Opening: The Khutbah Introduction
O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims [in submission to Him].
O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul and created from it its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women. And fear Allah, through whom you ask one another, and the wombs. Indeed Allah is ever, over you, an Observer.
O you who have believed, fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice. He will [then] amend for you your deeds and forgive you your sins. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly attained a great attainment.
Hajar's Faith: Complete Trust in Allah
When Hajar عليها السلام was taken to what is now the haram in Mecca and Ibrahim عليه السلام leaves her with their son Ismail and turns around and begins walking away leaves her in the middle of a desert with no shelter minimal food that would last just a few days an empty desert which would equal certain death to be left in that state would equal certain death and he begins walking away and she's asking him why are you leaving us here? what's going on? until she finally says did Allah command you to leave us here?
And then Ibrahim عليه السلام finally answers and says yes it's a command from Allah her immediate response is if that's the case if it's a command from Allah then I have full faith in Allah then Allah will not abandon me Allah will not abandon Allah will not leave us alone despite what she sees of physically looking in front of her she's alone, a woman with her baby infant with a few dates, a little water and that's all that she has what would be certain there's no way one can survive like this when she's told it's a command from Allah her immediate without hesitation response is Allah will not abandon me.
Musa and the People: Faith in the Face of Defeat
When Musa عليه السلام was driven by Firaun and his army Allah says about him Firaun:
The possessor of the stakes - you know when you have a tent and you go out camping and you peg the tent into the ground you peg it into the ground Allah uses this description of Firaun because if you were to look at his army as far as you can see it would be if his army had all come out it would just be tents filling up the whole
area massive army he comes out and he's chasing Firaun and Bani Israel and they reach the border of the sea in front of them is the sea behind them is an army that's come out to massacre every last one of them.
They've already massacred how many thousands of babies every year every other year the babies that were born were being killed and if they have the capacity to murder babies to genocide a population of Bani Israel then why would they have any hesitation in massacring the adults and so when the people of Musa عليه السلام see the army behind them and see the sea in front of them they see no way out what they see is manifest defeat and they say:
We are going to be overcome. What is Musa عليه السلام's response? He sees what they see he sees the army behind them he sees the sea in front of them but there's no hesitation rather:
No! My Lord is with me he will show me a way he will guide me a path.
The Faith of Gaza: Examples of Unshakeable Iman
And you find in the people before us that Allah has recorded in the Quran the strength of faith of Iman that they have despite what physically appears to them of manifest defeat. Allah has showed us glimpses of that in the people of Gaza. Allah has given them strength that you and I have witnessed over the past two years and subhanallah when I had a chance to go and sit with people in person and see this one of the goals of going to Gaza of course is to treat to offer medical services but that's I consider a small part of the overall mission a big part of it is the same thing I'm wondering that you are wondering where does this Iman come from?
The Young Man Shot Nine Times
You know I sat with a standing with a young boy 19 years old who had been shot 9 times one leg was already amputated and the other leg needs to be amputated 7 shots were in the legs 2 were in his pelvis 19 years old and his life full ahead of him and this is outside Shodal Aqsa hospital his brother had pushed him out of the hospital to get him some fresh air because the hospital is overwhelmed with patients and it's overcrowded the heat and the like so he just pushed him out to get some air so we're talking and he's telling me what happened he and his brother had gone out to look for food and there were snipers in the area who opened fire on them he was shot 9 times his brother wasn't shot at all one leg amputated the next leg to be amputated he's soon to be a double amputee and after telling me his whole story you know what he ends his last words after summarizing everything that happened to him he says:
He says all of this is a decree from Allah and how sweet is a decree of Allah. 19 years old to have this perspective to have this faith in Allah that despite what I see what I'm living through what our people are living through we have full faith in Allah the decree of Allah is always the best.
The Young Widow Who Serves at the Morgue
I sat before a 32 year old widow who just 6 months before the war she was married and then her husband was martyred in the genocide she's homeless she is left without her husband widow now she doesn't know where her next meal is coming from and she would volunteer at the morgue at Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunus she would come to take care of the washing and the preparation of our sisters who were martyred or who were killed or who died to take care of their bodies before their burial and she's of course a Hafidah of Quran and in between washing bodies you know how she would spend her time students would come to her other sisters would come to her to recite the Quran and she would correct them and teach them and then they would proceed to wash the next body when the next body came.
And when I asked her to give a reminder to share something for I can share with the Muslims back home in America and wherever we can spread the message she gave a impromptu 15 minute like a lecture that was just subhanallah every word was like should be written in gold and among the things she said was she said that we are a people of the Quran.
I asked them where does this strength come from and she said we are a people of the Quran and when Allah tells us things in the Quran we believe it so for me when my husband has been martyred and I'm left as a widow and homeless and the like I still have no doubt that the promise of Allah is true when Allah says:
Don't be deceived by those who go about in the land and massacring and killing and taking the land and the like don't be deceived Allah says so we believe and again she's living in a place where everything is destroyed it's just rubble all around them her family is killed her home is destroyed but she's seen this manifest defeat quote on quote but she says I believe.
Allah says this is a short time for them. Allah says in the Quran:
Allah will defend those who believe so it's my belief Allah will defend us so subhanallah you see shades of this kind of Iman that Allah spoke of in the Quran and the people of Gaza.
The Man Under the Rubble for Eight Days
You know I sat in front of a brother I was at European hospital in one of my trips and I was brought to see a man he's sitting on the hospital bed his legs crossed and his face is covered his face is wrapped in bandages from here up to the top of his head so all I can see is part of his lip is ripped open and it's become black and when tissue when your muscles and the like become black it's a sign that it's lost blood supply and that part of the tissue has died so you can see this tissue that's hanging down is dead and that's what I can see of him and he's sitting there but I can't see his face because all of it is covered.
And he begins telling me him and his families around him his nephews and nieces were around him his core family was killed he was in a home that was bombed some family members were killed and some survived and
were still in the home now nobody when the army is in the area no one can go there because they'll be killed so the extended family has to wait until the army withdraws and then they can go and check on their loved ones.
So subhanallah 8 days after the house was bombed the army withdrew from that area and so the family went to find what happened and they found him alive after 8 days under the rubble and the man is holding a masbaha in his hand and he's telling me his story and in between telling me the story he's making dhikr of Allah every now and then he stops and says:
He's making these words of praise of Allah and the like and he said that after we were bombed 4 days after the army soldiers came into the home and they found others that were alive and they killed them and he was alive as well but he said I made a dua to Allah when the soldiers came and he said the dua I made was:
Oh Allah like you saved Yunus علیه السلام from the belly of the whale and like you saved Yusuf عليه السلام from the bottom of the well and like you saved Ibrahim عليه السلام from the massive fire oh Allah please save me. This was the dua he made and whether the soldiers saw him and thought he was dead or they didn't see him at all allahu a'lam but they left they left him alive and then his family found him and then brought him to the hospital and he's telling me this story.
What Was Going Through His Mind Under the Rubble?
And one of the questions I would always ask myself is these people who were under the rubble for days what goes through their mind what are the thoughts in your last because what's expected you're going to die the expectation would be you're going to die so what would be the final thoughts when you have clarity at this moment you know this dunya we get busy in the business and the hustle and the bustle and we earning money and building our career we get tied up in this dunya but at that moment if you're under the rubble waiting for death what would be the thoughts that go through your mind so I asked him this question what was going through your mind?
And you know what he said just boggled my mind it doesn't make sense and this is someone by the way his face was wrapped you know when they took him to surgery and they unwrapped the bandages from his face the surgeon I didn't see it myself personally but I saw the picture of his face he showed me on his phone the picture of his face and brothers he had no face left his whole face was ripped open you can't see his eye from his nose from his mouth it's just flesh for 8 days he's sitting like that imagine if you just put a pillow on your face after 2 minutes you'll feel uncomfortable it's blocking my breathing I'm feeling hot his face is ripped open one shrapnel he lost his eyesight subhanallah one eye the shrapnel went through the eye and he lost and the other one was crushed he's blind now.
But he made dua: Ya Allah like you saved Yusuf and Yunus from the whale in the well save me. Allah saved his life which doesn't make sense medically 8 days under the rubble without water and food how will you survive but Allah saved him he made a dua and Allah answered the dua.
So when I asked him what was going through your mind you know what he said he said I was thinking of a hadith a statement of the Prophet, a hadith qudsi. This is the hadith that I kept playing in my mind again and again. What's the hadith? It's a hadith where Allah says:
I swear by my might and my majesty I will not cause my slave to have two senses of fear nor two senses of security so if my slave feels safe from me in this dunya you live this life not thinking of Allah not thinking of the consequences of what we do we feel safe from Allah in this dunya I will cause this person to feel a sense of fear on the day of judgment but if he lives his life fearful of me in this world on the day of judgment I will give him a sense of security.
At that time he will feel secure so this is the hadith that was going through my mind that ya Allah make my fear of you greater than anything else so that when I meet you on the day of judgment I will be given security and peace. Subhanallah where does this tawfiq, this ilham this inspiration from Allah come from?
And the second thing he said was the dhikr of Allah I would busy myself in the dhikr of Allah and literally he's saying that as he's holding a masbah and making dhikr of Allah and his whole family they're all amazing his nephew was next to him I asked him after he told me this story every word was like gold I said I wish I could record what you said can you say it all again and I'll record it and his family felt shy for him to be recorded in the physical state that he's in with his face bandaged and the like and so they said no but his nephew said he recorded a message for me and he recited a Qur'an with the most beautiful recitation he's quoting poetry about the shuhada of Allah and how they have provision from Allah and he said subhanallah he says something one of the words he said that I found so powerful he says he said in Mecca if you go to the haram you go to perform umrah or hajj you find like a very when you see the Kaaba you feel this divine awe of seeing the Kaaba and he says and there's a sense of beauty in Medina and he said and he said you find a sense of رَهْبَة in the people of Gaza.
This statement was true it was true.
Three Sources of Strength: Where Does This Iman Come From?
And so I would ask the brothers and sisters there this question where does this come from where do you find this iman what is in the water in Gaza that you drink that makes you have such faith even in such difficult circumstances and the answers I would get from them are a few three main things they would say and this is something that subhanallah whoever you ask they would say the same thing.
The first thing they would point to and of course first and foremost is from Allah as if Allah gave them this to show the ummah to awaken the ummah giving us examples literally that we read of in books in the past.
First: Depth of Belief in Allah
But he said the first thing they would say is there is a depth of belief in Allah you know what we study growing up in the Quran and ahadith and the like these aren't just words these aren't just statements but they're guidance
it's guidance for our lives.
So I sat before a physician who had been in prison for five months and was then released and in prison they go through the worst imaginable of torture physical, mental, the like so physical beatings torture, positions they would put them in, assault any things I'm shy to say on the minbar we have children here as well I won't say but you can imagine the stuff that they've gone through five months and when he was released he was telling us what happened to him we were standing on the balcony Nasser hospital Khan Yunus and one of the doctors who was with me from the United Kingdom he told them, he said that you know this is very difficult for us to hear you're describing what you went through it's difficult for us to hear about it I can't imagine what it was like for you to live through it.
And you know what he said of course we're all Muslim, the UK doctor is Muslim I'm Muslim, he's Muslim but he begins teaching us the same hadith I've heard many times you've heard many times he said, you know the prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) what he said he said:
(Sahih Muslim 2999)
Strange is the affair of the believer, the affair no matter what happens to the believer it always turns out better for him and that's only the case for a believer if something difficult happens to him he shows patience and it turns out better for him and if something good happens to him he shows gratitude to Allah and it turns out better for him.
So he said, it is my belief because the prophet said this it's always better for him so it's my belief that what I went through for those five months of torture and abuse and the like it was really better for me perhaps and this is his words perhaps if I wasn't in prison a bomb would have landed next to me and left me paralyzed for the rest of my life or amputated or the like but Allah saved me from that by putting me in this situation.
I believe that Allah put me in a better situation because because because it is our aqeedah in Allah our belief in Allah that Allah is more merciful to us than our own mothers and you think about this as he's saying this I'm thinking SubhanAllah what we go through of life of tests that pale in comparison to what he went through and how sometimes we get impatience or we begin to question Allah and this man lived through what he lived through and he says I believe I believe this is what the prophet said so it's a depth of iman not just memorizing hadith or Quran but understanding the message and living by that message.
Second: Attachment to the Quran
The second thing they would point to is their attachment to the Quran you know in August 2023 so before the war began there were 13,000 hufadh in Gaza who didn't just graduate their hifth but 13,000 hufadh who did what's called a sard where they would sit from salat al fajr and begin reciting surah fatiha and they would recite all the way to surah nas the whole Quran, the whole mushaf they would recite in one sitting until about maghrib before maghrib they would finish 13,000 hufadh did this in the month of August 2023 before the war started.
There are people of Quran, I've witnessed it with my own eyes in Ramadan last year 2024 Ramadan not this year, the previous year at European hospital there were 30 sisters who were reciting Quran from salat al fajr four
of them were doing fatiha to nas and the other 26 were reciting surah fatiha to the end of surah annisa, about one sixth of the Quran but four of them they began surah fatiha and they were reciting the last 29th day of Ramadan all the way to surah annas there are people of Quran.
The Surgeon Reciting Quran During Surgery
I was in the operating room in Kamal Adwan hospital in Ramadan 2024 and at 2am 1.40am I remember because I have the time on my phone we were operating on a young man who ended up dying shaheed I took care of this young man in the emergency room he had collapsed lung, he had multiple injuries, we don't have medicine to give him so I'm cutting into his chest and putting a tube into his chest without any medicine, without any pain medicine without any sedation, all I can tell him is say la ilaha illallah say bismillah because Talha ibn Ubaidillah in the battle of Uhud when he was defending the messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) and his finger was cut off, he said hass out of pain when his finger was cut off and the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said:
(Al-Hakim in Al-Mustadrak)
If you said bismillah instead of saying hass the angels would have raised you up in front of the people while the people are watching.
I tell you by Allah, myself I was stitching up a young child maybe as old as him, maybe 7-8 years old I'm stitching him in the ER, I don't have medicine to give him to numb it up and I'm using a big needle because we don't have a small needle and he's crying and he's yelling in pain and I told him this hadith I told him I don't have medicine to give you but the Prophet of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) told Talha ibn Ubaidillah:
And he this is a child maybe 8 years old and wallah he began saying Bismillah and he stopped crying and he let me do the procedure and he didn't cry after that.
And this young man, I treated him in the ER now he's in the operating room doing surgery and the surgeon the surgeon, hafidh of Quran of course, the hufadh are plenty in Gaza at 2am, almost 2am and after fasting all day and operating all day and night in the middle of the surgery he begins reciting Quran wallah in the most beautiful recitation right now he is still in prison he was in prison in December 2024 the Israelis captured him when they sieged Kamal Adwan Hospital may Allah free him and give him strength Allahumma ameen Dr. Ahmed Jadallah is his name reciting Quran with the most beautiful recitation in the middle of surgery after fasting all day and working all day but this is their relationship to the Quran.
There's a depth of the Quran is what gives them strength and Allah says in the Quran:
The Quran is a means of tabat for our hearts to keep our hearts firm so when they go through all that they go through you wonder where does the strength of Iman come from and how can we learn from them we learn that the Quran plays a central role in their lives and they told me this is their words themselves Gaza wasn't like this 20 years ago but there's been a revival an emphasis on teaching the youth and teaching the community the Quran and the messages of the Quran and so we have to take what they have gone through and learn for
ourselves how can we how can we have the strength of Iman like they have a depth of belief in Allah and a depth of a relationship with the Quran.
Dr. Motaz: The Doctor Who Stayed Behind
October 7th comes and the war starts. And now he's separated from his wife and his newborn child. And he stayed in Shifa Hospital every day, serving the people until the first ceasefire. In December, he had the chance to go be with his family, his wife and kids, or stay. It's a ceasefire now, quote-unquote ceasefire.
But he said, I have a duty to my people here, I'm going to stay. And he stayed.
Jawad: The Nurse Who Answered the Call
There was a nurse I sat in front of, Jawad, a Hafidh of Qur'an, of course, just like Dr. Motaz is a Hafidh of Qur'an. And he just graduated his nursing. He doesn't have any clinical practice yet. He just graduated school.
And when the war began, he said, I went to the hospital, Shifa Hospital, and I told them, put me wherever you need me, I'm here to help, I'm here to serve. And so he served in the hospital, he lived in the hospital, until the first ceasefire. His family's there in northern Gaza.
And so for almost a month and a half, he hadn't seen his parents, his parents hadn't seen him. And when the ceasefire was announced, he went to his family. And SubhanAllah, before the ceasefire was announced, they sieged Shifa Hospital, actually.
And so some staff were leaving, some staff stayed behind, not knowing what's going to happen. He was amongst those because he was new and the like, and it didn't have a lot of clinical, he wasn't as important. They told him, go home.
So he left while the Shifa was under siege. He gets home and he sees his family for the first time in over almost 40 days. And he said, and I asked him, what was that gathering, what was that meeting like, seeing your family for the first time? And he said it was like, you know, that they were overwhelmed with joy as if they saw their, you know, son for the first time after coming back from a long travel or the like.
The Call to Ahli Hospital
But he said that night, that same night he just got back, because Shifa Hospital was under siege, Ahli Hospital, which is nearby, they asked for help. They put out a call, we need anybody who has medical training to come to Ahli Hospital because Shifa is now under siege, the largest hospital in Gaza. People can no longer go there, they're coming to us now, we're the next closest hospital, we need help.
So he asked his parents, and his parents said go. And I want you to think about that for a second, because I asked them, what were their feelings when you asked them that question? Your son, imagine you as a father, you as a mother, your son comes to you and tells you after being gone for 40 days, and you're older in age, he's 23 years old, he can take care of you, and he was out for 40 days, he comes back and the hospitals are being
attacked, and he's going now to another hospital that's going to be attacked. Would you tell your son, yes go serve the people or not?
This is what I mean by living by the Qur'an, it's not just words. But he said, my parents they felt happy that I was doing something for the sake of Allah, but they of course, at the same time they felt concerned over me, but they felt happy that I'm going out for the sake of Allah, and so I went.
Living by the Quran: True Sacrifice
You know Allah says in the Quran:
Why is that when you're told to go on the path of Allah, you stick, you hold tight to the earth, you don't want to leave. When Mu'taz is saying I'm gonna stay behind, even though my daughter, my brand-new daughter, by the way he hadn't seen her until a year and a half later, to the ceasefire in January, his wife and daughter finally came back and he saw them after over a year of being away.
But Allah says:
All of these things that we hold dearly to us, our family, our parents, our business, all these, our home and the like, if that's more beloved to you than Allah and his Messenger and Jihad for the sake of Allah, then wait.
So you know what, I have a duty to serve my people, I'm not going to go to my family, I'm gonna stay behind. These messages in the Qur'an, we read them, but are we willing to live by them? You know, when you find a people who are living by the Qur'an, then you find that when the test comes they're ready to face the test.
The Karamat: Divine Blessings in Gaza
You know, SubhanAllah, I wanted so much to share with you and I wanted to share with you the karamat from the people of Gaza, but the time is up for the khutbah, but I'll just end with this. So many stories you'd hear, I'll just end with one because to give you an idea of the things that we see and the fruits, the fruits of living by the Qur'an and having, investing in your relationship on Allah now:
Get to know Allah in times of ease, Allah will be with you in times of difficulty.
The Story at Ahli Hospital
Mahmood Basal, the head of the civil defense, you've all probably seen him before if you don't know his name. He comes on media and he talks about, they're the ones who go to the bombings and the missiles to take people out of the rubble. He said, I was at Ahli Hospital when it was after it was attacked and besieged and it closed
down. There's no medical services being offered at the hospital now, but I was there and people sometimes would still come and two people came, a young man and a young woman, both in their 20s.
And the young man, both of them have been mortally wounded, they're going to die from their injuries. And there's no medical care there, there's no medicine there, there's nothing they can offer to begin with, but they're there. And so he said, he pointed to me, we were standing at Ahli Hospital, he pointed to me where exactly it happened.
And he said that the young man, he kept saying:
And he died. Those were his last words. Oh Allah, in your path, oh Allah, seeking your pleasure. Then he spoke his last.
So then he turned his attention to the young woman next to him. And he tried to comfort her, he knew she was going to die. Her injuries, she was going to die. But trying to comfort her, he says, don't worry, your injuries are minor. I'm going to go get some medicine for you. There's no medicine there, but just to give her comfort in her heart, I'm going to go get some medicine for you.
You know what she said? She said:
I'm going to die shaheed, I'm going to die shaheed.
And then she said:
I can see paradise. I'm not going to survive this, I can see paradise. And then she died.
The Example of Asiya: Seeing Paradise Before Death
When Asiya was being tortured and pegged to the ground and Firaun was torturing her, and she began laughing.
Firaun says:
Are you amazed at how crazy this woman is? We're torturing her but she's laughing.
She's laughing. Why is she laughing (لِأَنَّهَا رَأَتْ مَا لَهَا) She saw her home in paradise. When she asked:
Oh Allah save me from Firaun and his actions and save me from the wrongdoing people. Allah took her soul before she died and allowed her to see her place in paradise. And here's this woman saying I can see paradise
before she passes away.
I've seen, I've met brothers, family of a man who died shaheed and literally he's on the street and literally he's laughing. He's literally laughing as he's mortally wounded. This is what the Quran does. This is what faith, this is what Iman does.
A Call to Awaken Our Hearts
So you know in the busyness of life, the distraction of life, we lose track of the important things. But Gaza, Allah has given it to us as a witness to put things in perspective for us.
To bring us, if our lives haven't changed, if our Iman hasn't increased, if our connection to the masajid, our connection to the book of Allah hasn't changed, that there's something wrong with our hearts. May Allah forgive us. May Allah give us the tawfiq to come back to him.
May Allah give us the strength of Iman to live a life that's pleasing to him so that when we meet Allah we will also be smiling when we see angels with beautiful faces, with akfan from jannah, and a fragrance from jannah. May Allah give us the strength of Iman to be a helper to those who are in need. Those in Gaza, those in Sudan, those here locally, those around the world.
May Allah give us the faith of the people before us.
May Allah use us for his deen and not replace us by those who will serve his deen. May Allah, we ask Allah to forgive our sins, to pardon us for our shortcomings, to heal those who are sick, to give victory to those who are oppressed, to free those who are imprisoned. Oh Allah, we ask you to send your peace and blessings upon the (صلى الله عليه وسلم) Prophet
