching a group of dogs for example they play and they run and they come to you sheep just for hours just eating chewing and when they're finished eating then they sit and they chew the cud again all over again so there's nothing to do so it teaches you to be patient for sure if you're a shepherd and you're not patient get another job yeah it's not gonna work huh and you can't bring game boy in your life telephone hey what's happened I'm bored there sheep are eating you can't talk to anybody so thank you very much excellent so that was patience anything else you learn from being a shepherd responsibility right who said that yeah fantastic responsibility you learn to be responsible and you learn to keep an eye out you're watching over this flock so it's good for a prophet to learn this because you learn to watch over a flock watch over a group and this is responsibility because these aren't yours you're that you're a shepherd you're watching them for someone else so this is not your your property these are not your livestock yet so you have to watch carefully and you're responsible and you have to come back and answer for the numbers very good anything else.

(Sahih Bukhari 2262)

You know something let me tell you something in advance but one of the books that has the most wisdoms for why the prophet was a shepherd mentioned seven that's the one of the most I've ever seen in class we mentioned about 23 things because everyone is thinking from a different angle and you might think of something that I never considered so there are many many so we have two right now we have 21 more yeah someone was about to say something learning experience leaning oh leading I said very good leading I told you something very good very good point so the the psychologist when they compare human beings what do they compare humans to that's a sheep yeah so it what does it mean it means that uh human beings they follow a leader and how do sheep follow a leader if they say there's a group of sheep eating like this and one of them goes here to eat all the more follow if one goes here to eat all the more follow that and you usually find them eating together you don't find like one sheep over there one sheep over there one sheep at the top of the mountain they're always together and they follow whatever one moves so the prophet is getting training with an animal that also behaves the same way the humans behave so this is training for leadership as well another point related to responsibility is that as a shepherd you also learn that you can lose some of your your flock true sometimes the shepherd comes on well I'm sorry the sheep the wolf came in and took the it happens right so you start to to get used to the idea of losing some of your your flock and the prophet it's true some of the flock would would get lost and it happened during his life by the way just from the impact of being a shepherd many times the prophet would give an analogy using sheep you remember that shows you that there was some impact from being a shepherd on his life later on that when he would use an analogy he would use sheep for example the hadith of the wolf will only eat from the sheep that strays away from the flock this is a shepherd experience right also the hadith of the man who will graze his his herd right next to the land of another man so they might eat from his grass he's using this in analogies which shows you how much he learned from it excellent anything else sisters can sisters speak in malaysia i'm just joking by the way uh what do you think what else do you think when the sheep scatter the shepherd unites them and gathers them excellent beautiful sheikh Walid is saying that when the sheep scatter the shepherd unites them and brings them back together he doesn't allow them and keep them scattered they're all just watch the different groups no he brings them back and unifies them that's actually a wonderful point i've never heard that one before sometimes you get that point you never heard before yeah you do this many times okay i heard that one excellent anything else how about why sheep why not and there has not been a prophet except he was a camel herder so those of you who are laughing you know something about camels right what's the difference between being a shepherd dealing with sheep goats and dealing with camels if you ever it's weak and gentle and they listen to you and how do you move sheep you speak gently i don't know how you say but whatever the language is is very calm you just you bring them from here to there how do you move camels it's a different situation right and camels bite and spit huh and all these things and to move them you have to hit and you like push it so now imagine a prophet who used to deal with camels first you have to ask him a question very different right so there's just just the wisdom of that animal versus any other animal fantastic it brings you can you contemplate and get closer to allah closer to nature as a shepherd yeah because nature gets you to think about allah or even if you don't know allah you start to contemplate about the creation and the beauty and you just sit in there in this open sky in front of you you start to contemplate and think about this we always say nature gets you to think about allah yeah and and that is a profession as a shepherd you get to think and contemplate about allah versus if you were and for example when you're stuck in traffic yeah when you're stuck in traffic you don't say mashallah how beautiful look at all the lights huh you just want to get home alas right i said mashallah look at all the motorcycles and all the people and this beautiful buffalo is blocking the traffic how wonderful i can move this buffalo i'll go right so now this is again something that gets you to think and get closer to allah anything else you want to add for shepherd it's a long list but we don't spend all night on just on being a shepherd anything else jameel beautiful yes a lot of times people say yeah the the the sheep they're short they're small so they see things from a different viewpoint from different viewpoint and the prophet sees things that they can't see you from an angle that they can't see and this is exactly how he was with his ummah he can see things from an angle or allah will allow him also to be able to see things that his ummah is not able to see or to know meaning see in the future figuratively or see actuality see things that they can't see so he can look at it from a different vantage point and based on this vantage point he can give the guidance and have them avoid the harm based on that and so on and so forth so you're getting the idea so it's not just that we take it for granted yes every prophet was a shepherd you stop and say why just shepherd and if some of them were shepherds oh there's no big deal but allah made sure all of them were shepherds so that means there's something special about being a shepherd fantastic okay.

Example 6: The Strategic Choice of Musab ibn Umair

Uh let's let's put another point uh for example the prophet when he sent he wanted to send someone to uh give dawah in medina to prepare the city to prepare the land to receive the muslims when they make their hijrah and who does he send he sends musab ibn umair (رضي الله عنه) musab ibn umair and i personally would send abu bakr and i would have abu bakr do everything why because he's the greatest after the prophets everything allah if i need water abu bakr because he's the greatest after the prophets in this ummah so i would send abu bakr to medina but the prophet didn't send abu bakr he sent musab ibn umair so whenever the prophet picks and chooses someone for a task or for a job why him okay he sent usama ibn zayd at the head of an army and in it was supposed to be abu bakr and umar but why usama ibn zayd why not umar he is tough strong man put umar but he chose usama so you stop and say okay why there's got to be wisdom so he sent musab ibn umair why musab ibn umair and there's a number of points but the one we want to focus on is who was musab ibn umair and what did he go through when he became muslim so when he became muslim he used to be known before islam he was like the talk of the town as they say he's always well dressed had the best oil the most expensive oil always smelled good you can smell it from a long distance wearing the you know the best any clothes you know gucci like gucci back then yeah wearing the brand name whatever yeah then when he becomes muslim his mother she starves him and she chains him up in the house and he becomes now he's wearing the worst clothes he's very poor because she has nothing to do with him now he has no access to any of the money in a narration that he entered upon the companions of prophet they look to him and they look down and the tears came to their eyes because of how he used to look before and how he looks now he has nothing now and his only crime is he said allah is my lord so musab ibn umair is someone who had the dunya and he lost it and he's not getting anything he's not getting commission he's not getting salary he lost it and he oh for what for the reward with allah azza wa jal the ansar in medina this is the perfect reminder for them we're sending you someone who lost everything for the sake

Document

of allah he's not getting anything back and you the ansar you're not going to get anything back in this dunya and that's exactly what happened when the prophet salam at the first pledge of al-aqaba when he met with the six men from medina this is exactly what's happening during that time the prophet salam met with a number of tribes he met with a lot of tribes actually so many tribes he's trying to to say you know i i'm the prophet of allah you will protect me i'll come to your city you protect me the same way you protect your your your women and children and you share your wealth with me he spoke to many tribes and many of them refused and some of them almost accepted but they had stipulations and amongst them were banu hanifa the tribe of banu hanifa and the tribe of banu amir and they would say things like okay we'll do this and we'll protect you and defend you the same way we defend our women and our children but we have one condition when you die we take over this issue this affair the becoming the the ones the rulers the leaders with us that's the only thing we'll do everything we'll make you proud and we're strong people but the minute you die we take over and the prophet salam refused refused that's not we're not going to accept conditions like that and this refusal is proof that he was a genuine prophet yes proof that he was a genuine prophet if he's not a real prophet after i die okay do whatever you want fight or have civil wars who cares um when i die sure he can if he's not a real prophet excellent we have a deal i'll move tomorrow yeah but he refused because he was a genuine prophet the ansar were amazing the ansar are incredible incredible people they never said anything like this they never asked for money they never put any stipulations it was very simple they if we support you and if we share our wealth with you and if we protect you and defend you the same way we defend our women and our children what do we get in return what do we get in return that's the only question they asked what do we get in return and the prophet salam doesn't have any money to offer them he can't tell them in the future we'll take spoils we'll give you good share good percentage you know you get a good return on investment he says one word one word yeah and they put their hands out he says (الجنة - al jannah) and they pledged and that's why the ansar are such amazing amazing people all the other groups they had some issues but the ansar they heard the jannah and that was enough and the reminder for them is that the person sent to give dawah in their city in their lands was someone who lost everything because he wants al jannah so that's part of the wisdom of sending musab ibn umair specifically to uh to medina and not anyone else.

Example 7: The Journey to At-Taif - Strategic Analysis

But let's do uh let's let's ask some questions about the journey to at-taif and everyone's heard and knows that the prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) went to at-taif the first question is at-taif is 60 kilometers away from mecca but the prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) walked to at-taif why did he walk when he had riding animals and he had access to riding animals mules and horses and donkeys and camels but he decided to walk for 60 kilometers yeah that's like a 10 10 hour walk because they say the human walks at the speed of six kilometers per hour that's 10 hours walking so why did he walk and not ride that's the

first question the second question is why did he just take zayd ibn haritha with him and he didn't take abu bakr and he didn't take umar and he didn't take hamza and he didn't take a group of people with him he took just zayd ibn haritha and they walked to at-taif when they could have ridden to at-taif that's one or that's two now two questions then the prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) stays in at-taif for a number of days he doesn't stay there just half a day many people think he said they're part of a day and didn't work out he came back he stayed for a number of days and then he on the way back about 30 kilometers is about 30 kilometers from at-taif 30 kilometers which is about five hours of walking after he left at-taif five hours before entering mecca jibreel comes to the prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and with him is the angel of the mountains the angel of the mountains makes him an offer he said he's talking about the hadith doesn't say which city the hadith says the people of the city and the angel tells him if you like i will basically crush them between the two mountains so a lot of times like i said the hadith doesn't specify which city the people of al-qariyah the city and many times you will hear people say the city was at-taif because they dealt with him very badly they they threw stones at him they insulted him they made him bleed so the angel is offering to crush the people of at-taif between the two mountains and some other scholars said no he's not offering to crush the people of at-taif he's offering to crush the people of mecca between the two mountains why because first of all the prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) left at-taif five hours ago that story is finished okay hold on i want to set his details okay why did the prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) choose at-taif you know and that's a question we're talking about stopping and asking every time why did he even choose at-taif because you might well i know he went to at-taif i've known this since i was a small child but why did he go to at-taif when you know why he went to at-taif you start to see the brilliance of the prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) how intelligent he was so why at-taif who wants to share why at-taif many leaders there okay good what else i was sent very good excellent the father is very strong i'm going to elaborate in a minute anything else yeah it's not just like let's just go to at-taif there's planning involved so first at-taif has the tribe of thaqif she's a very strong tribe yeah you remember after the conquering of mecca the muslims tried to conquer thaqif and they weren't able to that's how strong thaqif are so if they accept islam he has a strong backing and strong supporters now that's one the other thing we said that it was a city that was in competition with uh with the quraish it was in competition they had one idol which was the god or the idol of at-taif huh not a lot no okay so they had they had their own goddess and the quraish had the kaaba and most people would go there but they also had their own goddess that people would come and visit as well so there was i mean there was a strong competition but there was some something there and the off the offer of being supporters of the prophet of islam a new religion that will take the carpet from under the meccans would be a very enticing offer for them and they could accept just for the sake of having an advantage over mecca that's another thing another thing is that at-taif was on the way of the trade route of the quraish the quraish had the journeys that they would make in the winter and in the the summer right these journeys so the trade route was on the way to at-taif so if the prophet takes over that city then he would be able to i mean what do you call it he would be able to do some damage to the quraish and stop the caravan and stop the trade so that's another strategic thing about it the other thing

is that at-taif had a great place in the heart of the meccans yeah it wasn't just some city and they considered it a great city what like besides kuala lumpur what's a great city in malaysia however okay no great cities leave the example anyways it was a city that had a place why how do we know that we know that from the quran because the the people of uh the quraish would they wish to say why wasn't this quran revealed why wasn't this quran revealed to a great man from one of the two cities for the two villages what are the two cities mecca and at-taif the taif was great in their hearts so they said the leader this prophet should have been chosen from a great man from mecca or a great man from at-taif why did they say at-taif because they considered at-taif a great city so that's these are the wisdoms behind why the prophet first started heading on foot with zayde bin haritha to that city specifically and not to any other city.

Reference: Quran 43:31 - لولا نزل هذا القرآن على رجل من القريتين عظيم

Then we said he stayed there a number of days it didn't work out on the way back five hours after leaving at-taif he's offered by the angels of the mountains angel of the month to crush them between the two mountains and we said many people will say this is the offer was to crush the people of at-taif and the other group of scholars said no the offer was to crush the people of mecca why first of all he left at-taif five hours ago the story is finished the other thing is that the prophet is worried about entering mecca now why is he worried about entering mecca because if now it goes to answer the first question why did the prophet leave on foot leave with zayde bin haritha the prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) when does he go to at-taif after the the boycott of bani hashim when they were sent out to the ravines and at this time abu talib had passed away khadijah r.a had passed away so he lost two supporters one that the the internal the backup the support khadijah r.a and abu talib who was protecting him and after that everyone started to attack him nobodies would come take stand and put on his head so now he needed to find some other supporter if the meccans find out that he's leaving town to travel somewhere to try to get support against us will you think they will accept huh have a safe journey they would not allow him to go out that's why he didn't take a riding animal so he looked like he's just walking with zayde bin haritha if he took abu bakr and othman and umar and ali and hamza r.a it would look like something is happening and the quresh might come and try to stop them but if it looks like a man is walking with what used to be his adopted son and zayde bin haritha used to be the adopted son of the prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) they used to call him zayde bin muhammad so if it just looks like a man walking with his son who's going to think oh no he's traveling and it doesn't look serious it doesn't look serious the prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) then goes to a taif he makes it safely he stays there a number of days in this period the quresh found out that he's in a taif now they know and now they're very very angry they're very very angry so that's why when the prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is going back to mecca he's worried about the reaction of the meccans not a taif taif is over that story is over he's worried about what the meccans are going to do to him when he enters because now they know he tried to get support somewhere else and another piece of evidence is he said there are two mountains uh surrounding mecca yeah and they have names here in jabal abu qubais and the other one

they're surrounding mecca that's why mecca is a valley valley is between two mountains so he said if you like i will crush them between the two mountains mecca has two mountains around it does the taif have two mountains around it it doesn't there are no two mountains around the taif and they weren't in two mountains one of them went somewhere mountains are mountains they don't go anywhere so that's why some scholars argue no the offer was not for a taif it was for mecca and another evidence is that before going into mecca the prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) knows these people who try to hurt him now they're very angry with him they're going to try to hurt him so what does he do before going into mecca he goes and he gets protection from al mutaib ibn adi who was a non-muslim but the jiwar system was a system the early before islam that they had and even after islam was accepted where you would say so and so is under my jiwar meaning under my protection and whoever touches him he has touched me so al mutaib ibn adi takes his people and take their weapons and they take the prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) in they give him like it's like a procession they go in with him and he makes tawaf around the kaaba and they make with their weapons a display yeah they're going around and then they announce that he is under the protection of al mutaib ibn adi and whoever touches him has touched me then the prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) goes to his home so that's why he was worried about it about returning and that's why the offer was if you like we'll crush the meccans between the two mountains so the whole point of the story of the taif like you look at it and there's so much detail in it.

Reference: Sahih Bukhari 3231

Making Time for Dawah

Another detail that we also didn't mention in the story which is amazing the scholars say notice the prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) had something to do he had work he had a house to take care of khadijah passed away he had three daughters he had a household he had mouths to feed but he made time for dawah and the scholars say the are the people who force time in their schedule for dawah many people think that dua are people who look at their schedule and say i think i see tuesday is free and wednesday i have hours free i'll give dawah in these hours no the dua are people who have children they have family they have work they have bills they have studies and they look at their schedule and the schedule is full and they force time for dawah and they make time for allah azza wa jal and the scholars say the prophet had things to do but he forced time for dawah and he went to a taif and he stayed there for days even he didn't just stay there half an hour and then come back so the dua are people who make time for dawah and not people who just have time for dawah okay.

The Quraish's Counter-Dawah Techniques

Um let's see what uh i think i'll end with uh with the last point very quickly or 20 minutes oh 20 minutes so uh it's interesting that the prophet also the quraish tried many different techniques against him when he tries to speak to people they had many techniques so no one listens to him sometimes he comes to speak to a group of people and uh they would someone would would they would pay for young girls to

stand up and sing so they drown out the voice of the prophet he stands up he wants to recite quran then these servant girls who are paid they get up and they start to sing so that they drown out the voice of the prophet and people start to listen to them other times they would have someone who would go around following the prophet and every time the person would stand up and start to recite or give dawah he would stand up and he would tell stories who is this man the man would get up and tell stories huh another one had it every time the prophet wanted him why was why another man he was very well- traveled man he's been to many cities and seen and knows the stories of many kings so the person starts to give dawah he stands up once upon a time on what this happened one of the kings of yemen he'll tell the story and people will come and sit and listen to him and then when he's done he would say and how is muhammad better than me he tells stories and i tell stories yeah you hear this in the quran many times stories of old stories of old nations nations before muhammad is only telling us stories of old this is that's all this is all the quran is just stories and 17 times occurs in the quran this statement and 70 it's all in response to this man another ibn al-harith who used to tell stories that's another technique.

Reference: The phrase أساطير الأولين stories of the ancients) appears 17 times in the Quran - examples: Quran 6:25, 8:31, 16:24, 23:83, 25:57:68, 46:17, 68:15, 83:13

Another time there was abu jahl abu lahab his uncle abu lahab would follow him and every time when he's speaking to the delegations different tribes different groups from hajj and he goes to speak to them he would come behind him hey don't listen to him he's a liar i know him he's he's my nephew yeah he's where his people he's a liar don't listen to him so one of the the eyewitnesses says i saw he describes the prophet this is a young man for that for that time he would refer to someone like that younger looking and he followed by an older man who was cross-eyed cross-eyed like this and he had two braids and he said wherever the young man stopped and tried to talk to people then the older man would would interrupt him and tell them don't listen to him he's a liar we are his people i'm his uncle we know him don't listen to him he said this was amazing about the narration he says the young man the younger one meaning never once turned around and spoke to the older one never once said do you mind leaving me alone could you please not bother me could you go somewhere else you know i'm not a liar you know that my your gold is with me i'm holding it for you because you know i'm truthful he never defended himself when they would stand up and sing he would never say why do you sing where i where i stand up why do you follow me around the town another is always there he doesn't tell him why are you following me why can't you tell your story over there okay where are you going to tell your next story here okay mine's over there i don't want to see you he never even politely he never says stop this don't do this they called him a liar and he doesn't say look you know i'm keeping all your gold with me right now all your possessions because you know i'm not a liar so why are you calling me a liar and they would warn people there's he's a sorcerer he's a magician and if you listen to him he will bewitch you with his speech and then the people even plug their ears they used a number of like 16 17 techniques against the prophet what is amazing is that you never would find the person telling them could you not do this could you leave me alone could you have better manners why do you think the person never once reacted to them

Closing Remarks by Shaykh Waleed Abdul Hakeem

Okay um there's still uh some time left and uh and we uh i had spoken to uh my brothers here and they agreed that because we have uh our dear shaykh shaykh waleed abdul hakeem he's amongst us and uh they agreed that he will do some and give some closing remarks and some commentary as well and he also agreed that we had the promise earlier that he would do that so with that i'll give the remaining time inshallah for the shaykh alhamdulillah wa salatu was salamu ala rasoolillah um jazakumallah khair for coming and jazakallah khair shaykh kamal for this uh interesting look at the seerah uh subhanallah my brothers and sisters uh both the quran and the seerah of the prophet is something that it's not something that you read and try to reflect on one time and then you feel you have finished it in fact subhanallah as you are living and as you progress through life every time you come back to them you start to see it from a new and fresh point of view like even subhanallah you could for example read or study a course about psychology and then you go back and read the seerah and then you start to see how the prophet used psychology in the seerah and then you go for example you take a course in leadership and then you come back to it and you take sociology and you take subhanallah every branch of humanistic sciences and you go back to it and you start to see it from that angle and subhanallah i've had a chance to um look at a study about leadership skills that was conducted over 25 years around the world in about 78 countries where they asked people about the characteristics of leadership of the

prophet of what people saw these characteristics of leadership in people and they did this study even in malaysia and and so many countries they asked people what are the top 20 characteristics of a leader what do you think it is and then they took the survey they took the number it was more than 20 000 people answering this question around the world and then subhanallah they came up with the master list of about 200 characteristics and then they saw the frequency of those characteristics and they came up again with the top 20 until they saw something interesting that although the top 20 changes from country to country the top five characteristics are almost the same in every country in the world that they did this study and i will refer you to it inshallah maybe perhaps you could read that book and then when you come and read the seerah you'll be able to see examples of the life of specifically in those the number one characteristic that was agreed on universally in all of the world is that the person the prophet actually the the characteristic of the leadership is what that he must be honest and trustworthy what was the nickname of the prophet that's what they called him (الصادق الأمين - alsadiq al'amin) and this is exactly you could have all the other characteristics maybe the leader doesn't have them all or has some of them but this these specifically being honest and trust trustworthy if the person has all the other characteristic but he doesn't have that one would anyone follow him no so that's the importance of it subhanallah when even the prophet when they even didn't know that he was a prophet of Allah yet and then he asked them if i told you what's behind that mountain would you have believed me that that there is some army coming or some horses coming and people coming to think would you have believed me and they said we have never what we have never heard you lie before this and then he said then i am bringing you the news from Allah about that i am warning you about a great adab or a great torture a great harm that is coming the prophet is warning the people about it and then when they heard this what they some of them start to flip on him because what that honesty even though it was the truth it's contradicted with their desire it's contradicted with something that they already wanted you know how sometimes a politician would show certain characteristic and then subhanallah once something happens they start turning their word or slightly or because it's not helping the economic interest of the of the country or something like that we start to see this sometimes people have values but once their own dunya contradicts with the values they put the dunya over the values so this is why it's important that when we have the values and we know our values we stay consistent with these values that's the characteristic we see in the leader the leader who has values these values are consistent they do not change based on the circumstances or based on the economy or based on this of course there is room for flexibility but the values of for example honesty honesty is honesty unless of course your life is threatened for example the prophet gave us a permission that in this case the person may for example say like Ammar ibn Yasin and his family they may say the word of kufr even go out of Islam when their life was threatened but their heart is against that so that's an exception so this is about the values.

(Sahih Bukhari 4770)

Visit to South Korea

Subhanallah just so i know we already have a how much time we have okay so i just wanted to share with you one of the recent trips that the poor slave of Allah went to to south korea south korea subhanallah i was surprised to find out that their population is about 45 million so about 15 million more than malaysia and mashallah there is about 120,000 muslims there considering that there isn't much dawah that's a good number but and about from those 120,000 about 80,000 are immigrant so i i was surprised to find out that there's 30 to 40,000 native muslims in south korea some of them actually have accepted Islam when because some of them have worked in saudi arabia and they they accepted Islam there and then they came back and they started to give dawah to their families that people around them but then i found that that there is native koreans who have been muslim for about over 600 years generation after generation and then i thought subhanallah whoever brought Islam over here and then because it was a total new information i started to go and research about it and i found out subhanallah you know just like malaysia you know this beautiful country mashallah all the muslims we have here the merchants who came and brought Islam over here it actually started also by merchants but also by geographers who were trying to travel to chart the map of the world and learn about it subhanallah so you could read about in that interesting chapter of history but the good thing subhanallah i saw that the brothers there they are doing some good dawah ideas that and this is something that i like that when you travel you see different ideas around the world then perhaps we could bring these beautiful ideas to malaysia then for example i've seen these ideas in malaysia i could take them for example i'm going to canada in about two weeks we could teach them about what people are doing in malaysia and this is alhamdulillah it gives you the feeling of the unity of the muslims around the world when we take the best ideas that everyone has and start to shape them together into something you see and this is what like sheikh kamal was speaking that's what the prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) did for example with the companions like for example who came from outside the arabian peninsula you have suhaib al rumi you have salman al-parisi the persian and subhanallah Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala wrote and decreed that he would have a 20-year journey around the world until he finds the prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) so that one day when the muslims are in trouble in in in the battle of the ditch that he would give them the idea that all this happens subhanallah that they would learn an idea that came from outside and they would use it and Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala because of their belief and then because of this idea that they had victory and this saved many muslims subhanallah so this is something beautiful one of the ideas that i've seen for example over there is you know sometimes for example when when someone wants to learn about Islam whether it's a muslim or non-muslim we often have those pamphlets or books but we have them inside the masjid and someone has to come for example maybe they don't know about salah time and then they have to knock and no one answers or they have to call and no one answers but what they did is around the masjid there is booths outside on the main street that has pamphlets about dawah so people when they are passing by in the street in the masjid even if the masjid is closed or anything they could still get the information about Islam and then it's written in like english and korean and then there is a phone number that they could call and subhanallah that's an idea that i got from the muslims there and then there was another idea from the non-muslim koreans that i said subhanallah i wish we could work

on something like that you know when you go to for example korea many people there don't speak english so you will find that or most people will find that when you go to a country that doesn't speak your language it will be very difficult to communicate and go around and ask but then subhanallah as i as i arrived in the airport there was a card that had a phone number on it and this number it's a free number you could dial from any phone and you will find over 400 volunteers actually 4 000 sorry 4 000 volunteers that are available 24 hours in 35 languages whenever you want you could just call them for example you could call and speak for example they have bahasa malayo and indonesian you could speak for example you go to a pharmacy you don't know what to buy to speak to the for example the pharmacist so you could call this number and speak in malayo okay i want this medicine so and so and you just hand the phone to the person to the pharmacist and he will the person will translate to the pharmacist what you you go into a taxi the taxi doesn't speak your language you just call this number and give it to the taxi and then he will take you there and then i thought subhanallah what if we have the same service but for dawah or for Islam where like there is 4 000 volunteers you know they just use a system and this system connects to your cell phone directly it's not like a call center or anything so we would have that many volunteers and the person would call and then they would ask a question about Islam or about or even sometimes a muslim would have a problem and subhanallah imagine if we if we gather the resources in different languages and help people especially malaysia could use this why because malaysia mashallah it's number five in the world now in tourism 35 million people tourists come to malaysia every year you know number one is france 85 million number two spain 52 million number three us 47 number four italy 40 number five malaysia 35 million and i saw mashallah when i went to linkawi island i saw some brothers mashallah they're giving out pamphlets to the tourists who come to the beach even on the beach they go they're relaxed you know some people relax they have nothing to do under the sun they just want a tan you go and give them like a pamphlet and then they could read it and like okay if you need us we're just sitting there if you have any question so alhamdulillah we want we want to mobilize the dawah for this millions who come over here inshallah and i'm sure alhamdulillah you already have many other beautiful projects that i could learn about and i'm still learning about alhamdulillah so jazakumullahu khair i just wanted to share these few thoughts and jazakumullahu khair shah kamal and alhamdulillah we want to see the seerah and when we see these details we always connected to okay how can i apply this to my community to my family in my job in every single aspect of life jazakumullahu khairan wasalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh.

Q&A Session

Inshallah while they warm up just uh just one from the sisters what if i read them that way i answer the easy ones and pretend there's not enough time for the difficult ones good idea yeah you want me to do this one okay it says uh it says assalamu alaikum as you're aware malaysia has a multi-racial community could could you share with us how simple dawah can reach our non-muslim yeah like the non-muslim neighbors um so could you share how simple dawah okay i mean look basically these these kinds of things i mean i can i can give some general guidelines and general ideas of how dawah has worked

elsewhere and for the most part some of the rules will apply in many parts of the world and there are certain things that are specific to a culture specific to a nation that the details of which should be defined by people who live there and not some stranger who's been here for like four days and just had nasir lamak and now he thinks he knows about malaysia you know and then i'm going to tell you this is what you should do so i think that's because as we're having this course we had a long discussion with the students about the different the different factors and variables that make dawah in malaysia quite unique and we're speaking about how for example the like the non-muslims consider Islam to be what in malaysia the non-muslims if you're chinese if you're if you're indian what do you consider Islam in malaysia who is it for thank you very much he said it for the malays right and this was like this was a dynamic that i was not aware of and then when we started to discuss this although you should have heard the the revert chinese in the room and they just kept turning they really they were just hitting the malays on the head and look at what's that look at this and look at that and not a single one got up actually and spoke about this just you see it was kind of an overwhelming situation this is something i encountered in south africa for example where the the blacks as they call them if you told them anything about Islam they're like yeah but Islam is for for the indians because they're indians there who are muslim all the muslims are indian so anytime you talk about Islam no no Islam is for the indians christianity for the whites and we have our belief in our ancestors and things like that with that being said it's as simple as just reaching out to people the muslims and their majority and if everyone reached out to a neighbor to a co-worker to a friend one thing you would eliminate is this idea that Islam is for the malays when you're inviting everyone like well i'm not a malay but yeah but because it's for everybody you remove this idea and when you talk and reach out to your neighbors co-workers friends people who are around you live around you then these people start to become affected and if they start to become muslim one person becomes muslim and then he shares it with someone else in their family or one of their friends one of their acquaintances and just look at how the numbers could grow so much so is there something now so special here that a regular dawah technique won't work just reach out to people just speak to people be friendly to people so um and i'm not going to specifically go over a you know a program or how to set up a dawah like project but it's just about going out and trying and speaking to people many times we don't do the basic which is speaking to people this is one thing that you you notice when you live in the west and then you you live in a muslim country or you visit a muslim country that when you live as a minority in the west amongst the majority that's non-muslim you're very double conscious very double conscious sit with any group of muslims you're having dinner at a restaurant and the talk will be somewhere related somehow related to dawah they're going to talk about dawah because people are very double conscious you know and when i moved to sudan last year i spent last year in sudan and our servant we had a worker in the house and we made it obligatory upon her to listen to a one hour lecture every day yeah she was spoiled she had one hour nap she had one hour lecture and this not doesn't happen in sudan you sleep for one hour why are you sleeping i'm tired tired get up i'll pay you work so she was she had to watch a lecture in her language found one on the internet and she would listen to it so when some of my family members found out that the girl gets dawah they said even the servant girl

you give her dawah to i said okay these servant girls they're not going to be resurrected on the day of judgment and everyone else is brought to life but service they will sleep still they don't go to jannah or the hellfire anything like that said servant girls they're not resurrected on the day of judgment when i said that they were quiet so people need to be more dawah conscious that we it's always at the top of my head someone helps me out and the top of my head is to give them dawah i meet someone the top of my head is to give them dawah so what if we just made that our basic project how different would things be so how about that my only suggestion basic dawah reaching out to people that's your project forget a big project that requires millions and so on and so forth and of course uh the brothers or the mashayikh might have uh suggestions that they want to close with any questions from the brothers okay we'll take one from the written questions here uh okay i read somewhere that rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was offered jannah or immortality he chose jannah is it right to think that if he had chosen immortality we would still here have a rasul amongst us or is this story told in arab um i never knew that these were the offers were those the offers the shaykh jannah versus immortality i want in immortality what it was to to continue living versus okay imo him but elaborate on that then it's like hello when i'm done you come elaborate on that one give me the easy ones and then shaykh wali will do we'll do all the other ones okay all right so okay how can we be sure that details of sirah that we read from books are authentic i think from a layman perspective excellent very good uh first of all you can you can't um let's see let's put it this way as a general rule first of all that the the guidelines for the seerah the the strictness of like um the authenticity of of narrations is more relaxed when it comes to the seerah versus the books of fiqh and the books of hadith the the seerah writers were specifically more relaxed with scrutinizing the authenticity of narrations when it comes to the seerah that's why there are many famous stories that are weak and we still mention them i know if someone says you don't go up to him after the salah and yell at him because it's acceptable to narrate a weak narration that may have some issues with it for example many of the stories that are weak like the prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was in the cave and the the spider came and it covered the cave of the you know the the mouth of the cave with its spider web so they knew that no one was inside because they would have broken the web yeah and then you know for many years we used to not kill spiders because they taught us as children the spiders saved the life of the prophet and then when we discovered it was a weak narration how many spiders we killed that day so so so the first thing is that the weak narrations are acceptable so long as you don't try to make rulings out of the weak narrations you don't try to make a ruling out of it but you can still pull out some benefits and things of that sort so that's why you you will find weak narrations in the stories of the seerah and it's not harmful so long as you don't try to make religious rules out of these stories the other thing is that you can't go wrong with some of the known books whether they be classical books or contemporary books some of the known books of the seerah and the author has already done all that work for you he has indicated in the footnote which of which narration is authentic which one is weak and he has made life so much easy for you and so many fantastic books have been translated into english now i don't know if you want to mention some yeah i would mention dr ali salabi's book on the prophet number of volumes and it's translated into english and it's translated nicely in good english one one of one of my favorite books of

seerah it's it's a book called a seerah nabawiyah it's like in english it would be something like the the prophetic seerah in light of its of the original sources yeah i think that's how they translate in english dar es salaam has translated that into two volumes and it's an excellent book in the footnote and it's one of the best in in my opinion as far as if you're confused sometimes you read books with all the respect like for example the sealed nectar you read it and sometimes like it's missing details i'm like and sometimes you're confused like how did this happen while this is happening all those confusions will be clarified when you read the other one the seerah the prophetic seerah according to its in light of its original sources um uh fantastic the footnote will tell you this narration is weak he still mentioned it but here it tells you that it's weak for example or this one will tell you that there is not a single authentic narration of this incident and it will be an incident that people use to take religious rulings and so on and so forth so what i'm trying to say is that the work has been done all you have to do is just find that work read it enjoy contemplate further if the sheikh contemplated that's one author contemplating it doesn't mean you can't still contemplate and think what are the other benefits and this book is as well at the end of each section will tell you the lessons learned from this the lessons learned from badr the lessons learned from uhud the lessons learned from udaybiya and so on and so forth so in a nutshell that's the answer anyone from the brothers now the last book so the first one yeah was ali it was uh um who said naam naam alice salabi that was the first one the second one the the one of the authentic sources the author his name is mahdi rizq allah yeah and he's from sudan just by coincidence that's the i mean nothing to do with why we're promoting the book and ali salabi studied in sudan yeah i mean what can we do when greatness is linked to that country i don't know okay last one here sometimes we come across descriptions of rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) he's built his hair his face and generally that he was handsome so the question is are we allowed to imagine him when we think about these descriptions okay suppose i told you you're not allowed to imagine him then what what will you do he will imagine him so yeah are we allowed to imagine him it's just you will imagine him and every one of us will close our eyes we imagine abu bakr to look a certain way and sometimes before we read their description we describe we imagine them very different i used to think abu bakr was a short guy full you know big beard and i discovered very skinny very skinny eyes deep inside nose a little with a bridge sharp big nose yeah totally and you know something like we can never like when we hear someone's voice over the phone when we are given a description of someone we can never imagine them accurately and then you're given a description and whether you like it or not you will imagine what that person looks like based on the description and especially because you know we're very visual as humans in our memory the visual memory works better than and most other forms of memory so you'll inevitably imagine now is it haram to imagine why and if it's haram that if i have an image of what the prophet looks like why would it be haram because i'm not trying to say that's exactly what he looks like i'm just have an image in my mind so it's not a question of you know is it allowed or not it's just something that happens it's human nature and yeah yeah you don't you don't now go on and start drawing what this what you well i read the description because you know how we have the what do you call the guy who draws for the police the yeah the sketch artist right the forensics so when you describe someone to a forensics artist they'll draw that person so one smart

muslim said well we have the detailed description of the prophet i take this i read it to a forensic artist we get the picture of the prophet so pointed out you don't go now and try to draw out this image and what it looks like but if you imagine something what are you going to do that's the that's the end of the written questions he was going to comment on elaborate on one yes so the questioner doesn't go home confused no questions from the brothers that's fantastic i just repeat the question for the benefit of people here so this question was related to the hadith where the prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was offered jannah or immortality and he chose jannah is this story authentic and yeah is it reliable for us to learn from i know the general narration i don't know specifically this one i'll have to check it but the general narration that the messengers of Allah in general that at the end of their life that they are given the choice of eternity and you've probably heard for example the story of musa alaihi salam when he poked the prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) narrated that he poked the eye of the angel of death and there was some people when they when they read this hadith they get confused about the meaning of it that what happened in this case but specifically for example one of the explanations that you find for the scholars about this hadith is that because he was not given the choice yet and Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala would give some of his messengers a choice that if they wanted to continue or if it's time for them to go but specifically about the prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم - sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) i would need to go back and check this narration inshallah and that's why i told the shaykh i i'm not really sure about it barakallah no jazakallah khair shaykh is there any other questions of me uh that's the end okay alhamdulillah so we like alhamdulillah you have your notes and very good and inshallah these notes come from ink to live you know inshallah action inshallah and i guess some of you are continuing with the shaykh and the second weekend of the course the fiqh of dawah so alhamdulillah i mean subhanallah in most muslim countries you find that the percentage of muslim is like 99 98 97 alhamdulillah i mean it's a blessing that here it's 60 because you look at the opportunity alhamdulillah that inshallah ta'ala we would love to inshallah for everyone to see the light path of Islam and even if they don't necessarily join Islam we would love that everyone alhamdulillah on this planet would join Islam but at least they would get a good image about it alhamdulillah to keep that good relationship and comes through example through the example that we learn about and apply and until this day subhanallah you look at the hadith of the prophet i mean when we when we gather all the hadith that were ever narrated with all the degrees of narration you find that the ones that survive today with the with the different narration everything about 180 000 but you take out the weak ones and then you take out the repeated ones and you are left with approximately 5 500 authentic hadith without repetition and without the the weak and everyone so subhanallah when you think about it and 5 500 it may seem a lot but look at the life of prophet how long was he a prophet 23 years multiply 23 by 350 not 365 is the the solar calendar no we use what the lunar calendar because the prophet that's how his life was calculated so you multiply that by 354 you get about that the prophet his days as a prophet were about 7 700 around that so we have 5 500 authentically so almost we only have one hadith per day less than one hadith per day of the life of prophet in other words we only have a five minute snapshot of every single day he lived so that's considered very little because Allah subhanallah has wisdom that you know if Allah wanted we would have his 24 hours from the moment he woke up to the

moment he slept every single day in the 23 years but Allah subhanahu wa'ta'ala wrote that only these narrations are the ones that survive for us because these are the ones that we actually need so when you think of it that way it turns out that 5 500 is not really a lot inshallah so i recommend i i actually don't recommend that you open like for example sahih al-bukhari and read directly someone say what i say yes i recommend that you read the hadith with explanation because what happens is when we read the hadith by itself what happens many people what they jump to their own conclusion you know i told you this i mentioned this example before someone opens in the beginning the first hadith is like whoever says la ilaha illallah enters paradise i close the book why am i going to read the rest see so so that's the problem and when we read quran alhamdulillah sometimes in ramadan we try to finish the book from beginning to end and i hope you're doing it for the rest of the year but also the quran with the tafseer of it because then we make it applicable you know there is this statistic and it's good in some way and it's it's uh it's disturbing in another way that they say that the approximate number of hufadh of quran in the world is about 10 million of which eight and a half million don't even speak arabic now it sounds great subhanallah eight and a half people would memorize a book that they don't even they don't even speak its language we say allahu akbar look at how miraculous the quran is but we look at in a different way okay so what if we memorized it and then we didn't apply the teachings of it and this is why the companions they didn't do like many of us do like okay let me memorize it from beginning to end and then i'm going to going to do the explanation one day if children yes children because they have a good time memory they could do that and then they could learn the meaning with and later but now as we are adults we want to do the way like look at the 10 verses we learn the meaning of it we learn the we learn the teachings of it the fiqh the hadith the dawah skills everything once we finish those we move on to the next okay if you do it that way 10 verses let's say a week 10 verses a week the quran six how much six two three six okay alhamdulillah look at how many is going to take it's going to take you about 12 years you know the tafsir of the quran beginning to end inshallah ta'ala so that's just my last thought about it that the quran and the hadith of prophet with explanation even leave it next to your your bed before you sleep one of this one of that you know the tafsir alhamdulillah you know your brain this these studies about the brain that when you read something before you sleep and then when you sleep like the brain reorganizes the information and puts it into categories subhanallah this is why sometimes you you know you're studying at night and something you don't much understand you wake up okay now it's clear and this happens this happens to some of us subhanallah and sometimes you even you start dreaming about it and it starts repeating in your head and then in the morning you feel like you didn't get this quality but alhamdulillah little that is repeated and coming frequently is better than doing something you know sometimes you sit on it you read 200 pages and then you never come back to it because you burned yourself out no (قليل دائم - qalilun da'im) make that limit two hadith per day for example and stick to it for the rest of your life trust me if we compare and i ask my students like when we do this plan six months later the ones who did little and continuous would have read far than those who read in bursts like they read one big chapter and then they stop for a week or two so let's inshallah ta'ala apply that in our life barakallah fikum jazakumullah khairan wasalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh
