Introduction
Alright everyone, (بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ - bismillahir-rahmanir-rahim)
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ وَالصَّلَاةُ وَالسَّلَامُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ وَعَلَى آلِهِ وَصَحْبِهِ أَجْمَعِينَ
Brothers and sisters in Islam, Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, out of His mercy and wisdom, brought to us a man, a man who was a human being.
And the people asked, who were enemies of Islam, they questioned: Why would Allah send a man who is like us? Why would Allah send a man who is a human, that talks like us, eats like us, walks in the market like us? Why wouldn't He choose an angel for example?
And the reply came from Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, explaining this in very simple words: Say that if Allah were to choose an angel walking among you as a prophet, you would have also said, why did Allah send an angel? We cannot imitate an angel because we are humans and they are a different life form.
The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم : A Human Like Us
So Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala sent a prophet, a messenger who is like you and I. Like you and I in the sense of his biology, his nature, what he was created from, same emotions, same pain, and same struggles as you and I would go through. The only difference was that he was a Rasul.
He said: قُلْ سُبْحَانَ رَبِّي هَلْ كُنتُ إِلَّا بَشَرًا رَّسُولًا - "Say glory be to my creator, Allah. I am nothing but a Bashar, a human being, and a Rasul, a messenger."
Brothers and sisters in Islam, this messenger of Allah, the human being, he is not detached from us. Whenever you hear about him, you know that you can relate to him.
And for a prophet of Allah to come to guide us and to teach us, he has to go through similar situations that we went through. He needs to have similar emotions that we have. He needs to go through pain and struggle, happiness and sadness.
He cried, salallahu alayhi wasalam. He cried like the way you cry and even more. He cried for some of the same reasons that you cried for.
Rasulullah, salallahu alayhi wasalam, was a human, but he is a perfect example of how one can take his human form to be even more valuable and more greater than the angels themselves.
The Compassionate Prophet
Rasulullah, salallahu alayhi wasalam, brothers and sisters in Islam, was a compassionate, merciful, the most merciful of human beings, the most compassionate of human beings, the one whose heart is attached to the whole ummah, in fact to the whole world. And even after his death, his heart is still attached to us, brothers and sisters in Islam.
And on the day of judgment, he will be resurrected and his heart is still attached to us. The first thing which he will think about is you when he is resurrected. The first thing Rasulullah, salallahu alayhi wasalam, will remember when he is resurrected on the day of judgment is you and I. He will say: أُمَّتِي أُمَّتِي - "My ummah, my ummah."
Your Pain is Not Greater Than His
Let me tell you something, mark my words. If you go through a problem in your life or you've been through a situation in your life and it got to a stage where you thought that there is no one suffering as much as you, always remember Rasulullah, salallahu alayhi wasalam.
If you've ever cried and your tears filled the ground and nobody was there to listen to your tears, remember Rasulullah, salallahu alayhi wasalam.
If you had a lost one, maybe you had a child that died, a parent that died, a sibling who died, a wife or husband who died, remember Rasulullah, salallahu alayhi wasalam. He went through it all.
If you have any type of problem, a sickness, an illness, someone bullied you, people attacked you, people abused you, people hurt you, remember Rasulullah, salallahu alayhi wasalam. He went through more.
He Never Cried for Himself
Rasulullah, salallahu alayhi wasalam's tears, whenever he cried, it was never because of his self. It was never because of his personal pain. Rasulullah, salallahu alayhi wasalam never cried because of his personal pain.
If you encounter any moment in the history of Rasulullah, salallahu alayhi wasalam's life, where you hear about him crying, Rasulullah, salallahu alayhi wasalam was crying for others.
He was crying for others. He was crying for you and I. He was crying for his ummah. He was crying for the poor, the needy, the destitute. He was crying for those who are astray.
Rasulullah, salallahu alayhi wasalam also cried out of fear of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. And when I say fear, I don't mean that Rasulullah, salallahu alayhi wasalam was afraid of Allah.
Rasulullah, salallahu alayhi wasalam's fear was one of respect, reverence and love. Have you ever heard of someone who fears someone out of love? You know when you're afraid of a lion, you're scared of a lion because it's going to hurt you, it's going to attack you, kill you. But when you think about your mother and father for example, and you say, I fear my dad, I fear my mom.
This fear is as a result of your love that is in between you and them. What you fear is not that they're stronger than you and they're going to devour you like a lion. You could be stronger than your own parents especially as they grow old in age and you grow stronger in your youth.
But you still fear hurting them, upsetting them, disappointing them, losing the trust between you and them, losing the love. This is what you fear. You fear this.
And Rasulullah, salallahu alayhi wasalam feared Allah and that fear turned into tears of love.
The Quranic Description
Let us go into the Quran and begin with the introduction that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala gives us about Rasulullah. What better introduction than this following verse where Allah said:
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ
Which means: There has come to you a Messenger from among you, one of you, the same as you in every aspect of the word.
عَزِيزٌ عَلَيْهِ مَا عَنِتُّمْ - Whenever he saw or heard of a hardship upon you, it was too much for him, it was great upon his shoulders, it hurt him, it made him come very emotional, it made him distressed, it made him feel sorry, it made him concerned, it made him think about you. Any hardship upon you was great upon him.
حَرِيصٌ عَلَيْكُمْ - Very careful to make sure that your affairs are looked after, very careful that you don't fall into harm, very careful that you are safe and protected in this world and in the hereafter. Making sure that you are on the right path, making sure that you don't go astray.
رَءُوفٌ رَّحِيمٌ بِالْمُؤْمِنِينَ - As towards to the believers he was ra'uf, compassionate, rahim, constantly merciful, constantly merciful.
(Quran 9:128)
The First Tears: Loss of His Mother at Age Six
Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم's earliest report that we have, or at least that I know of, of Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم
crying, was when he was only 6 years old.
There was a servant lady whom his parents had bought her a long time ago and then made her part of their family. Her name was Baraka, otherwise known as Umm Ayman. And this lady, she was the one who looked after Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم from the moment he was born. If you don't know her, she is the one who was the first human being to touch Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلمto receive him from his mother Aamina in the middle of the desert. And she wrapped him and took him.
Why am I mentioning her? Because the story is that when he became 6 years old, he was with his mother Aamina and with this servant woman named Baraka, coming from a place of Sham, almost about to reach Makkah in a close place about 20 kilometers away from Makkah, when suddenly Aamina, his mother, was stricken with a disease and she fell to the ground.
Couldn't move anymore. Then Baraka came to try and look after her, tend to her needs. But Aamina was passing away.
Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم was only 6 years old. And can you imagine with me a child? He doesn't know what's going on. He's never seen death before. And the first encounter of death he has to see is his own mother.
We see death on television. We see it in the thousands. And a lot of us have become immune, desensitized to death until it approaches our own family. And maybe Allah has a mercy upon us to make that pain a little bit less by seeing death all the time.
But can you imagine that a child by the age of 6 years old, his father is dead, he never saw his father, he has no siblings, he has no uncles or aunties directly from his father. And the only encounter he sees of death is his own mother, the one whom he is attached to. The most closest person you can have is your mother. And the first encounter of death that you see is your own mother's before your eyes in the middle of nowhere. And she is the only one you have to look after you.
Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم was in that position. He saw his mother turn to Barakah and her tears were flowing. Her agony of pain was increasing. And she is saying to Barakah: You are now his mother.
And Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم is looking at Barakah. Barakah is crying. He is looking at his mother. His mother is crying. She is dying. And Rasulullah 6 صلى الله عليه وسلم year old, does not know what is happening.
And then he realizes that his mother starts to take her last breaths. Her eyes are open looking up into the sky. And she is no longer communicating with Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم He is saying: Ya Ummah. And she is not responding. The mother who always responded to Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم anytime he ever needed her. Now she is no longer responding to Rasulullah. Her eyes are looking up into the sky.
What should he do? He sees Barakah crying and he sees his mother dead. He understands that something has gone wrong. So the first thing he does was he jumps onto his mother. He holds onto her neck and he starts to cry
immensely on her chest.
Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلمhe wouldn't let go of her. And then Barakah, she holds Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم
And he says to her: Ya Barakah, you are my mother after my mother. You are now my mother. In other words, he is trying to call out to her saying: Ya Barakah, you are my mother. Please look after me. My mother is gone. I only have you. Please be my mother.
Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم at six years old had to encounter this. And we look at ourselves and we think we go through so much pain and struggles as if no one else is going through what we are going through.
Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلمour messenger, the most beloved to Allah, is in his first tears at the age of six years old. Six years old in our days, they're playing, they're happy, they're mucking around, they don't know what's going on. But Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم at the age of six, an orphan, had to encounter this first encounter.
How heavy would it be on a six year old to encounter this? But you know what brothers and sisters in Islam, this was the first of this extreme compassion that Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم had to learn. For wallahi after that, every time he saw an orphan or a person who had lost his mother or parents, he was the first to understand their pain. He understood their pain more than what they understood. And that was Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم
Allah was preparing him. Baraka took him and all his life Baraka was his mother. He used to say: She is my mother after my mother.
Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم became used to crying from that age. If you were ever to see Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم in front of you, he would smile. If you mentioned Allah, he would cry.
The Loss of Khadija رضي الله عنها
Then Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم grew up. And as he is growing up, the people loved him. Everyone who saw him just wanted to hug him and kiss him from a young age. Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم brought happiness to people's hearts.
And this happiness and this love from the people brought him one day to the love of his beloved wife Khadija. Khadija رضي الله عنها was 15 years older than Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم. He was only 25. She was 40. She had children before marrying him. She had married several men before him and they had died. She was a widow.
Yet her character was unbelievable.
And Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم marries her. Up to the age of 25 years old, he is patient. And he marries this woman Khadija رضي الله عنها Loves her immensely. Everybody loves him. Everybody trusts him. He has got the best reputation. Allahu Akbar.
The second encounter was the loss of his dear, dear wife Khadija RadhiyaAllahu Anha. When she died, Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم's tears would not stop. And that is an indication to us that it is okay, it is permissible
The Story of Zainab and the Necklace
Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم - ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam) tears flowed for Khadija RadhiyaAllahu Anha. Especially the fact that Jibreel Alaihi Wasallam once came down and said to him: (سَتَأْتِيكَ خَدِيجَةُ - satā'tīka Khadījah) "Khadija will come to you and she is
carrying on top of her head a bundle of sugar cane, something like a bundle of sticks and something that looks like sugar cane. And tell her that Allah gives her his salam."
(يُقْرِئُهَا السَّلَامَ - Yuqri'uhas-salam) - "And tell her that Allah has promised her and prepared for her a house, a palace made of golden sugar cane in Jannah where she will see no more hardship."
And Khadija RadhiyaAllahu Anha cried saying: I love Allah and I love his messenger.
Why would he not cry for someone like that? Until one day, after the battle of Badr, battle of Badr when the Muslims they took captives, you know the story. When the Muslims, Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم - ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam) ordered to take the captives in. And then he offered that for whoever family member, if any family has a family member who is a captive, they are allowed to ransom them. They have to pay something to ransom them and let them free.
So there was one of his daughters by the name of Zainab RadhiyaAllahu Anha. She was married to a man of the Mushrikeen by the name of Abul Aas. Now this man, he was still a Mushrik at that time. And he was still allowed, he was still permitted that Muslims, Muslim women were allowed to be married to Mushrikeen. It wasn't forbidden yet.
So Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم - ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam) is waiting and he is accepting ransoms from people to set free family members. This man Abul Aas, he was one of those captured. He was on the enemy lines fighting Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم - ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam)'s army. But he was also the son-in-law of Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم - ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam). This was before he became a Muslim.
Then Zainab RadhiyaAllahu Anha came along because she loved her husband. She came along to ransom, to pay for the release of her husband Abul Aas.
Now Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم - ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam) treated everyone the same when it came to the laws of Allah. Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم - ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam) treated everyone the same, even if it was his own daughter.
Zainab RadhiyaAllahu Anha comes along and she brings something. Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم - ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam) is yet to have a look at what this something is. Something of intense value.
And she offers it to Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم - ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam), ransoming her husband. Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم - ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam) opens it. And what does he see? He sees the necklace of Khadija RadhiyaAllahu Anha which he gave to her when he married her. And this same necklace is the gift which Khadija RadhiyaAllahu Anha gave to her daughter Zainab when she was wed to Abul Aas.
When Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم - ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam) saw her bangles, he started to shiver. And he could not hold his tears until his beard was soaked with his tears, remembering Khadija RadhiyaAllahu Anha.
And he said to his companions: This is my daughter Zainab. She has brought this gift or these bangles to ransom her husband. If you wish, you can let him free without taking the bangles. And if you wish, you can
keep him as a captive and not accepted.
And they said: Ya Rasulullah, how could we not? They released Abul Aas. And Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم - ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam) returned the bangles back to Zainab.
Such sentimental value. And this was another encounter of Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم - ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam)'s tears.
His Love for the Poor
Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم - ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam) used to constantly say: (اللَّهُمَّ احْشُرْنِي مَعَ الْفُقَرَاءِ - Allāhummaḥshurnī maʿa al-fuqarāʾ) - "Oh Allah gather me with the poor people."
This is not to say that people who are wealthy are not loved by Rasulullah. We know Abu Bakr Radiallahu Anhu, Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم - ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam) loved him second in line to Aisha in all the people that existed in his life when they were living. Abu Bakr Radiallahu Anhu was among the most wealthiest of men. But obviously he used his wealth for the sake of Allah.
But Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم - ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam) used to say: (اللَّهُمَّ احْشُرْنِي مَعَ الْفُقَرَاءِ - Allāhummaḥshurnī maʿa al-fuqarāʾ) He used to love the life of the poor people because the poor people, they were satisfied. And Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم - ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam) went through a time of poverty and he loved the attitude and characteristic of them. He wanted to be with them. Because when they missed out, he said: I am with you, I am there for you.
Every time he'd see a little gathering of poor people, he would rush to sit with them. So if you were 1400 years back and you were living in Mecca for example, or in Medina, and you wanted to look for Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم - ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam). Where is he? You know where you will find him?
Just look for a group of poor people and you will find Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم - ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam) sitting down with them, smiling and laughing and talking with them. In fact, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم - ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam) and the poor people. He emerged, he integrated with them, assimilated with them. And that's where you would find him.
(اللَّهُمَّ احْشُرْنِي مَعَ الْفُقَرَاءِ وَالْمَسَاكِينِ - Allāhummaḥshurnī maʿa al-fuqarāʾ wal-masākīn) - "That's how Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم - ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam) used to make his dua."
The Story of Julaibib (رضي الله عنه - raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu)
He is a man who was poor. Not only was he poor, he was a person who was very unattractive. In fact, the ulama or the sahabas used to describe him as hideous. Hideous. If a person looks at him, just wants to look away.
So this man, Allah created him this way. Poor, no status in society, and hideous. And even his name was ugly. We're not meant to say that sahabas are ugly, they are beautiful. But the name that he had was an unattractive name. His name was Julaibib.
This hadith is in Sahih Muslim and part of it is also in At-Tirmidhi, which is completely authentic.
Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم - ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam) saw Julaibib one day and he had grown older in age. He said to him: How are you Julaibib? That was such the case of Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم - ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam). How are you Julaibib?
And Julaibib said: Ya Rasulullah, do you think the only woman I'll get is in Jannah? In Hurul Ain? Inshallah.
Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم - ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam) understood what he's trying to say, that he's never going to be able to get married in this life. Is he just going to die and just hope to meet Hurul Ain?
Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم - ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam) said: No, you are going to get a woman from Dunya, Inshallah, and also from the Akhirah. In other words, I would have said no, Hurul Teen and then Hurul Ain, Inshallah. Hurul Teen means soil.
So Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم - ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam) said: Ya Julaibib, go to so and so a house and ask. They have a daughter.
He went and they rejected him.
So Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم - ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam) came to this man and said to him: I want to ask for your daughter's hand.
He said: What beautiful news this is that makes the eyes... Subhanallah, Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم - ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam), no, no, it's not for me.
He said: Who for then?
He said: For Julaibib.
And suddenly his smile turned into a frown. And he said: Let me ask her mother.
So he went home and said: Rasulullah has asked for our daughter.
She said: Allahu Akbar, what great honour. What brings comfort to the eyes and to the heart."
And he said: No, no, not for Rasulullah.
She said: Who for?
He said: For Julaibib.
And then the mother said: Subhanallah, we had better men than him coming and asking for our daughter and rejected him. We had greater families asking for her and we refused them. And now the lowest of the low in society and the most hideous, we have to give our daughter to him? No, no, no, no, no, please."
Their daughter was in the background inside listening. So she came out and said: What is this that I hear mum and dad? Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم - ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam) is on behalf of another man proposing that man to me and you say no to Rasulullah?
Wallahi, I will not refuse the request of Rasulullah. And Julaibib is the only man I will marry.
Allahu Akbar.
When the news came to Julaibib, he was rejoiced for, Mashallah. And Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم - ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam) got the companions to look after him and donate so that he can get married.
Time passed and there was one of the battles. Then Julaibib was among the people who went into that battle. Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم - ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam) was there. And the battle, Alhamdulillah, was victorious to the Muslims.
And then he went out as he usually does and looks among the Sahaba. There were great Sahaba's who had died and he's asking, everybody's asking: Where's my uncle, where's my brother, where's my son? Where's my so and so?
But Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم - ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam) was asking one question: (أَيْنَ جُلَيْبِيبٌ - 'Ayna Julaybīb?) - "Where is my Julaibib?"
And everybody would say: We don't know Ya Rasulullah. Nobody cares about Julaibib. Only Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم - ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam) cares about Julaibib.
Where is my Julaibib? Everyone is saying: I don't know Ya Rasulullah.
And they would say: Ya Rasulullah, have you seen my uncle?
He said: No, but have you seen my Julaibib?
They said: No, we don't know anything about him.
So he went looking for him. And amidst the dead people, he finally found Julaibib dead on the ground. And around him as a circle, there were seven of the enemies dead around him.
And Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم - ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam), when he saw this image, he stared at him and his eyes flowed with tears. He said: He killed seven of the enemies of Islam and then he was killed.
Julaibib is of me and I am of him. Julaibib is of me. And he repeated it three times. Julaibib is of me, he is one of my family. And I am one of his family.
Then Julaibib had no other bed except the bed of the palms of Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم - ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam). Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم - ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam) carried him on his own forearms. And he was crying.
Then suddenly his crying turned into a smile and he looked away. He went. Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم - ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam) and buried Julaibib with his own blessed hands.
And they asked him: Ya Rasulullah, why were you crying and then he was smiling and looked away?
He said: I was crying for the loss of my dear family member Julaibib. No one cared about him but me. And then Allah showed me his place in Jannah. I saw his soul in Jannah. And there was one of his wives from Nuhur Al Ain running towards him. So I smiled that he finally got his wife which he wanted in Jannah.
And as she was running, the heel, the heel of her legs showed. So I turned away. I have no right to look at the wife of Julaibib.
Allahu Akbar. This is how, this is how they used to compare. Not with status in society, not by their wealth or their beauty, not by gender. But Subhanallah, by their Iman, by their Iman.
The Death of His Son Ibrahim
Rasulullah ﷺ ran through the encounter of losing his child. And guess what brothers and sisters? You will not believe this. Every single daughter and son of Rasulullah ﷺ died before him, except for Fatima, six months after his death. Every single child of his, he had to witness their death. And every one of them he cried for them.
The first among them was Ibrahim, who was the son of Mariya. He was only two years old. And Rasulullah ﷺ, when he heard of his sickness, he went to him and he saw him taking his last breath.
And Rasulullah ﷺ carried him and hugged him. And then when he died, Rasulullah ﷺ came and buried him in the grave with his own blessed hands.
And then suddenly he started to cry over there. The companion saw him and he said: Are you crying? And you have told us not to cry over the dead people.
He said: No, no, no. This is not what I was talking about. This is the mercy which is coming out of me. It is okay to cry on your dead ones out of mercy, compassion and love.
And he said the following words :
"The eyes overflow with tears and the hearts are in loss for you O Ibrahim. But the tongue says nothing except what pleases Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala."
That is what really matters. When you have someone who is lost, you can cry, you can love them, you can remember them. But don't allow your tongue to say anything except what pleases Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.
The Battle of Uhud
Then Rasulullah ﷺ, he had a very painful encounter. Aisha said to him: Which was the worst time that you have ever had in your life? And she thinks that it was Uhud.
Let me tell you about Uhud. Rasulullah ﷺ's head was stricken. His teeth were broken. His cheek, it had one of the chains of his armor, his face armor immersed into it. And his helmet on his head was broken, it was inside his skull. And his chest, his ribs were broken. And the enemies had done this to him.
And Aisha thought this was the worst time that Rasulullah ﷺ had ever encountered. But guess what? Rasulullah ﷺ went into his house and Abu Ubaidah ibn al-Jarrah tending to his wounds until he took the chains or the rings out of Rasulullah ﷺ's cheek until he lost his front teeth.
He went to Fatima, his daughter, and she is tending to his wounds while Ali is bringing the water. And she had to burn certain ashes in order to stop the bleeding from the face of Rasulullah ﷺ.
And then Rasulullah ﷺ said:
"Allah is angry with the people who have hurt and brought pain to their messenger. How could a people hurt their messenger who has come to save them from hellfire? And they only throw themselves into hellfire."
Then Rasulullah ﷺ waited one hour. He slept and then he woke up. And he cried. He put his arms up to Allah and he said:
"O Allah, please forgive my people for they just do not know. O Allah, guide my people for they just do not know."
As though Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala had told the Prophet ﷺ that these people who did this to you, they will suffer in this way and they will suffer in that way, to the point where Rasulullah ﷺ's compassion kicked in.
And to the same people who hurt him, he said: O Allah, please don't hurt them. They just don't know. They just don't know, O Allah.
Allahu Akbar. If this is his case with the enemies who hurt him this way, what is our situation? We get hurt by family members. We get hurt by friends. We get hurt by society. And subhanallah, we sit there crying over ourselves, thinking that there is no one suffering like us. We are the biggest victims on the face of the earth.
Yet Rasulullah ﷺ, when was the last time someone came and struck you with a dagger? Someone came and hit you with a huge shield? With a huge axe? And brought you to the ground? Rasulullah ﷺ is on the ground. And yet he is afraid that Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala will torture them.
So this is what he is saying: O Allah, please just forgive them for they just don't know.
The Worst Day: At-Ta'if
But that wasn't the worst encounter. The worst encounter was in At-Ta'if.
When Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala had ordered him to go and call the people of At-Ta'if. So he went to At-Ta'if. And on his journey, he thought: Maybe there are people over there who will give me some support. Maybe I can talk to their leaders to talk to the leaders of Quraish to lessen the burden off my back.
Khadijah رضي الله عنها had died. His uncle Abu Talib had died, who gave him support and he had nobody in front of him. Abu Jahl had just abused him. His uncle Hamza رضي الله عنه was the only one standing there, but he didn't have much support.
So he went to At-Ta'if. And he sees three of the leaders of At-Ta'if. He thinks that maybe they will help him. So he came up to them and he said: You are the wise people of this land, At-Ta'if. Help me and support me. May I call you to Allah as well? I am the messenger of Allah.
So the first leader looks at him and he says to him: You out of all people, Wallahi, if Allah had chosen anyone else I would have accepted, but not you. Away from me.
The second person said: You better get out of here before people know.
The third person said: If you are truly the messenger of Allah, then you are too big for me to listen to you. And if you are not the messenger of Allah, then I am too big for you to stand here before me.
When Rasulullah saw this abuse, he said to them: He realized the threat. He said: Ok, please, if you don't want to accept what I have to say, at least don't tell anyone. Just leave me alone and I will leave.
But no, they did not do that. They went to all the people of At-Ta'if. And soon, sooner than he knew it, he found children, women and men, the whole of At-Ta'if had come out. And what did they have? The children had rocks in their hands. The women had other material in their hands. And they started to throw it towards Rasulullah.
And his at that time sponsored or adopted son, Zayd, he is trying to protect Rasulullah. He had the children and women standing on the right and the children and women standing on the left and the men outside leaning on trees laughing.
Rasulullah, has this ever happened to you? No. Rasulullah, did he cry? No. And he is trying to get out. But the children and women, they are throwing stones at him. And they are saying abusive words.
And Rasulullah who went to the right, they will stop him. Rasulullah who loved children, compassionate to the orphans, now they are throwing stones at him. Allahu Akbar. He found himself unable to go anywhere.
His feet were bleeding. Zayd was bleeding. And he entered into a grape vine garden. He sat beneath a grape tree. And there Rasulullah put his head down and he began to cry.
What is Rasulullah crying about? Is he crying from the pain? No. Is he crying that they abused him? No. Is he crying that he felt that he was a victim? No. No, no, no. Rasulullah never cried for that. He knew that this was a test from Allah.
What was he crying about then? He was crying because he thought that maybe Allah was angry with him. That's all that mattered to him.
So he put his arms up and he made the famous dua. He said:
"Oh Allah, oh Allah, oh Allah, I turn to you for comfort. I turn to you for support. I have no one else but you. Oh Allah, who do you leave me to? To strangers who are abusing me? To strangers in a strange land that are mocking me? That will hurt me?"
He is not complaining. You know what he is doing? He is asking Allah to bring guidance to him. Because then he said:
"Oh Allah, oh Allah, if you are not angry with me, then all of this doesn't matter to me. None of it affects me. So long as you are pleased with me. Oh Allah, that's all he really wanted to know."
"I complain to you, Allah, not because of the pain, but because your maghfira, your rahma, your closeness is far more beloved to my heart than anything. If you are not angry with me, then all of this doesn't matter to me. I don't care."
And so Allah showed him the first sign. He brought to him Adas, who was a Christian. And we know the story. Rasulullah ﷺ said : (بِسْمِ اللَّهِ - bismillah) And Adas said: The people of this land don't know this word. Where did you learn it from?
He said: My lord taught me this word.
Adas said: Amazing. What kind of a man are you?
Rasulullah ﷺ asked him: Where are you from?
He said: I am from Nineveh in Iraq.
He said: Subhanallah, the place where my brother Yunus ibn Mattah is from.
Adas said: How do you know this information?
He said: Allah had taught me.
At that point Adas, who was knowledgeable in the scriptures, he fell down to the feet of Rasulullah ﷺ and he began to kiss them and wipe them onto his face saying: You are a messenger of Allah.
And he started to cry. And then the master, he was a slave, the master took him and he dragged him away from him.
And his friend said to him: This man Muhammad has done magic on your own slave, take him away.
And they said to him: Ya Adas, why are you believing in him?
He said: No man knows this information except a messenger of Allah.
And meaning that he knew the scriptures before. And this was like a prophecy. And they said: Your religion is better than his.
He said: No wallah, he is the messenger of Allah.
This was the first sign from Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. What is he crying for? He is crying for Allah's mercy. He is crying thinking that Allah had left him.
But he didn't. And sometimes this happens to you, brothers and sisters. When you are in pain or agony and you feel that people have oppressed you, turn to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.
Allah says:
"Do not ever assume or suspect that Allah is unaware of what the oppressors are doing. They will be standing on the day with their heads humiliated down in embarrassment and shame. And they will not dare to look up because before them is hellfire. And their hearts seem like they are outside of their bodies out of fear."
So Rasulullah ﷺ was one of those. He was oppressed by these people. But he turned to Allah and Allah gave him victory.
Then he went and you know the story. When he reached a certain part before MeccaJibreel عليه السلام came down saying to him: Allah has heard your dua. And with me is the angel of the mountain. He is asking you permission so he can crush them between the mountains.
Give him permission, he is asking you. What did Rasulullah ﷺ say? What did he say brothers and sisters?
He said:
"No! Do not crush them, do not hurt them, for I hope that from their loins there will come an offspring, a generation that will worship none other but Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and never make partners with him."
"Oh Allah, guide my people for they just don't know."
His Night Prayers and Tears for the Ummah
One night Aisha رضي الله عنها moved her arm around and her hand touched the feet, the bottom feet, the feet of Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم, the soles of his foot.
Now if you're moving around and you touch the soles of a foot, where would the foot be? I mean, if it's on the ground, you can't touch the sole. So Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم had his feet up and he was in sujood.
They didn't have, Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم didn't have a big room, eight meters by ten meters with an ensuite and so on and so forth. Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم had a very small room.
So much so that when Umar رضي الله عنه entered once, he was smiling and then suddenly he started to cry. And Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: What's making you cry?
And he said: Ya Rasulullah, I looked around your house and I found a small window. There was a little lantern and there was no fuel in it even. I looked at the wall and you had some barley that was still in a very rough course, not looked after. I looked at your bed and all I see is a little one layer mattress, one layer of straw. I could see Ya Rasulullah the marks on the side of your body. And I looked at your pillow and your pillow was filled with coarse material. Wallahi I can see scratches on your beloved face from it.
The emperors of Kisra and Kayser are eating the most exquisite meals, reclining on the most silkiest of beds and wearing the most silkiest of clothes. (وَأَنْتَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فِي هَذَا - And you Ya Rasulullah, you are like this, the best of creation.)
Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam stood up and came close to Umar Radiallahu Anhu and wiped his tears. That's what he used to do, he used to touch the face and wipe the tears of people. And he said: Ya Umar, doesn't it please you enough that they will have this world and that's it, and we will have the hereafter?
And he said: Ya Rasulullah.
So Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam was sitting in the room and Aisha Radiallahu Anhu fills the soles of his feet. And she realizes that he's been praying all night. She looks at him and his beard is soaked with tears. His chest is soaked with tears. And there is a puddle underneath him, like a puddle.
What kind of a cry is that?
He said to him: Ya Rasulullah, give your body some rest. Allah has already given you, granted you this gift of automatically forgiving everything.
Even Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam never did a sin. You know what he said to her? He said: (أَفَلَا أَكُونُ عَبْدًا شُكُورًا - Should I not be a grateful servant? I am crying, I am crying because I am grateful to Allah.)
And you know what dua he was making? Do you know what dua he was making in that time?
Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam was asking Allah to forgive the believers and to look after them.
Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam, he used to cry for his ummah more than what he ever cried for anything else.
One day Aisha Radiallahu Anhu said to him: Ya Rasulullah, can you make dua for me? Now you're thinking Aisha, she's the most beloved to Rasulullah. And she's thinking Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam is going to make me the best dua in the world.
So he said: (اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِعَائِشَةَ مَا أَسَرَّتْ وَمَا أَعْلَنَتْ وَمَا قَدَّمَتْ وَمَا أَخَّرَتْ - Allah forgive Aisha in her secret and in her open. Forgive Aisha for whatever she has done in the past and any sin that she will ever do in the future.)
Then Aisha Radiallahu Anhu was so happy that she started to giggle and laugh so much to the point where she couldn't even hold her head up straight.
Then the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said: Are you not happy with what I said?
And then she said: And how could I not be happy with your dua Ya Rasulullah? It's the best and I feel so privileged that you made this special dua for me.
You know what Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said to her? He said: (يَا عَائِشَةُ وَاللَّهِ إِنَّهَا لَدُعَائِي لِأُمَّتِي فِي كُلِّ صَلَاةٍ - Ya Aisha, I swear by almighty Allah, that this is the dua I make for my ummah in every single Salat I pray.)
Wallahi Ya Aisha, this is the dua which I make for my ummah in every single Salat I make for my ummah.
On the Day of Resurrection
Then one day they saw the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam crying. And he lifted his arms up when he reached the verses about Ibrahim Alaihi Wasallam saying, and Nuh and the other Prophets saying: These people, oh my lord, are in your care. If you want to forgive them, you forgive them. If you want to torture them, then you can torture them. Every matter is to you Ya Allah.
Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam thought about his ummah. He thought about our sins. He thought about our shortcomings. And you know what he did? He started to cry immensely.
They never saw Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam cry this much in their life. Aisha Radiallahu Anhu says: I never saw him cry this much. The Sahaba said: We never saw a puddle of tears underneath Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam as this much.
What was Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam saying when he heard these verses? He was saying:
"Oh Allah, ummati ummati, ummati ummati." (Sahih Muslim)
And this was before he died Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam by about 4 months, 3 months before he died. He went to the grave of the Shuhada and the grave of the Baqi. And then he made a long dua for the Muslims. And he said to them: You are in Jannah Inshallah.
And then he stopped and said: (وَدِدْتُ أَلَّوْ رَأَيْنَا إِخْوَانَنَا - "The only thing I'm going to miss so badly is meeting my brothers and my sisters.")
Abu Huraira looked at him and he said: Ya Rasulullah, are you ok? We're here. We are your brothers, your sisters. Why are you saying this?
He said: No Ya Abu Huraira, you are not my brothers and sisters. You are my companions. My brothers and sisters, they are not born yet. My brothers and sisters, they are not born yet. They are the people who believed in me but never met me. They are the people who believed in me but never met me.
He is talking about us. His heart, his heart is attached to us. A thousand years later.
He said: Ya Abu Huraira, I will be awaiting for them at the fountain of Kawthar on the day of judgment. And I will call them one by one. I will look at them and I will recognize their faces. And I will say: You, you, you, you, come, drink.
While the angels are standing at the borders and they are preventing the hypocrites and every other disbeliever.
They said: Ya Rasulullah, how will you know them when you've never seen them?
And Rasulullah said: Ya Abu Huraira, let me give you an example of a farmer who has many horses. He has among these horses dark black horses with no other color on them. And among them there are horses with stripes on their faces, their necks and their legs. Isn't he able to easily tell apart these horses from them?
He said: Very easily Ya Rasulullah.
He said: That's how my ummah will come to me on the day of judgment. They will have Noor coming out of their faces, their arms and their legs.
They said: Ya Rasulullah, where is this Noor from?
And he replied by saying: This is because of the Wudu which they used to make in the former life and their prayers.
صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْكَ يَا حَبِيبِي يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ
Your only concern is your ummah Ya Rasulullah. Your only concern is us Ya Rasulullah. This is the only thing that you are crying about Ya Rasulullah. Wallahi we need it. Wallahi we need it. Wallahi we die for it. Wallahi this is everything that we need Ya Habibi Ya Rasulullah.
Truly we love him more than our own parents. Because on the day of judgment your parents will bear innocence from you. You will bear innocence from your parents. Your parents will come to you crying and saying: Son, daughter, was I not a good mother and father? Please give me one Hasanah, one Hasanah to save me this day.
And you will say to them: Father and mother, Wallahi you are the best parents, but I cannot even risk one Hasanah.
Then we will go to the prophets one after another. Adam will refuse us. Nooh Alaihissalam will refuse us. Ibrahim Alaihissalam will refuse us. Musa Alaihissalam, Isa Alaihissalam will say: I am afraid of the same thing that you are afraid of. Go away from me, go away from me.
And finally we reach Muhammad Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam. And Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam will put his head on the ground. And then he will lift it up and say standing on the Sirat above hell fire. And he will say:
"Oh Allah, save my ummah."
Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala had said to him: Ya Muhammad, lift your head up and intercede. I will give you intercession. And ask for anything I will give you.
And what do you think he will ask? Not like all the other prophets. Not like all the parents. Not like anyone else. He will dare to stand up and say: Oh Allah, my ummah, my ummah. Not myself. My ummah.
You know why? Because Allah had granted him this gift. Do you know why Allah granted him this gift? Because Rasulullah, and this hadith is in Sahih Bukhari and Muslim, he said: Every prophet hastened his request from Allah. Every prophet, they asked Allah for something and they hastened their dua except me. I waited.
And they said: Ya Rasulullah, what did you ask for?
He said: (اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْنِي شَفِيعَ أُمَّتِي يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ - "Oh Allah, make me the intercessor of my ummah on the day of judgement.")
Closing
And his last bequests were that we keep united, were that we don't have nationalism, racism towards each other, we do not fight one another, we do not abuse our wives and women, we do not become sexist whereby we oppress the people based on their gender.
He told us: Stay away from oppression, do not go back to racism for I have placed it beneath my feet. And he said: (اللَّهُمَّ هَلْ بَلَّغْتُ - "Oh Allah, bear witness that I have informed.")
Rasulullahi sallallahu alayhi wasallam's tears have not ended my dear brothers and sisters. He is waiting for us.
You know I end it with this beautiful statement. If there is anything that you ever want, let's say there's something that you want from Allah, then I'm going to give you a very simple way of getting that request delivered from Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala without even asking for your need.
This hadith is sahih. Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam said: Whoever makes dua for me, then Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala will relieve that person from every hardship that they ever complain about and he will give them everything that makes them happy and satisfied.
So say اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى نَبِيِّنَا مُحَمَّدٍ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ night and day and our appointment inshallah is at the fountain of Kawthar.
May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala grant us understanding. May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala grant us His forgiveness. May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala have mercy upon us.
I ask Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala to keep us united in Iman. May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala unite us with the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam to drink a beautiful drink from his blessed hands from which he will never be thirsty ever again. Oh Allah grant us Jannah and save us from the fire.
End of Lecture
May Allah make us among those who truly love and follow the Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم. Ameen.
